John Snider

M, (1770 - )
Last Edited28 Jan 2006
John Snider married Catherine Ulrich, daughter of Samuel Ulrich and Mary Brumbaugh. John Snider was born in 1770.
He was a farmer and member of the German Baptist Brethren Church. He died in 1855 and is buried in Snake Spring Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. They had seven children -- John, Jacob U., Elvina, David, Margaret, Maria, and Samuel.1
Brumbaugh may be incorrect on the dates for John since the 1850 census of Bedford County lists the family of John (age 65) and Catherine (age 63) and in 1860 Snake Spring Township, John (age 75) and Catherine (age 72) Snider are listed. They were both born in Maryland and, in 1860, held real estate valued at $80,000.

Joseph Snow married Mary (?).1 Joseph Snow was born c 1634.1 He was the son of Nicholas Snow and Constance Hopkins. Joseph Snow died on 3 Jan 1722/23 at Eastham, Massachusetts.2
"Some genealogists question Joseph Snow's marriage record; possibly because, so far as official records show, he did not marry Mary Higgins until he was 35, very old for that era. Thus, he is credited with having married a ____? Rogers before 1670. Other accounts have him married to an "Elizabeth Smith" in ?? and/or a "Hannah Storrs" or a "Mary Storrs." Certain sources also contest his wife Mary Higgins' being the daughter of Richard Higgins & Mary Yates, both early Massachusetts settlers. It has also been said that Joseph's wife Mary Higgins (or Mary UNK), whom he married in 1670, died between 1694 and 1698 and that Joseph then married Mary Storrs and that she is the "widow Mary" named in his 1717 Will and 1723 Inventory. In the current state of research, these alternatives should be mentioned here but unless and until credible sources are found, they remain unproven. The "majority" story is that Joseph Snow married Mary Higgins in 1670 and they had 11 children and that she died after his January 1723 passing, being named an Executor of his will with their son Josiah Snow."3
The family of Joseph Snow is recorded on a page of the Orleans Town Records:
"Joseph Snow the sonne of Joseph Snow was borne the: 24th of November: 1671"
"Benjamine Snow the sonne of Joseph was borne the: 9th day of June: 1673
"Mary Snow the daughter of Joseph Snow was borne the: 17th of october: 1674:
"Sarie Snow the daughter of Joseph Snow was borne the: 30th of Aprill: 1677
"Ruth Snow the daughter of Joseph Snow was borne the: 14th of october: 1679
"Steuen Snow the sone of Joseph Snow was borne the: 24th of Feburarie: 1681
"lidia Snow the daughter of Joseph Snow was borne the: 20th:of July: 1684
"Rebeckah Snow the daughter of Joseph Snow was borne the: 4th of December: 1686
"James Snow the son of Joseph Snow was borne the 31th day of March in the year: 1689
"Jane Snow the daughter of Joseph was borne the 27th day of March in [the year??]: 1692
"Josiah Snow the son of Joseph Snow was borne the twenty seventh day of November: in the year one thousand six hundred ninety and foure"
Written along the margin beside this list is
"Lieut Joseph Snow dyed on the third day of January annodom 1722/3"
This record mades no mention of the wife and mother in this family.2
"He m. MARY ____, who died after 30 Jan. 1722/23, otherwise unidentified. It has been suggested that she was dau. of Richard and Mary (Yates) Higgins.
"Joseph Snow res. at Eastham and was named Lieutenant of the military company there 2 Oct. 1689.
" The will of Joseph Snow, yeoman of Eastham, date 23 Nov. 1717 and proved 30 Jan. 1722/3, mentioned wife Mary and, four sons Benjamin, Stephen, James (executor), and Josiah Snow; two grandsons, Nathaniel Snow and Joseph Snow; and 'four daughters and granddaughters, Sarah Young, Lydia Lincoln, Ruth Brown, Deborah Snow and Rebekah Hamilton.' [five names] The identities of the two last named are unclear. Inventory was taken 1 Feb. 1722/3. Since James Snow had died before his father, widow Mary Snow and son Josiah were named administrators on 30 Jan. 1722/3."1
