Samuel Walter Bunn was born on 25 Apr 1899 at Bonpas Township, Richland County, Illinois.1 He was the son of William Benton Bunn Sr. and Fannie Bowers.1 Samuel Walter Bunn married Ella Hunter Van Matre on 27 Aug 1923 at Olney, Richland County, Illinois.2 Samuel Walter Bunn died on 8 Dec 1994 at Mt. Dora, Lake County, Florida, at age 95.3 He was buried at Crest Haven Cemetery, Claremont Township, Richland County, Illinois. A funeral service was held at Beyers Funeral Home in Leesburg, Florida with burial in Cresthaven Cemetery, Olney [sic], Illinois.3
He and Daniel Wallace Bunn were twins.4 Samuel Walter Bunn registered with the World War I Selective Service System on 12 Sep 1918 at Olney, Richland County, Illinois. He described himself as living on R. R. 4, Olney, Illinois, age 17, born 25 Apr 1899, and his occupation was farming for Fanny Bunn, mother. He was medium in height, medium in build, with brown eyes and had black hair. His closest relative was Fanny Bunn, mother.5
"Sam W. Bunn and Ella H. Van Matre, both of Olney, were quietly married Monday evening, August 27, by Elder Guy J. Wright, pastor of the Christian church, at the Wharf home.
"The bride is a daughter of W. W. Van Matre, of near Calhoun.
"The groom is a son of Mrs. W. W. Bunn, of Claremont.
"They will make their home at Mr. Bunn's farm and are ready to receive their many friends."
Also, in the same paper, under Marriages Licenses, is the following:
"Samuel W. Bunn, 24, and Ella H. VanMatre, 21, both of Olney."6
Sam, the youngest boy of the family, was living with his mother and farming before he was married. When he married, he brought his wife Ella to his mother's home, and the three of them lived together on the farm for some years. When Sam moved to Olney, his mother went too. Then when Sam built a new home just east of Olney, there was a room included especially for her. Sam was not only a farmer but was also an auctioneer. He knows and likes people, which is especially helpful to one who sells. He became quite a successful real estate broker. He was not the only one to benefit from his success, for he and Ella found occasions to give others a "hand up" -- which is better than a "hand out". He is now [1979] retired and lives near Leesburg, Florida, where he has a home on a canal with easy access to a large lake. He makes frequent trips to Illinois and spends quite a bit of time there in summers.7

"Bunn was born April 15, 1899 in Richland County, the son of William Benton and Fannie (Bowers) Bunn. He married Ella H. VanMatre Aug. 27, 1923. She died July 21, 1975.
"He was a retired auctioneer. He was a member of the Beverly Shores Church of Christ.
"He is survived by four nephewSamuel Walter Bunn and three nieces.
"Bunn was preceded in death by his parents, wife, three brothers and a sister."8

Henry Harrison Burgess was born on 28 May 1848 at South Carolina.3,4 He was the son of Thomas Burgess and Mary Jane Bevis.2 Henry Harrison Burgess married Lucinda Jane Becknell, daughter of James Hailey Becknell and Sarah Ann P. DeFreese, on 4 Feb 1875.5,6 Henry Harrison Burgess died on 17 Jul 1918 at Pacolet, Spartanburg County, South Carolina, at age 70.3,7 He was buried at Pacolet Methodist Cemetery, Pacolet, Spartanburg County, South Carolina.8
The following information was posted on Rootsweb by Aimee Burgess, presenting the case for Henry Harrison Burgess having had an earlier wife who would have been the mother of his older children:
Henry Harrison Burgess appeared on the census of 15 Jun 1880 at Pinckney Township, Union County, South Carolina, as follows:
306/306 Burgess, Harrison H., 32, divorced, farmer, b. S. C., parents b. S. C.
, Mary Jane, 13, dau., works in field, b. S.C., parents b. S. C.
, Caroline, 11, dau., works in field, b. S. C., parents b. S. C.
, Thomas, 9, son, works in field, b. S. C., parents b. S. C.10
In the 1880 census, both parties to this marriage are reported as divorced. Divorce was briefly legal in South Carolina only from 1872 -- 1878 and the record should be in the Court of Common Pleas.
Henry Harrison Burgess and Lucinda Jane Becknell appeared on the census of 6 Jun 1900 at Spartanburg Township, Spartanburg County, South Carolina, as follows:
134/148 Burges, Henry H., head, b. May 48, 52, marr. 34 yrs, b. S.C., parents b. S.C., farmer
, Jane L., wife, b. Apr 36, 64, marr. 34 yrs, 5 children, 4 living, b. GA, parents b. S. C.
, Mary Jane, mother, b. Sept 31, 68, widow, b. S. C., parents b. S. C.4
His obituary states:
"FUNERAL OF H. H. BURGES HELD YESTERDAY
- - - - - - - - - - - - -
"H. H. Burges, of the Pacolet section, died at the home of his son, T. M. Burges Wednesday afternoon at 5:30 o'clock at the age of 70 years. Mr. Burges had been in ill health a few months prior to his death.
"The funeral services were held this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock and interment followed in the Pacolet cemetery."11
The following information was posted on Rootsweb by Aimee Burgess, presenting the case for Henry Harrison Burgess having had an earlier wife who would have been the mother of his older children:
"Information on Henry Harrison's children from Catherine Fair.
"In her notes she mentions a conflict among family members regarding the exact date of the marriage between Henry Harrison Burgess and Lucille Jane Becknell. A family Bible has the date as 1875. I believe this is correct. Lucinda Jane Becknell was first married to Jesse Perry. She is in the 1860 census of Pickens Co SC with him. In 1870, she is apparently a widow, still in Pickens Co SC with her children by Jesse Perry. In 1880, Lucinda Jane is in Union Co SC, recorded as divorced, with 2 of her children by Jesse Perry and 1 child by Henry Harrison Burgess.
"Henry Harrison Burgess is unaccounted for in the 1870 census. His 3 eldest children were all born before 1870 and should have been in that census.
"On the death certificate of William Thomas Burgess, his son, Luther Victor Burgess, knew the name of William's father but not the name of his mother. According to Catherine Fair's records, Lucinda Jane Becknell died in 1918. Luther Victor Burgess would have been about 17 years old. He should have known her.
"Taken together, I believe that this indicates that Henry Harrison Burgess had a wife prior to Lucinda Jane Becknell and that she was the mother of the eldest children."9
