Mary Lyon died at Belchertown, Hampshire County, Massachusetts. She was born c 1747. She was the daughter of Peter Lyon and Mary (?). Marriage banns for her and Zephaniah Wood were published on 20 Mar 1768.1 Mary Lyon married Zephaniah Wood, son of David Wood and Silence Clapp, on 25 Aug 1768 at Sharon, Massachusetts.2,3
"The supposition that Mary who m. Zephaniah Wood was a dau. of Peter Lyon is based only upon indications of place and time, and the possibility that Peter had a daughter to whom he gave her mother's name." This is certainly not strong support for the connection.4

Peter Lyon was born on 19 Dec 1686 at Dorchester, Massachusetts.1 He was the son of Peter Lyon Jr. and Jane Vose.1,2 Peter Lyon married (1) Waightstill Wyatt, daughter of Nathaniel Wyatt and Mary (?), on 13 Feb 1710 at Dorchester, Massachusetts.3,4 Peter Lyon married (2) Jemima Fales on 23 Sep 1731.2,5 Peter Lyon died on 8 Apr 1752 at Walpole, Massachusetts, at age 65.2,6
"Peter lived for the greater part of his life in Dorchester. He was a man of family, if not of means. Family tradition gives him twenty-one children; ten are recorded in Walpole, two in Stoughton, and two in Dorchester; five more are known to belong to Peter and Waitstill, though their births are not recorded, leaving two of whom there is no account.
"It is said that the early Cantonians had the peculiar custom of requiring their boys to undergo the exhilarating exercise of "bumping" -- swinging them by hands and feet against the boundary marks -- by way of teaching them to respect the land marks which their fathers had set. In spite of this forceful admonition, however, Peter early in his life left his father's home in Canton, returning to Dorchester, where he was married and where he practiced his trade of housewright. Possibly some bumps received there jarred his memory to a recollection of his boyhood warnings; for he must have returned to Stoughton about 1716-7, as he had children there 1n 1717 and 1729. His wife died almost immediately after the birth of this last child, and for the rest of his life he seems, by the records, to have been in Walpole.
"So far as we can learn, his life was uneventful, though he was Precinct Clerk and Assessor in Stoughton, 1717-1719. Evidently the cares of a large family caused him to give his whole thought to attending to their well-being and providing for their support. He did what he could to prevent race suicide, and doubtless thought, with this, his duty done."7
These notes in the Lyon Memorial from the Suffolk Parish Records support some of the connections to heirs in this family:
"On April 26, 1753, Eliab Lyon, a minor, age 17, son of Peter Lyon, late of Walpole, chooses his mother Sarah as guardian; also Isaiah, aged 16, and Jemima and Sarah, above 14. Benjamin, aged 20, refusing to choose, his [step] mother, widow Sarah, is appointed the next day; also for Drusilla aged 12, Tamar 10, Adah 8, Zillah 6 and Asaph 3. The account of Sarah was rendered: Personal assets £42 - 4 s. - 3d; expenses £39 - 12s. - 3 1/4 d.
"Sept. 1, 1753, Henry Crane and wife Abigail, of Stoughton, give quitclaim to Lemuel Lyon of Walpole, all right in estate that belonged to 'my honored father, Peter Lyon, late of Walpole, deceased.' Sept. 15, 1753, Benjamin Lyon, of Dorchester, for £25 old Tenor, quit-claims to his brother, Lemuel, of Walpole all his interests to the estate of Peter Lyon, late of Walpole. May 24, 1756, Thomas Foster, of Dorchester, cordwainer, and Mary, his wife, for £4 -- 16s. quit-claim to their brother Lemuel Lyon all his interest, etc. April 27, 1756, Sarah Lyon, widow of Peter Lyon, etc. and guardian of Eliab, Isaiah, Sarah, Jemima, Drusilla, Tamar, Ada, Zillah, and Asaph, for £45 --12s.--18d. quit-claims to Lemuel Lyon all rights of herself and minor children, etc.
"'Know all men by these Presents that I, Waitstill Evens, of Dorchester, and Thomas Foster and Mary his wife, both of Dorchester, and Robert Capen and Jane his wife, of Stoughton, and Beulah Hadley, of Dedham, and Pelatiah Herring and Hepzibah his wife, both of Dedham, and all the above-named in ye county of Suffolk and Province of Massachusetts Bay in New England, and John Dickerman and Mariah his wife, both of Conticut, have received of our brother Lemuel Lyon, of Walpole, in ye county & province aforesaid husbandman, each of us the just sum of £4 - 10s. - 8d. lawful money in full to our full content and satisfaction for our Portions which was left to us by our Hond. "Dec. 9, 1757, Joseph Clap, of Walpole, was appointed guardian to Asaph, a minor under 14, son of Peter Lyon, of Walpole, deceased."9

The Morse Memorial, seemingly in error, lists Peter, Lemuel, and Benjamin Lyon as children of Peter and Abigail (Fales) Lyon. Only for Benjamin do the dates bear out this assignment to Peter's second wife whose name was Jemima Fales.10

Peter Lyon

Relationship8th great-grandfather of Daniel Wayne Olds

Peter Lyon married Ann (?).1 Peter Lyon was born c 1625 at England.1 He died c 1694 at Dorchester, Massachusetts.2
"Of his antecedents and of his age nothing is known with certainty. As to his English home, all data point to London of either Essex or Middlesex stock. That he was made freeman in 1649, and that his first recorded child was born in 1650 indicate that he was born between 1620 and 1630. It is possible, indeed, that he was twice married, and that Susanna, member of the First Church in 1639, was his first wife. This supposition might account for some of Lyon name who appear at an early date, but who have no apparent connection with those whose position in the colony is definitely known. Unless we assume, however, that while Susanna was a member, Peter did not qualify for citizenship for some years after his first marriage, this supposition must be rejected."1

Inventory presented by Daniel Morey; amount, £35 8s. 6d. There is, however, no record of his death, and the place of burial no man knoweth to this day."3

Peter Lyon Jr. was baptized on 6 Sep 1663.1 He was the son of Peter Lyon and Ann (?).1 Peter Lyon Jr. married (1) Jane Vose, daughter of Thomas Vose and Waightstill Wyatt, c 1686.1 Peter Lyon Jr. died on 7 Jul 1733 at Stoughton, Massachusetts, at age 69.2
"He was admitted to the Dorchester church 1689, and his wife Jane in 1690. He was made freeman 1690 and seems to have lived in Mattapan, between Dorchester and Milton, in the neighborhood of Brush Hill, and near Punkapoag. Peter and Jane styled themselves of Punkapoag in 1705; they were dismissed to the Milton church in 1695, and in 1718 to Canton, where he had bought 20 acres of land." The Lyon Memorial uses church records to show that Sergeant Thomas Vose, Jane's father, opposed the marriage to Peter. However, the young couple could not be disuaded and they were married about 1685/6. Peter later lived in Canton, where he kept a tavern from 1705 to 1712.3
Hutchins mentions a Suffolk County deed "dated 29 May 1716, in which Peter Lyon and his wife Jane Lyon, Susanna Mory, widow of David Mory, Joseph Hewins and Mehitable his wife all of Dorchester, and Ebenezer Barras [sic] of Attleborough and his wife Elizabeth, sold for £12 to Jonathan Billing of Dorchester, glazier, the rights to the 47th lot in the 12th Division in Dorchester it being one half of the whole lot or 29 acres in all. Although no specific relationships are given, three of the grantors were children of Peter Lyon1 and the inference is that Elizabeth was the sole heir of Ebenezer2 Lyon who had already died."4
The Lyon Memorial contains the full transcription of Peter's will. Peter Lyon, yeoman, of Stoughton, made his will on 8 May 1731. He gave his wife "Sarah Lion the whole Income and Improvement of all my Estate" for as long as she remained his widow. If she remarried she was to retain "what Estate she brought to me when I married her and no more". After Sarah's death or remarriage, "my son Peter" was to receive "all my Estate, both Real and Personal, Provided my son Peter Pay the Legacies hereafter Given". These were one shilling each to son Elhanan and daughter Jane Pitcher, "as a token of my Love", they having already had what "I thought reasonable" for their portions. On 25 April 1733 he added new provisions in a codocil: "Since it hath pleased God to Lengthen my frail Life to this Date, and in consideration of the tender Care of my Loving Wife Sarah Lyon in my afflicted circumstances" he gave Sarah "all that she brought with her to me and my Horse and Cow to be at her Dispose, anything contained in my foregoing Will to the contrary notwithstanding."5 "Inventory by Benj. Blackman, Jos. Topliff and John Shepard was presented by Sarah and Peter, executors, Aug. 23, 1737. Amt. £186 - 1s. - 6d."6

He says the evidence for Eleanor is strong but circumstantial. She is not named in either her mother's or her father's will. but William Maccubbin, in two deeds, mentioned his dear and well beloved sister Elinor Rumney. Eleanor witnessed a deed for Sarah and for Samuel, William and Zachariah.

John MacCubbin was born s 1630. Loeser finds nothing to prove the connection of this John Maccubbin to a John Maccubbin of Knockdolian, Scotland, as has often been suggested.1 He married Elinor (?). The claim that John Maccubbin married Susan, daughter of Samuel Howard, as made by Warfield2, cannot be supported. In fact, there is no evidence that he married any Howard woman or, in fact, had a wife other than Eleanor. The will of Samuel Howard, made 28 Feb. 1702/3 and probated 9 Nov. 1703, does mention grandchildren John, Samuel and Elizabeth Maccubbins but Elizabeth was still single and John and Samuel were not yet 18, much younger than the like-named sons of John Maccubbin, Sr. They were, in fact, sons of John Maccubbin, Jr.3 Confusion may also have resulted from the fact that Eleanor, widow of John Maccubbin, married John Howard, Sr., a brother of this Samuel Howard.

JOHN MACCUBBIN, IMMIGRANT.
Maccubbin--Howard--(Elinor--).
I. Jn. Maccubbin, the writer's Scotch ancestor, prob. came to Md. in 1659 (or 1659-60), the yr. in wh. he took up "Timber Rock" in A. A. Co. His marriage, not until 6 yrs later (1665), indicates that he was then a young man, b. prob. c1640.
His will, dated 9.21.1685, proved 7.31.1686 (doubtless the year he died), names his wf. Ellenor, exec; four sons (Sam, Wm., Zachariah and Moses, who were under 18 yrs. of age, that is, b. after July 1667), to each of whom he left 50a. of "Wordrape" on the north side of South R; and his son John (clearly his eldest son, b. before July, 1667), to whom he bequeathed, without age restriction, 140 acres, "Brampton," on the n. side of South R. (Annap. 4.207, as given in Md. Cal., v. 2). No das. are given in the will, although he had at least 2 das. then living, viz., Eliz. (See Sec. 1, Sam Howard's will, 1702-1703), and Sarah (Sec. 1, will of Jn. Hwd., Sr., 1695-96, and will of Elinor Hwd., 1705-11, below).

"Old Kent," 50 yrs. ago, wrote (p. 150) of Nicholas Maccubbin (gd. son of Jn.1) that he was "a Scotchman (called Maccubbin in the Lowlands, but whose name in his native Highlands was MacAlpine), who claimed descent from Kenneth II, surnamed MacAlpine, who died in 858, and who, having united the Scots and Picts under one sceptre, was the first King of all Scotland." This claim of descent from the royal line of Scotland's Kings, who reigned for 25 generations, seems to have been accepted as authentic by Md. genealogists (See "Founders," 177; Miss Lantz, B. Sun, 6.10.1906; "Marylanders of Royal Blood," B. Sun, 9.23.1906; Col. Fams. IV, Maccubbin). Mr. R. R. Griffith, whose genealogy is composed entirely of descs. of Jn. Maccubbin1 through his da. Sarah, contented himself with saying that his Maccubbin forbear was "a scion of an ancient Scottish family."

It is rather strange that the published "genealogies" are exceptionally erroneous concerning Jn. Maccubbin's marriage and children. Thus, "Founder's," p. 177: "Jn. Mccbn. m.1 Susan Howard of Sam, and m. Elinor, who was, as I believe, of the fam. of Dr. Chs. Carroll and Jas. Cll. of A. H. Par., both of whom were wss. to her will in 1711" (1705). Miss Lantz, B. Sun, 6.10.1906: "Jn. Mccbn., Colonist, m.1 Sarah Hwd. of Sam and had Jn., Zach., Wm., Sam and Moses; m.2 Eleanor, believed to be Carroll. and had Sarah., thought by descs. of Jn. to have been the only child by his 2d wife, as the other chn. are named in the will of their gd. fa. Saml. Howard" (only 3 Macubbin chn. are named in this will). Comes now Col. Fams. IV with the same or similar errors: "Jn. Mccbn. m.?? Susan Hwd., da. of Saml. Hwd. and Cath. Warner, and had Jn., Sam., Wm., Zach., Moses and Eliz; m.2 Elinor Carroll (conjecture now given as fact), and had Sarah, only child by 2d wf." "Abridged compend of American Genealogy" [published 1925] has the faults of the above, or worse (See pp. 50, 192, 381). The facts, with proofs, are as follows:

(1st). Jn. Maccubbin m.1 a da. of Saml. Hwd., by whom he had 3 chn. only, Jn., Saml., and Eliz. (will of Saml. Hwd. Sec. 1). (2d). The above sons, Jn. Jr. and Saml., are named in their father's will above: Jn. as the chief beneficiary, over 18 when the will was made, 9.21.1685; and Saml., as under 18. This proves that Jn. was b. prior to Sep. 21, 1667 (c1666), that Saml., the 2d son, was b. after Sep. 21, 1667 (c1668), and that Eliz., as the 3d and last child by 1st wf., was b. about 1669 or 1670 (confirmed by date of birth of Sarah, the next child, below). (3d). These facts established, others follow, viz.: That Jn. McC. m. his 1st wife in 1665 (possibly earlier, but not later); That she, if not over 15 or 16 at marriage, was b. not later than 1650 (c1649), and that her mother (wife of Saml. Hwd.) must have been at least 16 yrs. older, that is, b. c1633 (See Sec. 1, Saml. Hwd.)

Note--There is no reason to believe that Jn. McCubbin's 1st wf. did not d. before her husband remarried. Hence, unless Sam. Hwd. had 2 das. of the name Susan, Jn. McC.1 did not m. Susan Howard, as Susan was living in 1702, and is named in her father, Saml. Howard's, will of that date. Nor was Jn. McC.'s 1st wf. Sarah Howard of Saml., if "Founders," p. 70. is correct in stating that Sarah m. Peter Porter. It is probable that a. da. of Saml. Howard, whose name is unknown, older than Sarah and Susan, was Jn. Maccubbin's 1st wf. She d. soon after the birth of her only da., Eliz., who, in such case, may well have been given the mother's name.

Jn. Maccubbin m.2 Elinor(???), who survived him and m., as her 2d husband, Jn. Howard, Sr. (See wills of her husbands). Sarah Mcbn. was the da. of Jn. and Elinor, and m.1 Wm. Griffith, immigrant, and m.2 Th. Reynolds (See will of Jn. Hwd., Sr., 1695, in Sec. 1; will of Wm. Gth., 1699, Annap., Book H. fol. 302; will of Elinor Hwd., 1705, below). Sarah's 2d m.--to Th. Reynolds--occurred 11.30.1699 (St. Anne .372). Her 1st m.--to Wm. Gth.--was in 1687, not later than Jan. 1687-8, as her eldest child, Orlando Gth., was b. 10.21.1688 (See Gth. Gen., p. 2). Thus, only 17 yrs. intervened between the birth of Eliz. (c1670), Jn. Mcbn.'s da. by his 1st wf., and the marriage of Sarah (1687), his da. by his 2d wf. This means that Jn. Mcbn.'s Howard wife d. c1670 (the year her last ch. was born), that he m. his 2d wf. Elinor c1670-71 (prob. 1671), and had Sarah, b. 1671 or 1672, and only 15 or 16 yrs. old when she m. Wm, Griffith in 1687. Sarah was thus, unmistakably, the eldest ch. of Jn. Mcbu. and his 2d wf. Elinor, and his other chn., Wm., Zach. and Moses were b. after Sarah, chn. of Elinor, not of the Howard wife."5
John MacCubbin is on the ancestor roster for the Colonial Dames XVIIth Century. According to the listing, John MacCubbin migrated to America in 1659. John MacCubbin was born ca. 1630 and married Elinor who was deceased by 1685. He was a landowner in Maryland about 1660.6
John Maccubbin appears to have already held some land when he obtained his oldest known land patent, in 1665, for Timber Neck.4 In 1665, he patented 40 acres called Timber Neck. On 13 Nov. 1666, he bought Brampton, 100 acres, from Richard and Rachel Beard. On 14 March 1675 he bought Wardrope, 200 acres, from Mary Gardner.4 He left a will on 21 Sep 1685 at Anne Arundel County, Maryland. It was probated on July 31, 1686. His widow, Eleanor, was named the executrix and willed her dower rights. His sons Samuel, William, Zacharias and Moses got the 200 acres of Wordrape on the north side of the South River, equally. These sons were not yet 18. Son John got the 140 acres of Bramton, also on the north side of the South River.7,8

The long quote from Welsh serves to show the major players who have previously discussed the possible Howard wife of John Maccubbin, but the conclusion that Maccubbin had a first wife with maiden name Howard is based on the will of Samuel Howard whose Maccubbin grandchildren were children of John Maccubbin, Jr., as shown by Loeser.

It specifies mainly those matters which the laws, left to themselves, would have arranged differently. I presume that Sarah and Eleanor are not mentioned because they got no land. John, Jr., apparently was over 21 years old. Maccubbin evidently thought of Timber Neck and Brampton as a single plantation, though officially they remained separate tracts. John Maccubbin's estate was appraised on 2 Aug. 1686 and valued at £ 117/19/10 (or £ 172/14/10) plus 4116 lb. tobacco." (The inventory was copied into the book twice, Inv.& Acc. (9:154 & 179).
