James Ould was born s 1720.2 He married (1) Elizabeth Fuller c 1744. Their marriage intentions were recorded at Attleborough, Massachusetts, on 12 May 1744.3,4 James Ould married (2) Sarah Kingsley on 21 Mar 1754 at Ashford, Windham County, Connecticut.1,5
ToDo: TODO: James Ould, whose parentage is still sought, is said by Edson B. Olds to have marched on the Lexington alarm in 1775. His first known child was born in 1745 in Attleborough, Massachusetts, and this has given an estimated marriage date of 1744 and implies a birth date in the early 1720s. In 1775, he would have been in his early 50s. If a James Ould marched on the Lexington alarm in 1775, would it not more likely be James Ould, Jr., born in 1747. What do the records show? In fact, throughout my report on James Ould are records for which it is not certain whether they apply to the father or the son.
Edson B. Olds introduced this family as: "James Ould, a farmer, was living in North Ashford, Windham Co., Conn., in 1750; married first, Elizabeth ------ (born 1724, died August 4, 1753); married second, March 21, 1754, Sarah Kingsley, at Ashford. In 1770 he was one of the subscribers to the pews in the Congregational Church at Ashford, and marched on the Lexington alarm, 1775. He was possibly a son of Ebenezer Ould, son of Robert Ould. All of his children were born at North Ashford, Conn." His children later used the surname spelling Olds.1
Generations after the fact, a biography of a descendant says of this man (an unnamed great grandfather of the subject) that he was a native of England and settled in Vermont, that he was a seaman who had been rewarded by King George for capturing a celebrated Scottish pirate. No evidence is known to me.6 A similar reference says [William Parker Olds] "is a scion of one of the colonial families of America, being a descendant in the fifth generation of Gideon Olds, an Englishman, who came to the new world in 1732, settling in Massachusetts. The latter's son Timothy ..."7 The name Gideon Olds seems to be incorrect here.
Edson Olds suggests that James Ould, Sr., may have been a son of Ebenezer, son of Robert the immigrant. Since James was born in the early 1720s, he was surely not the son even of Robert's second wife, Dorothy (Granger) Old, born in 1665. A comparison of the Y-DNA results from Rodger C. Olds, descendant of James, posted at Ancestry.com, with those of other descendants of Robert Old (OLD family group at FamilyTreeDNA.com) indicates that James is a male-line relative of Robert rather than being, say, an illegitimate son of a daughter or having another origin altogether. There are many other sons of Robert to be considered and one son, Robert [Jr.], was already having grandhildren by the time James was born. Of course the DNA result may point to common descent from an ancestor earlier than Robert.
In 1952, Bela Gowen wrote:
"JAMES OLDS was undoubedly either the grandson or great-grandson of Robert Old (16), but through which of the sons of Robert Old the line of descent passes is not presently known to the compiler of this record. Edson Baldwin Olds was also unable to determine this point to his satisfaction and in his book he lists James Olds and family among those branches which he recognizes as descendants of Robert Old (16) but whose exact place in the family line he was unable to ascertain.
"While we may have the complete list of the children of Robert Old (17), Hanford Old (17), William Olds (17), John Old (17), Ebenezer Olds (17) and Nathaniel Old (17), this is by no means certain. For instance, it is obvious that there may have been in the family of Hanford Old (17) a child older than any whose name and birth date have come down to us. A much greater degree of uncertainty exists concerning the children of three other sons of Robert (16). We do not know whether the 1st Jonathan Old (17), who died in 1696 when about 25 years of age, left descendants. It is altogether likely that the 2nd Jonathan Old (17), who married Susana Temple, had more children that the two who were born at Suffield and whose names we know. Finally, there remains undetermined the question of whether Joseph Old (17) married and left descendants. Clarification of this point might give us the answer not only to the parentage of James Olds (18) but also to the line of descent for several other branches of the family which remains uncertain. Somewhere in this maze lies the solution to the riddle.
"From such information as is available it appears likely that James Olds (18) was born between 1723 and 1728, almost certainly in either Connecticut or Massachusetts, more likely the latter, and quite possibly in Berkshire County, which comprises the western part of the State of Massachusetts. Two of his sons, Daniel and Timothy, appear at Dalton in Berkshire County while still in their teens, Daniel barely past his sixeenth birthday. The attraction which drew them to that location at this early period in their lives is not definitely known but it was probably something of a family nature. Perhaps their grandparents, the parents of James Olds, lived there. A little later we find Daniel and Timothy both married and engaged in farming near Dalton and the adjoining community of Partridgefield, now Peru. It is possible that the farms they acquired there came to them from their grandparents and a search of land title records for that vicinity might reveal additional information which would aid in clearing up the position of in the family line.
"The first definite knowledge we have of James Olds is in 1750, when as a young married man he was engaged in farming at North Ashford, Conn., about 25 miles east of Suffield. Ashford and North Ashford are both in Windham County. A very lengthy and detailed history of this county from the time of its first settlement in the early 1600s was compiled and published by Ellen D. Larned a number of years ago. The name of Ould, Old or Olds does not appear in that history until after 1750 and we may with a considerable degree of confidence assume that James Olds moved to North Ashford shortly prior to 1750."8
A century of attempting to connect James Ould to Robert Old has failed. Brian Milone, writing on http://genforum.genealogy.com/olds on 26 July 2008 has suggested another possibility to consider. On the same day, Joyce O'Connell added more data. In chronological order, they have:
To which may be added:
1745-1752: The four children of James and Elezebeth are Bethiah, James, George and Elizabeth (i. e. reflecting the parents of these children and (hypothetically) their grandparents George and Bethiah (Martin) Olds.
1798 saw the births of two great-grandsons of James Olds named Martin Olds. Using that as proof of connection, however, is stretching the circumstantial case too far without some corroboration!
This approach, if proven, would place James Ould as a son of George and Bethiah (Martin) Olds but leaves George unidentified.
Since the identified descendants of James Ould in my files now exceed 600 in number, I have clearly put a lot of work into this family without being able to connect them to Robert. I commissioned some research into the problem by the New England Historic Genealogical Society. A few land records for James Oles/Olds at Ashford, Windham County, Connecticut, were found. In the earliest deed, dated 17 June 1748 (and recorded 27 February 1748/9), William Tyler, of Willington, Hartford County, Connecticut, sold land to James Oles of Attleboro, Bristol County, Masschusetts.9 "This was probably when James Olds first moved into the Ashford area." James Olds purchased 15 more acres in Ashford, this time from Abijah Brooks, on 9 March 1770.10
They were unable to locate information with family connections in the records of Revolutionary Services or pensions for men from Massachusetts or Connecticut. Looking into deed records for this family in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, they did turn up a deed from James Olds to Daniel Olds but nothing about their relationships, even to each other. Likewise, search for further information on James, George and Bethiah (Martin) Olds, provided no new information.11
This family (as Ould, Oulds) is recorded in two places in the vital records of Ashford, Connecticut. They appear in Book 1, pages 91-92, where the births of George, Elizabeth, and Ebenezer are recorded as well as the death of Elizabeth, wife of James, and the subsequent marriage of James and Sarah. In Book 4, page 16, are the births of George, Elizabeth, Ebenezer, John, Daniel, Sarah, Timothy, Tryphena, Eliger, and Ellidise (as the names are spelled). In this volume, Ebenezer's birth was first written as Elizabeth, George is recorded as born 17 June 1750 (had been 24 June in Book 1), and Elizabeth is reported as born 11 July 1752 (had been 6 July in Book 1). James Ould and Sarah Kingsley were reported as married Mar. 21, 1754 from Book 1, p. 92, and Mar. 20, 1753 from Book 4, p. 16. This probably reflects a difficulty in reading the original record although the last case may also reflect a problem with the calendar conversion.
The one other Ould entry is for Methiah who married Abraham Foster on 21 Sept. 1769. This is taken from Book 4, p. 30, and their daughter Meletiah, born 9 Aug 1770, is the only other Foster on that page.12 I have merged the record of daughter Methiah with Bethiah Ould, born in Attleborough, daughter of James and Elizabeth.
On 11 Feb 1768, when the Ashford church was being divided and the new Westford Society formed, James Ould was the first signer of the new covenant. In June, 1770, twenty new pews were assigned in the church, two families per pew. James Ould and Stephen Coye were assigned No. 16.13 The one-day service of James Old is reported on a List of Men who Marched from the Connecticut Towns for the Relief of Boston in the Lexington Alarm, April, 1775.14
On 29 March 1938, A. D. Hiller of the federal Pension Office wrote to Mrs. H. A. Dickson of Silver City, New Mexico, as follows:
""Reference is made to your communication in which you request the Revolutionary War Records of James Olds who served on the Lexington Alarm, married Sarah Kingsley in 1754, and of his son Daniel ... There is no claim for pension or bounty land on file based on service in the Revolution of a James Olds, under any spelling of the surname. Such claims are the source of data furnished by this office in regard to Soldiers of the Revolutionary War. Information in regard to his military service might be obtained from the Adjutant General, War Department, this city. ...15 "
It appears that a possibility worth exploring is that this family susequently moved to Vermont and then New York. M. Sapienza has supplied the text of a 1781 petition from Charlotte County, New York, to the Vermont Legislature as follows:
Charlotte County, New York, which contained much of western Vermont, was renamed Washington County in 1784. The town and village of Granville, New York, are currently on the eastern border of Washington County.
James Olds was admitted to the church at Middle Granville, Washington County, New York, about 1784. In 1785 he was baptized there along with Elijah, Elizabeth, James, Sarah, Tryphena and Eli.17 Although these names seem to connect to James (b. ca. 1720), his children were baptized much earlier and this may be the family of the son James, b. 1747.18
On 5 Oct 1786 David Barrows of Partridgefield, Berkshire, Massachusetts, sold to James Olds of Alford, Windham County, Connecticut, for two hundred pounds, a tract of land in Partridgefield which contained about 100 acres. This was the south half of a square tract of land that Barrows had purchased from the state of Massachusetts as part of a confiscated estate. The north half "now" belonged to Daniel Clark. "Said South half lands East on Francis Curtis South on James Cody and Saml Parker and from the Southwest corner of said Square running Northerly on the West line thereof until it comes to the ye Division thence Ely on said Clarks line to the northeast corner or however the same is otherwise bounded or reputed to be bound."19 Subsequently, on 5 Sep 1790, James Olds of Partridgefield, Berkshire County, sold for 180 pounds, to Daniel Olds of Partridgefield, yeoman, part of Lot no. 97, the southerly half of said lot, containing 100 acres by estimation. James Olds acknowledged this deed in Berkshire on 2 May 1791.20 Neither of the two deeds suggests any family connections for James or Daniel Olds.
James Ould appeared on the census of 1790 at Granville, Washington County, New York, as follows:
