John Cowles was born c 1598.1 He married Hannah (?).1 John Cowles died in Sep 1675 at Hatfield, Massachusetts.1
Frank T. Coles says "There was in Hartford and then in Farmington, Connecticut, in the early days of the colony, one John Cole, a farmer, by some thought to have been a brother of James, the cooper. To distinguish himself and his family from the family of James, he varied the spelling of his name. In the Farmington records the name is spelled Coles, Colles, and finally in 1682, Cowles. It is also found spelled Cowle, Coule, Coules, but the family generally adopted the spelling [Cowles]."2
About this John Cowles, Flagg wrote:
"He is said to have been born in the west of England; was among the early settlers at Hartford and not long after 1640, located at Farmington, where he served as Townsman and in 1652, was one of those who organized the church there, being one of the 'Seven Pillars.' His land was on the corner at the north end of Farmington Village. Selling this property, he bought three lots just south of the present meeting-house and built his house there. He was a farmer; was Deputy to the General Assembly from Farmington at the October and November sessions of 1653 and the May session of 1654. It has been erroneously reported that he was one of the 'signers' who started the settlement at Hadley. (Judd's Hadley, 1905 edition, p. 11.) He was one of the twenty-five 'engagers' in Hadley to establish themselves at Hatfield, 'cross the River' before March 25, 1661, and his record there begins in January, 1660-1; Freeman, 1666. He was Townsman of Hadley, 1667. It is said that he spelled his name 'Cowles' to distinguish himself from another man in the same place named Cole, but this seems doubtful. He may have been a brother of James of Hartford."1
     Farmington, Connecticut, church records show:
"Anno Dom. 1652
"On the 23th of October 1652, Mr. Rodger Newton, Stephen Hart, Thomas Judd, John Bronson, John Coll, Thomas Thompson and Robert Porter, joined in Church Covenant, in Farmington.
...
"About one month after, Mrs. Newton, the wife of Stephen Hart, the wife of Thomas Judd, the wife of John Coll, and the wife of Thomas Thompson, also, join with them."3
When John Cowles helped form the church at Farmington in 1652, he had some children who were under thirteen years of age and they were considered to have joined with him.
"April 10, 1658
"The Children that were in adult [sic], when we entered into covenant at Farmington, [on the 13th of October 1652] according to the account of the Church, not being above 13 years old."
[Here follows a list of the children of several men of the church, including]
"John Colles's Children
"John Colles, 16 years old, about February, 1657.
"Hannah Colles, 13 years old, about February, 1657.
"Sarah Colles, 11 years old, 1657
"Hester Colles, 8 years old, 1657."4
"John Cowles served as member of a jury at a Particular Court at Hartford, Dec. 30, 1662, for the trial of Nathaniel Greensmith and his wife, Rebecca, charged with witchcraft, and as member of another jury at a Particular Court held at Hartford, January 6, 1662/3, for the trial of Mary Barnes of Farmington, Conn., and Elizabeth Seager, both charged with witchcraft. (See Conn. Colony Probate Records, II: 182, 184 in Office Secretary of State; Hist. First Church of Hartford; Colonial Hist. of Hartford: Manwaring's Digest I: 121; Mass. Hist. Collections, VIII: 466, in all of which his name appears as John Cowles.)5
"John Cowles died at Hatfield, Mass., between Sept. 11, 1675, the date of his will, and Sept. 15, 1675, the date of his inventory of his estate, aged 75 or 77 years. (Town Records.)
"The original will of John Cowles is lost, but the following is from a copy of it on file in the Probate Court at Northampton, Mass:

"The witneses were. John Cowles J (his marke)

"Note: The will of John Cowles as recorded on p. 177 of vol. 1 of Northampton Probate Records bears no date, but the will was offered for probate March 29, 1676, and the inventory of his estate is dated Sept. 15, 1676." Thus, it appears possible to disagree about the reading of the date on the inventory.1

Joseph Cowles was born on 18 Jan 1677/78 at Farmington, Connecticut.1,2,3 He was the son of Samuel Cowles and Abigail Stanley. Joseph Cowles married (1) Abigail Royce, daughter of Samuel Royce and Hannah Churchill, on 13 Jul 1699 at Wallingford, Connecticut.2,4 Joseph Cowles married (3) Mindwell (?) on 19 May 1717.2,5,6 Joseph Cowles died on 30 Nov 1760 at Meriden, Connecticut, at age 82.7 He was buried at Old Meeting House Hill Cemetery, Meriden, Connecticut.7
"The first of the Cowles family to live in Meriden was Joseph who came from Farmington and married Abigail, daughter of Samuel Royce on July 13, 1699. His father-in-law gave him a farm just south of Archer's corner in South Farms district, and in the year 1701, 107 acres up the hill on the old highway . . . ".8
"Mr. Cowles was a weaver by trade, and a deacon of the church."7
"The graves of Joseph Cowles and his wife, Mindwell, are marked by stones in the Old Meeting House Hill Cemetery, Meriden. Upon a monument in the Cemetery are the following inscriptions: 'Erected by the Town of Meriden, 1857, in memory of the first settlers of the Town of Meriden who were buried within and near the enclosure, and whose names are inscribed on this monument. The Meeting House in which they worshipped, and the first erected in the Town, stood about fifty rods west of this monument.' Among others the following names appear: Joseph Cowles, Nov. 30, 1760, aged 83; Mindwell Cowles, April 17, 1770, aged 89."7
The children of Joseph Cowles are listed in the birth records of Wallingford, Connecticut. "Lowis" Cowles and "Ledia" Cowles, both as daughters of Joseph and Abigail, are listed as born on 5 April 1700. These may be twins or a double recording of the same event. The record also shows the births of five sons of Joseph and Abigail named Samuel Cowles and it includes the deaths of four of these. There appears to be some duplication.9 Seven children of Joseph, with some further detail, are also listed by Jacobus where they are assigned to Joseph and Abigail.10
Jacobus says this Joseph Cowles was a son of Samuel of Wethersfield and nephew of William Cole, b. 25 April 1653, son of Henry and Sarah (Ruscoe) Cole of Wethersfield, Connecticut. This implies a different ancestry for Joseph.11
Should this Joseph Coles (Cowles) be attached to a different line of descent?

Now, look at the family of Henry Coles:
The vital records of Connecticut give some facts about the family of Henry and Sarah Coles.
Henry mar. Sara Rusco, 10 Dec 1646, Hartford VR
Henry, son of Henry & Sara, b. 20 Sep 1647 - Middleton VR
James, son of Henry & Sara, b. 8 Feb 1649 - Middleton VR
John, son of Henry & Sara, b. 14 Feb 1652 - Middleton VR
William, son of Henry & Sara, b. 25 Apr 1653 -- Middleton VR
Sarah, dau of Henry & Sara, b. 22 Oct 1654 - Middleton VR
Samuel, son of Henry & Sara, b. 10 Sep 1656 - Middleton VR
Mary, dau of Henry & Sara, b. 11 Jun 1658 - Middleton VR
Joanna, dau of Henry & Sara, b. 1 Aug 1661 - Middleton VR
Abigail, dau of Henry & Sara, b. 28 Oct 1664 - Middleton VR
Rebecca, dau of Henry & Sara, b. 5 Apr 1667 - Middleton VR9

According to Savage, Henry died at Wallingford in 1676 and his widow Sara died at Saybrook in Jan. 1688 when nine of the children (not Sara) divided the estate. At this time, sons Henry and Samuel lived at Wethersfield, James and William lived in Wallingford, and John lived at Boston.12 There is ample room to place the Joseph Cowles or Coles who lived at Wallingford (1677 - 1760) as a grandson of Henry and Sara Cowles. They did have at least one grandson named Joseph, born September 12, 1681, son of Samuel, born 1656. This Joseph married Abigail Riley in 1709 so they were not the parents of the children of Abigal and Joseph Cowles who were born 1700 - 1712.13

The undated Hartford will of James Cole (Jeames Coale), with inventory taken in November 1652, says "I give all my Coopers tooles equally to be divided between my well beloved sonne William Edwards and my Loving Coussin Henry Coale."14 "The term cousin was then used for nephew frequently, and it is possible that this was the relationship Henry bore to James." 15 Although the will does not mention a son John Cole, Frank T. Cole explains: "Hinman says (page 204) that he had [a son John], and in the division of public land in November, 1674, the record says (Porter, p. 45) that John, the son of the original settler, James Cole, received 18 acres, and a year or two later in another division he received 15 acres and 5.8 acres. Again, in 1655, John Coal, residing on Wethersfield Lane, was admitted a freeman. Now Wethersfield Lane was where James Cole had lived (Porter, page 36). Savage says that he had a son John, who probably died young, but on what he based his judgement I am unable to say." This John Cole remained in the Hartford area and died in 1685.16

Samuel Cowles

Father*John Cowles (circa 1598-Sep 1675)
Mother*Hannah (?) (-16 Mar 1683/84)
Relationship8th great-grandfather of Daniel Wayne Olds

Samuel Cowles was born in 1639 at (probably) Hartford, Connecticut.1 He was the son of John Cowles and Hannah (?). Samuel Cowles married Abigail Stanley, daughter of Timothy Stanley and Elizabeth (?), on 14 Jun 1660 at Farmington, Connecticut.2,3 Samuel Cowles died on 17 Apr 1691 at Farmington, Connecticut.4
Cowles5 says that all the children were born in Farmington, Connecticut. The last three are not reported in the Barbour Index for Farmington.
All eleven children are, however, listed in the records of the church at Farmington as:
"Samuel Coles, the son of Samuel Coles, born March 17, 1661. Baptized about a year old.
"Abigail Coles, January, 1663
"Hannah Coles, December, 1664
"Timothy Coles, about November 4, 1666
"Sarah Coles, baptized December 25, 1668
"John Coles, born June 28, 1670 -- baptized the Sabbath following
"Nathaniel Coles, born February 11, 1672, -- baptized the Sabbath following
"Isaac Coles, born March 28, 1675, -- baptized the same day
"Joseph Coles, born January 18, 1677, -- baptized the same day
"Elizabeth Coles, born March 17, 1679/1680, baptized immediately after.
"Caleb Cowles, baptized June 25, 1682, -- born a few days before."6
Samuel Cowles probably went to Hartford [from Farmington] in 1656 with his parents and probably was married there at his bride's home, but the record of their marriage is in the Farmington Land Records, Vol. 1, page J. In 1671, Samuel's father gave him the lands in Farmington and his name appears in the town records until the time of his death. His inventory was dated 13 May 1691.7
"He was one of the eighty-four proprietors of Farmington in 1672; inherited his father's estate there and became one of the leading citizens. He was a man of energy, enterprise and possessed what passed for wealth at that time. Joined the Church with his wife in 1690; was the progenitor of the Connecticut branch of the Cowles family as his brother John was of the Massachusetts branch. ("The Stanley Families," p. 331.)4 He left a will on 15 Apr 1691 at Farmington, Connecticut.
"I Samuel Cowles doe make this my last Will and Testament: The Land I have already given to my eldest son Samuel I doe hereby ratify & confirm unto him, and with other Lands I doe give to my son Samuel a double portion of all my Lands, either divided or undivided, in Farmington, with the rest of my sons at my Decease. I give to my wife Abigail Cowles the benefit of the Middle part of my homelott, with all my houseing & Barnes, & a third part of all my other Lands in Farmington, during her natural life; & the Use of all my household Goods, she paying my daughter Elizabeth £20 at 18 years of age. I give all my houseing & Land, layd out or not layd out unto my other six sons, Timothy, John, Nathaniel, Isaac, Joseph & Caleb, to be equally divided amongst them at 21 years of age, onely reserveing my wive's thirds & part of the Homelott, to be divided after my decease amongst all my sons. My Will is that the younger sons' Land shall be in my wive's improvement until they be of age to receive their portions in Land; or, in Case of her decease, in my son Samuel's Improvement, with whom I leave the special Care of my young Children. Having given to my daughters that are married £20 to each, and ordered £20 to be paid to my daughter Elizabeth, I give unto my four daughters, after the decease of their Mother, all my Household Goods, to be equally divided amongst them. I appoint my wife Abigail Cowles and my son Samuel Cowles to be Executors, & Brother Thomas Bull and Brother Thomas Porter to be Overseers.
Samuel Cowles, Sen. Ls.
Witn: Caleb Stanley
Sarah Stanley"

The will was proven 3 Sept. 1691.8
