Sarah Knight?

F, (c 1765 - Nov 1849)
Last Edited23 Dec 2014
Sarah Knight? was born c 1765 at North Carolina?. She married Nathan Deaton, son of Captain William Deaton.1 Sarah Knight? died in Nov 1849 at Yancey County, North Carolina.2
     "'Granny' Knight -- (1768 - 1850)
"Very little is known about Granny Knight, as Sarah was known. Nathan may have met and married her in Chatham County where several Knights were living. A story that has been handed down, however, is that he met her somewhere on the way as he was coming to the mountains. Some credence may be given this story, since a family of Knights, conisting of Mary, widow of Thomas, Sr. and two sons, Thomas, Jr., and Jonathan settled about this time on Grassy Creek. As early as 1790, Mary had entered two hundred acres consisting of a portion of the Wm. Wiseman farm and other land lying on Rock House Creek. But no other evidence of any kind has been uncovered tending to show a relationship of Sarah to this family.
"Another story that has been handed down relates to Sarah's brother, John, who is recorded as a chain bearer in one of Nathan's surveys. John's chief interest seemed to be horse racing. He participated in races far and near and usually came out a winner. Tragedy struck, however, in his last race. Leading the field by more than a length at the end, his horse stumbled, and threw him against a tree, killing him instantly."3,4 The 1850 mortality schedule for Yancey County, North Carolina, lists widow Sarah Deyton, age 82, b. N.C., as having died in Nov. [1849] of apoplexia. Thus, she was born about 1768 and was of the age to be Nathan's wife and the lady called Granny Knight by Jason Deyton. Since Margret signed as Nathan's wife in 1787, it is no longer clear who was the mother of which of Nathan's children.
"I was glad to get your note regarding the death of Sarah Deyton, wife of Nathan. This confirms the story my parents told me that 'Granny Knight' lived with her son William most of the time after the death of Nathan. Nathan died about 1833. I discovered this only yesterday. In 1834 Thomas Deyton and Eldride [sic] Deyton were administrators of the estate of Nathan Deyton, deceased. I am unable to place Eldridge."5
