Matthew Altemus was the son of Mary Frances Olds.1
His obituary states: "Matthew Altemus, 36 DURHAM -- Matthew John Altemus, born 1972 in Pittsburgh, Pa., died unexpectedly Monday evening. Having been challenged his whole life with cystic fibrosis that left him fighting against great odds, he never once backed down. Matt's love for life energized him and all who knew him. Matt could always be counted on for a peaceful smile. Raised in Cumberland, Matt attended Greely High School and went on to Husson College where he graduated with honors with a BS in business. Matt eventually found that being a small business owner worked best for him and purchased Squeaky Clean Laundromat. As owner and proprietor, Matt's business grew to what it is today, due in no small part to the dedicated employees who found Matt to be a great boss. Matt used much of his time away from work pursuing a number of interests. He liked fast cars, fast motorcycles, fishing, hunting, remote control planes, and for a time, bee keeping. For many years, Matt played hockey. Matt cherished his times at the family camp on Mooselookmeguntic Lake near Oquossic. It was there that Matt truly discovered his love for the outdoors. Many fond memories will be cherished that involved Matt at the lake, either on the water or on the snow. Matt's drive to be out on the water continued right up to recent days, with time spent on the ocean with his cousins in Key Largo, Fla., where his family had spent lots of good times visiting his late grandfather and grandmother. Matt is survived by his mother and father, Mary Fran and Dr. Reed Altemus; his older brother, Reed Altemus III, his sister and brother-in-law, Mary Sue and Jeff Landry, and sister and brother-in-law, Annie and Stacy Davis; also his favorite roommate Bristol, the B-man. From early on, Matt's care was compassionately and skillfully directed and supervised by Dr. Jonathan Zuckerman, whom Matt felt very close to. Matt got through some of his harder challenges with his close friends, Ben and Missy, Pam, John, Matt and Karl. While in Cleveland, Matt befriended Dave, Sam, Terry and Heather, who were staff and supporters at the Cleveland Clinic, all of whom helped Matt throughout his lung transplant and subsequent treatments. Matt was blessed also with a large extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins with whom he shared many great moments. Friends are invited to a memorial service celebrating the joy of Matt Altemus's time with us on Saturday, June 21, at 3 p.m. at the Cumberland Congregational Church, 202 Main St., Cumberland. William Ames was christened on 6 Oct 1605 at Bruton, Somerset, England. He married Hannah (?) c 1640. William Ames died on 11 Jan 1653/54 at Braintree, Massachusetts, at age 48.1
He is on the ancestor roster for the Colonial Dames XVIIth Century. According to the listing, William Ames migrated to Massachusetts . William Ames was baptised in 1605 and died in 1653. He married Hannah ____ and was a Freeman in 1647.2 He probably came to America with his brother John in 1635.
ToDo: Check Genealogy of the Ames family of North Easton, Massachusetts, 1560-1937 [Unknown Binding] Winthrop Ames (Author) for the ancestry of William Ames from Bruton, Somerset, England.
Faber Ames devotes a page to presenting a tabular listing of one Ames family of Bruton in Somerset, England. Most or all of this information appears to have been derived from a book by Winthrop Ames. According to this table, our ancestors were:
"I. John Ames. All that is known of this earliest ancestor from whom the Ames family can trace direct descent is that he was born about 1520 [obtained by assuming an "average" age at death] and he was buried in Bruton, Somerset, England, February 21, 1560 and that he had at least one son. [John Ames, below.]"
"II. John Ames, son of John Ames (1). Born, Bruton, England about 1540, died there in 1583. Married, Septemer 25, 1559, Margery Crome (or Brome)."
[3 sons listed -- John, Launcelot, and William.]
"III. John Ames*, eldest son of John Ames (II). Christened, Bruton, England, May 1, 1560; died there in 1629. Married, October 12, 1601, Cyprian (or Xpian) Browne. She died in 1624.
"Issue (All born in Bruton, England)
"1. Thomas Ames, died in infancy - (1602)
"2. Henry Ames, christened July 25, 1603.
"**3. William Ames, christened October 6, 1605 - died January 11, 1654
"**John Ames, christened December 2, 1610 - died C. A. 1698
"Mary Ames, christened April 1, 1613.
"*Note: In Nahum Mitchell's "History of Bridgewater" (1840), which contained the first Ameraican account of the family, this John Ames of Bruton is called Richard -- an error copied in several subsequent records."
"***William Ames and his brother, John Ames, came to America in 1635."3
The Bruton Parish Registers (which start in 1554) have been published and, guided the names and dates above, I found the following:

In 1829, John Farmer wrote: "AMES, JOHN, son of Richard Ames, of Bruton, in Somersetshire, came to N. E. and settled at Bridgewater, and died leaving no children. His son John, b. 34 May, 1647, settled in Bridgewater, and had 5 sons, John, Nathaniel, Thomas, William, and David. Nathaniel, who was b. 1677, and died in 1736..."5
Nahum Mitchell introduces the Ames family by saying "John and William Ames were sons of Richard Ames of Bruton, Somersetshire, England; the former settled in W.
