Mr. (?) Cole
M
Relationship | 10th great-grandfather of Daniel Wayne Olds |
Last Edited | 29 Sep 2015 |
Mr. (?) Cole was the father of three (perhaps four) brothers who came to Plymouth Colony. According to Hills1, three brothers Job, John, and Daniel Cole came to Plymouth with William Collier, a merchant of London. They arrived on the ship "Mary and James" in 1633.2,3,4 James Cole of Plymouth may also have been a brother. Hunt5 shows a connection of this family to Zaccheus Cole who was a citizen grocer of London at St. Olave's, Southwark, Surrey6, when he wrote his will on 16 Nov 1630. This will named his mother Frances and brothers Nathaniel, John, Daniel and Job and mentions William Collier. Anderson7 treats James Cole, in Plymouth by 1633, Job Cole of Plymouth by 1633, Rice Cole of Charlestown by 1630, Samuel Cole of Boston by 1630, and Robert Coles of Roxbury by 1630 but does not connect them. Anderson does mention that Job Cole had brothers Daniel and John.

Daniel Cole married Ruth (?). Daniel Cole was born c 1615.1 He was the son of Mr. (?) Cole. Daniel Cole died on 20 Dec 1694 at Orleans, Massachusetts.2,1 His estate was probated on 15 Jan 1694/95 at Barnstable County, Massachusetts. This record provides the names of additional children. The inventory was taken on 24 December 1694 and mentions no real estate although the settlement does. Israel Cole, son of Daniel Cole, late of Eastham, was appointed administrator as desired by the other children. The estate was settled with the consent of his children John Cole, Timothy Cole, Israel Cole, James Cole, William Cole, Daniel Cole and Thomas Cole, Daniel Doan and his wife Hipsibah, John Young and his wife Ruth, Joshua Hopkins and his wife mary and Medad Atwod and his wife Hester. The names appear to be in order by gender and age and thus list provides the names of three younger children -- Daniel Cole, Thomas Cole, and Hester Atwood not included in the birth records. After agreeing that they should each have what their father had given during his life and that Thomas should have the place where their father lived, it was agreed that John Cole got £13, 8s., Timothy Cole £9, Israel Cole £9, James Cole £9, William Cole £9, Daniel Cole £9, Thomas Cole £9, Hipsibah Doan £12 , 9s., Ruth Young £12, 9s., Mary Hopkins £12, 19s., Hester Atwood £12, 19s. "The division was signed by John Cole (by a mark), Timothy Cole (by a mark), Israel Cole , James Cole (by a mark), William Cole, Daniel Cole, Thomas Cole (by a mark), Daniel Doan (by a mark), Hipsibah Doan (by a mark), John Young, Ruth Young (by a mark), Joshua Hopkins (by a mark), Mary Hopkins (by a mark), Medad Atwood, Esther Atwood (by a mark). All of the fifteen signers acknowledged their signatures, 15 January 1694/5, before the Judge of Probate."3
A part of Daniel Cole's family is recorded in a Town Record book rebound from Volume I and now called "Land Grants, 1659 - 1710: Births, Marriages and Deaths, 1649 - 1760" .
"Daniel Cole b ca 1614 d 21 Dec 1694 age 80 m RUTH (prob CHANDLER d/o Edmund & Elizabeth Chandler) b ca 1625 d 15 Dec 1694 aged 69. Daniel's wife has been considered as Ruth Collier, Ruth Snow, Ruth Chester or Ruth Chandler. William Collier had no daughter Ruth. A Ruth Snow married Daniel's son John. No Ruth Chandler has been discovered in this area. Edmund Chandler's will dated 3 May 1662 mentions daughter Ruth. A reference to marriage of Mary (Paine) Rogers to Israel Cole states him to be s/o Daniel and Ruth (Chandler) of Eastham. Thus the most likely choice is Ruth Chandler.
"Daniel Cole with his brothers Job and John London Merchant William Collier came to Plymouth in 1633. John's will mentions his brothers, Job and Daniel.
"After marriage, Daniel left Plymouth for Yarmouth and in 1643 was listed there as able to bear arms; admitted as freeman in 1645. In 1648 he was on the jury which tried Alice Bishop for infanticide. In 1650 he removed to Eastham, serving as deputy to the General Court, five terms as selectman, constable and other public offices. In 1662 he was appointed to keep account of importations of liquors, lead and powder."5
Another part of the family of Daniel Cole is recorded on a page of the Eastham Town records as:
On 16 Oct 1659 "William Colyare of the Towne of Duxbburrow in the Jurisdiction of Plymouth in New England in America Gentl" gave to "my soninlaw Daniell Cole" land on Cape Cod including "my Right and Interest in the blubber; which as a privilidge belongeth unto the said land".7 "Son-in-law" at this time may have had a meaning other than the one in use today. Twelve children of William Collier have been identified in English records and Ruth is not included.8 If Ruth Cole's age at death is correct, she was born before William Collier came to New England but after his other children (and thus was not a product of his wife's previous marriage).
A part of Daniel Cole's family is recorded in a Town Record book rebound from Volume I and now called "Land Grants, 1659 - 1710: Births, Marriages and Deaths, 1649 - 1760" .

"Daniel & Ruth Cole
"James Cole the Sonne of Danyel Cole was borne December in the yeare 1655
"Daniel Coole hath a Daughter named Mary was borne the 10th of March in the yeare one thousand six hundred fifty eaight

James Washington Cole was born on 2 Feb 1820 at Dearborn County, Indiana.1,3 He married Phila Olds, daughter of Lewis Wilson Olds and Louisa E. Ackerly, on 21 Sep 1892.1 James Washington Cole died on 5 Jun 1907 at age 87.1,4
James Washington Cole and Phila Olds appeared on the census of 15 Jun 1900 at Greencastle, Putman County, Indiana, as follows:
"James Washington Cole was born in Dearborn county, Indiana, February 2, 1820, the eldest son of Solomon and Sarah (Remy) Cole, the former born in Maryland, near Philadelphia, August 11, 1784, and the latter born near Winchester, Virginia, January 12, 1797. Their marriage occurred April 29, 1819, in Indiana, to which state they came about the time the state was admitted to the Union. The Coles were of English origin and among the earliest of those who came and conquered the forests of Indiana.
"James W. Cole, the eldest of nine children, was reared to a life of toil. He came to Putnam county, Indiana, in the spring of 1863 and engaged in the pump manufacturing business. In 1865 James W., Robert S., William R. and John J. Cole organized a company, incorporated for ten years under the laws of Iowa, at Mt. Pleasant, that state, with a capital of thirty thousand dollars, for the manufacture of lightning rods and pumps. In 1875 they were able to re-organize with a paid-up capital of two hundred thousand dollars. They eventually gave up pump manufacturing.
"In 1863 James W. Cole came to Putnam county, and became president of the company, which did a large and lucrative business. Mr. Cole was in many ways a notable man. He was very philanthropic and took a broad and liberal stand in favor of all movements for the social and moral uplift of the community. Full of energy, and of good business judgment, he usually pushed to success whatever he undertook. Fraternally, he was a Knight Templar Mason and an Odd Fellow. He was a Republican of very decided views and enthusiastic in supporting the party ticket, but he never sought office. He died June 5, 1907, at his home in Greencastle.
"On December 24, 1853, Mr. Cole married Susan Olivia Mathers, who died March 30, 1891, without issue. September 21, 1892, Mr. Cole married Phila Olds, of Erie. Pennsylvania, a lady of distinguished ancestry. Her parents were Lewis Wilson and Louisa E. (Ackerly) Olds, the former born in East Mill Creek, Erie county, Pennsylvania, July 21, 1822, and the latter at Middletown, New York, March 11, 1826."6
