Caroline M. Brooks was born on 17 Dec 1844 at Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana.1,2 She married Henry G. Olds, son of Noble Granger Olds and Elizabeth Woolsey, on 9 Mar 1864 at Allen County, Indiana.3,4,5,6 Caroline M. Brooks died on 24 Oct 1933 at age 88.7,8 She was buried on 27 Oct 1933 at Lindenwood Cemetery, Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana.2
In Dec 2013, A. E. "Buddy" Holmes wrote me about his idea that Henry G. Olds must have had a wife before Caroline. This wife would have been a daughter of John B. Bourie and his Indian wife whose name is not known. Bourie is mentioned in many agreements between the federal government and the Miami and Potawatomie Indians. Henry Olds is mentioned in some of these. Desdemona Bourie, who is listed as "sister" with Henry's family in the 1900 census, was another daughter of John B. Bourie.9
Later, I found an obituary of Brutus A. Bourie10 This tells he was a son of Capt. and Mrs. John Bourie and was survived by sisters Desdemona Bourie and Mrs. H. G. Olds. Perhaps Caroline was the Bourie relative. Miss Desdemona Bourie filed a claim against the estate of her brother for her services as housekeeper and for housework from July 1893 to January 1900.11 According to the 1900 and later city directories for Ft. Wayne, Maria Theresa Bourie was the widow of Brutus.
According to the obituary of Mrs. James Kane, she was Amelia Brooks, daughter of the late Dr. Brooks, was born in Ft. Wayne and had married on 29 March 1875. Survivors were her husband, a son Alfred Kane, and brothers and sisters "Mrs. H. G. Olds, Miss Bessie Bourie, Oscar Brooks, L. T. Bourie and Brutus Bourie."12
Subsequently, I found the marriage record of Henry G. Olds and Caroline Brooks in 1864 with no indication of a prior marriage of either one and no requirement to do so.
Next, I found the marriage of William H. Brooks and Nancy Ann Bourie on 15 May 1842 in Allen County, Indiana.13 Holmes identifies this person as "Maria Ann "Nancy" Chapoton, daughter of Maria Catherine Meloche and Louis Alexis Chapoton and niece of Mary Frances Meloche, was born on December 28, 1800 in Michigan Territory. Nancy married John Baptiste Bourie, Sr.. Nancy also married Joseph Brown. Nancy then married William H Brooks on May 15, 1842S1 in Allen County, Indiana. He shows her as the mother of Desdemona Bourie, Lewis Thompson Bourie, and Brutus Bourie.14

Nelson B. Brooks was born on 23 Jan 1858 at Lenawee County, Michigan.1,2 He married Rose Amelia Olds, daughter of Darwin Green Olds and Evaline N. Eaton, on 12 Aug 1883 at Middleton, Oregon.1,2 Nelson B. Brooks died in Jun 1928 at Goldendale, Washington, at age 70.3
"HON. NELSON B. BROOKS. Prominent among the most substantial citizens of Klickitat county, widely and favorably known throughout southern Washington and northern Oregon, a successful business man and a leading attorney of the state in which he resides is the subject of this biographical sketch. His labors have been directed along many lines, but, notwithstanding this diversity, he has won success in all and has developed to an unusual degree that rare and characteristically American quality — versatility. Amid the pine forests of Lenawee county, Michigan, Nelson B. Brooks was born January 23, 1858, the son of Emory E. and Martha (Taylor) Brooks, pioneers of that state. ... . Nelson B. was fifteen years old when he came to Oregon with his father. He assisted on the farm and attended school during the next five years, receiving a high school education. Then, when twenty years old, he commenced teaching school, first in Washington and Yamhill counties. Oregon. He came to Klickitat county in the month of May, 1880. and that spring filed on a homestead claim lying twenty miles west of the city. The succeeding seven years he made this farm his home during the summer months and taught school in the surrounding country during the winter months. Four years after coming to the countv he was elected principal of the Goldendale school, and capably filled this position during the years 1885 and 1886, leaving it late in 1886 to become county superintendent by appointment to fill an unexpired term. In that capacity he served five years, being twice elected to the same office afterward. While superintendent he determined to enter the legal profession, and. with that end in view, read law in the office of Hiram Dustin four years. His energy and perseverance were rewarded by his admittance to the bar October 8, 1892, after having passed a creditable examination before the state board of examiners. He at once opened an office in Goldendale, and since that date has been steadily rising into prominence in his chosen profession. As an attorney, Mr. Brooks won national recognition in 1898 through his victory over the Northern Pacific Railway Company in a suit involving the title to 230,000 acres in Washington and Oregon. The case was dropped by the company after decisions had been rendered against it by the superior and state supreme courts. Mr. Brooks, who fought the settlers' case unaided, won his magnificent victory through the establishment of an interpretation new to the courts of the United States. For his services he received a sum that did not even pay his expenses, acting for a small coterie of poor settlers. The history of this notable case is treated elsewhere in this volume.
"At Middleton, Oregon, August 12, 1883, he was united in marriage to Miss Rosa Olds, a native Oregonian, born April 25, 1861, to the union of Green and Eveline Olds. ... . Mrs. Brooks was educated in the schools of Washington county and in the McMinnville high school. She taught school previous to her marriage, spending six years in the profession in Oregon and Washington. One child, Zola O., born in Goldendale, July 18, 1892, blesses the home of Mr. and Mrs. Brooks. Mr. and Mrs. Brooks take a keen interest in the social life of the community and are inestimably rich in loyal friends and well wishers. Mr. Brooks is identified with the Masons, Knights of Pythias, United Artisans, Eastern Star and Rathbone Sisters, and Mrs. Brooks belongs to the auxiliary lodges. Politically, he is a Democrat, though in 1882, when barely twenty-two years of age, he was elected on the Republican ticket as Klickitat's representative in the territorial legislature. In 1898 he was the Fusion candidate for state senator from his district. During the year 1895 he served as mayor of Goldendale. He was city attorney for the two succeeding years, and for the past ten or twelve years has been a member of the city council. Mr. Brooks also served as the county's first court commissioner: Always a military enthusiast, he was for five years adjutant of the Second regiment. Washington National Guard. His property interests are large, including the ownership of a large portion of the townsite of Goldendale, a modern two-story brick block on Main street, a controlling interest in the opera house, two other valuable business blocks and 400 acres of timber land. He has been largely instrumental in securing a railroad for the valley, by his own personal efforts obtaining the greater part of the C. R. & N.'s right of way. As early as 1895 he took a leading interest in railroad agitation, raising $1,300 that year for the purpose of making surveys and himself becoming a member of the surveying partv. He then collected an additional $2,000 from Goldendale's business men, and with this money the first mile of road was graded northward from Lyle. Mr. Brooks is recognized by all as a leader, and none has done more toward the upbuilding of Klickitat county and Goldendale than this "self-made" man of the people. His popularity with all classes is deserved, his success is justified.2 "
Nelson B. Brooks appeared on the census of 18 Apr 1910 at Goldendale, Klickitat County, Washington, as follows:
     Brooks, N. B., head, 52, marr. once, 26 years, b. Mich., father b. N. Y., mother b. Mich., lawyer in general practice

Mother*Frances "Fanny" Hoover2 (18 Jun 1809-27 Apr 1891)
RelationshipGreat-granduncle of Daniel Wayne Olds
Last Edited30 Sep 2020
Daniel W. Brown was born on 31 Oct 1838.2 He was the son of Samuel Ulrich Brown and Frances "Fanny" Hoover.2 Daniel W. Brown died on 10 Jul 1860 near Ft. Morgan, Colorado, at age 21.3
     D. W. Brown and Susan F. Peebler were married in Jefferson County, Iowa, on 19 Nov.1857.4 A 1966 newspaper clipping relates that he left for California on the day of his wedding to take part in the Gold Rush in California.
"Mrs. Russell Simmons, 406 E. Washington, has record of a wedding that took place in the parlor at the old hotel [Leggett Hotel, being razed in 1966] back in the days of the Gold Rush. Her maternal grandmother, Augusta Wayner [probably Wagner], had an older sister, Susan. Their maiden name was Peebler. At the age of 16, Susan was married to a young man in the Parlor of the original inn erected at that location. It was the Clay House operated by William Williams. It became the Leggett House when it was purchased in 1855 by Richard C. Leggett. It has been the Leggett Hotel since, a period of well over a century.
"The wedding took place early in the day. After the ceremony the wedding party drove to the home of the bride's parents one mile east and 2-1/2 miles south of Batavia where a dinner was held. That afternoon the young bridegroom, with a few other men, left by horseback for California to take part in the Gold Rush. The young bride climbed to the attic in the farm home and waved a dish towel from the window as long as she could see her new husband riding away over the prairie.
"After spending some time in California, he started back to Iowa with a group of 24 men. In the mountains of Colorado they experienced a violent rain and wind storm. They pitched their big tent early as the black clouds rolled in. They placed their gear around the edge of the tent and tucked the canvas under it. As they huddled together in the center of the tent to keep dry, lightning struck the pole and killed several men, the young groom included. Months later one of the survivors located Susan and informed her of her husband's death.
"A few years later she was married to Michael [sic] Springer in the same parlor in the same hotel building. They moved to Leon, Iowa, where their descendants still reside. While a young girl residing in Jefferson County, nearby Indians called her 'Sukey Blueskin Cracker'. No one could guess where they got "Cracker" since it in no way resembled Peebler. However, the name stuck with her all her life."5
This story is not quite in agreement with our family’s version of this incident. He was not killed until several years after the wedding. It may be that the departure and return described above are for two different trips, since the Daniel W. Brown and family listed in the 6 June 1860 census of Jefferson County, Iowa. Ellis is probably the “Elbo?” Brown, son of D. W. and S. R [sic] Brown, died 14 July 1866, aged 7 years, 6 months, 14 days, and buried next to Samuel Brown.6 Susan (Peebler) Brown was baptized into the Brethren Church in 1859, but the record does not mention Daniel Brown.7 On 3 Feb. 1868, David Springer, age 35, and Susan F. Peebler Brown, age 29, were married at Leggett House in Fairfield, Iowa, by Rev. Maynard.7,8 The obituary says Daniel W. Brown, son of Samuel and Fannie Brown, of Jefferson County, Iowa, died 10 July 1863 [sic], age 21y, 9 m., 19d., leaving a wife and one child to mourn their loss. An account for the estate of Daniel W. Brown, decd., was filed by Joseph Sketoe in Sept., 1860, in Jefferson County, IA.
In 2017, I received more documentation of this story:
"On September 9, 1860, Aurelius T. Bartlett was returning from Pikes Peak, Colorado and wrote in his overland trail diary '. . . now camped a few rods from a grave containing the remains of D. Thompson, Q. Stanley, and D. W. Brown from Jefferson Co. Iowa who were killed by lightning July 10th, 1860.' At that time Bartlett was near Ft. Morgan, Colorado on the south bank of the South Platte River.
"The July 19, 1860 issue of the Western Mountaineer of Golden, Colorado, p. 2, c. 2, reported that Quinton Stanley, D. W. Brown and Daniel Thompson of Jefferson County, Iowa were killed by lightning 100 miles east of Golden on July 11. This is just a few miles west of where Bartlett reported seeing the grave.
"As you know, a difference of a few miles in a trail grave location and one day for the date of death of an individual is not unusual when using disparate sources."3
Daniel W. Brown appeared on the census of 6 Jun 1860 at Batavia, Des Moines Township, Jefferson County, Iowa, as follows:
     84 Daniel W. Brown, 21, farmer, b. Penn.
      Susan , 21, b. Iowa
      Ellis , 1, b. Iowa.9
