Until more is known of the provenance of this document, it is like having a fragment of a family Bible record that has been removed from the Bible. Jacob Cummings company that went to the relief of Fort William Henry in August, 1757. Jonathan marched to Greenwood in that expedition. Jonathan also lived at Belchertown. Widow Olds, credited with 18 months service in the war, is named in a list of Belchertown men who served in the "present war" , dated 12 March 1781.7
The following lengthy quotation tells something of this family during the Revolution.
"In the days when the country was rife with preparations for maintaining the Revolutionary War, the recruiting agent was no uncommon sight even among the lonely farmhouses. Some of the companies formed were not so moral as was desirable to many of the families of the members.
"It happened that a partly-formed company of the undesirable sort appeared one day to enforce the enlistment of Jonathan Olds. He and his wife, Hannah Jones, did not favor his joining this company. After a very brief consultation, Jonathan requested a few minutes respite for prayer with his family. The request was granted, the men waiting outside, jesting and laughing meanwhile.
"Jonathan offered but a short prayer; the good wife Hannah took up the petition, while Jonathan quietly made his departure through the back door into the woods.
"The lengthening shadows roused the officer to the fact that enough time had been used; he demanded Jonathan's immediate presence. As no one appeared he entered the house and asked for Jonathan. Thereupon Hannah replied, "I will not tell you; find him if you want him." Search was at once begun; so thorough was it that floors were torn up and feather beds ripped open, but all in vain and the men departed.
"In the meantime Jonathan had swiftly made his way towards Springfield and in the morning was safely enlisted in one of the more orderly companies.
"Again and again the call for troops was repeated, and so ready was the response that Hannah Olds found herself with but one son to help care for her family, and he a mere lad.
"When the recruiting officer again appeared she dressed this son in his grandmother's gown and great frilled cap and seated him on a huge settle in the darkest corner of the room, by the fireplace. The officer inquired if she had a son at home old enough to enlist. She responded, "Yes," and was ordered to produce him; but she answered as before, "You must come and get him if you want him."
"Again her home was invaded by a search party and ruthlessly torn up. Once more the search was fruitless, for none thought to peer under the cap frill for a soldier.
"This woman is buried in the historic "Ould Burying Ground." Her grave is marked by a large slate tombstone, bearing the strange device of a great round face surrounded by clusters of fantastic stone curls. The entire stone is adorned with a conventional border of morning glories. ...
"Samuel Olds, who was born in 1756, was probably the lad referred to in the preceding story."8
Jonathan appears on a 9 Sep 1778 roll taken at White Plains, New York, for Capt. Charles Colton's Company, Col. John Greaton's Regiment. On 3 July 1779, he was "on duty" on the roll of Jonathan Loring's Company, 2nd Batallion Massachusetts Bay Forces under Col. J. Greaton (later 3rd Massachusetts Regiment) as taken at Constitution Island. Col. J. Greaton's Battalion ). On the roll dated at Bedford on 1 Oct 1779, he is shown as "att. the baggag sloop". Jonathan Olds, private, in the Lieut. Colonel's Company, 3rd Massachusetts Battalion, commanded by Col. John Greaton, appears on the company muster roll of Jan. 1, 1780, to July 1, 1780, dated July, 1780, which says he enlisted June 5, 1777, for 3 years and [was?] deceased Jan. 1, 1780. Another roll shows he enlisted 15 June 1777 for 3 years, deserted 1 Nov 1777, joined 1 May 1778, and was discharged and ends with the note "Removed 1 Jan. 1780." Some of these are the entries on index cards made from the respective rolls.9

"At the opening of the superior court yesterday morning ... The court then took up the suit of the Abiel Clapp estate against Jonathan and Hiram Olds, who live in the western part of Holyoke. The plaintiff in his old age deeded his farm to his neighbor, Jonathan Olds, on condition that the latter and his wife move to the Clapp farm and care for the plaintiff and his insane wife, a mortgage being given back which was to be annulled if the arrangement continued 10 years. The defence claim that, in connection with this transfer, a verbal agreement was made between the plaintiff and Hiram Olds that the latter should have certain personal property belonging to the plaintiff in return for working the farm, which he was expected to do so long as his father, Jonathan Olds, lived there. The whole bargain fell through in 16 months, and the administrator of Mr. Clapp's estate, ignoring the alleged parole agreement, sued both Jonathan and Hiram Olds for converting to their own use certain crops, stock and tools which the latter took from the Clapp farm to his own. A good many of the articles were returned, and the whole thing simmered down to a claim for the value of a cow, heifer and hog. The case lasted until dark, and the jury will bring in a sealed verdict Monday at 11:30 a.m. to which time the court is adjourned."12

"In the fall of 2013, Jonathan Hanford Olds, Academy Class of 1942, received the usual Charter Day mailing. He was living in Florida and had not been to Bryn Athyn since the 50th reunion of his class in 1992.
"This gentle reminder of his roots prompted him to call his attorney and cousin, Bob Adams, and ask to have his will rewritten. He wanted to leave an endowed scholarship to the Academy Secondary Schools. We didn’t hear anything more until August 2015 when we received an email from Jonathan’s nephew, Jonathan Smith of Glenview, telling us that his uncle, Jonathan Olds, had passed into the spiritual world and had left most of his estate to the Academy Secondary Schools.
"Jonathan was born on January 22, 1924, in Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania, to the late Charles Lewis Olds M.D. and his second wife, Irene Ayres Mansfield Olds. Charles and his first wife, Mary Johnson, a Smith College graduate also educated at Oxford, were both homeopathic physicians who became pioneers in the wilderness of Marco Island, Florida. There they raised three daughters: Saloma, Rosalie and Orida. With Mary's death, Charles returned to the Bryn Athyn area where he married Irene, who gave birth to Joselyn Olds Smith and her brother, Jonathan.
"Jonathan was a quiet, unassuming young man, living with his family in Huntingdon Valley. His father had a large homeopathic medical practice there. Jonathan was a member of Sigma Delta Pi in the Boys School. Since there was no yearbook during the war years, there are no surviving pictures or information on the Class of 1942. There is a picture in the 1940 yearbook. In surveying a number of his classmates, they affirmed that he was very shy and no one I could find had any contact with him after graduation.
"Jonathan Hanford Olds
"We know that Jon joined the Navy just as World War II was heating up. While stationed in Miami, he met his first wife, Mildred Dabney Hudson, and they were married in June 1945. One week later, Jon was transferred to the Navy Yard at Norfolk, Virginia. Then he was transferred to the USS Adonis, a Landing Ship Tank that had been converted to a repair ship, where he remained until the end of the war.
"He returned to his new wife in Miami and was hired by Pan Am World Airways. He was also studying at night at the University of Miami. Jon spent 37 enjoyable years with Pan Am, as Chief Project Engineer and Director for new aircraft, as well as Director for Communications.
"His wife Mildred died in 1981. A year later, Jon married Frances Agnes Gutman and took early retirement from Pan Am at age 59. They wintered in Key Largo, Florida, and the North Carolina mountains for the summer months until Frances’ death in September of 1987.
"Experience taught Jon that being around people was the best medicine for grief. He joined a local Fred Astaire ballroom dance studio for lessons where he met his late wife, Eva Milburn, a recent widow, and moved into her home in Horse Shoe, North Carolina. Jon served as President of the Memories Ballroom Dance Club for nine years, with Eva as secretary, until 2011. They were also members of the Four Seasons Dance Club and were joyous ballroom dancers as well as superb organizers and hosts.
"At age 79, Jon learned to fly a Cessna 172, bought a plane and took great pleasure in his adventures. He was a ham radio operator and took endless delight, as did his father before him, in working in their woods, sawing and chopping logs for the winter fireplace. A kind, active and hardworking man, he engaged in many different types of work on motors and other engineering challenges for 27 happy years before Eva died in March 2015.
"Jonathan never had children of his own, but is survived by nephews: Joel, Jonathan, Willard and Gilbert Smith of Glenview, Illinois, and Charles Smith of Cherokee Village, Arkansas; also by his second cousin, Martha Olds Adams and her husband, Bob, residents of Hendersonville, North Carolina.
"That invitation to Charter Day three years ago reignited the love he felt for the Academy and the time he spent here. Jonathan may have been quiet and unassuming in his younger years, but he blossomed and became very successful as an adult. He left a small fortune to the Academy Secondary Schools to establish the Jonathan H. Olds Memorial Scholarship. This endowed scholarship will continue to support many students and will make an immeasurable difference in their lives.
"Thank you, Jonathan. You will be remembered for generations to come."3

Joseph Olds married Almira A. Olds, daughter of Benjamin Olds and Lois Baldwin.2 Joseph Olds was born on 25 Oct 1794 at Marlboro, Vermont.3 He was the son of Joseph Olds and Sally Whitney.1 Joseph Olds died on 27 Apr 1847 at age 52.1
"...moved to Circleville, Ohio, in 1819, and studied law there; opened an office and was eminently successful for over a period of twenty years; was frequently a Representative in the Legislature and was State Senator from 1828 to 1831; was President of the Circleville Bank, and prominent in the political and financial transactions of his day in the State."3
"Joseph Olds, the Whig candidate for Congress in this district, was elected, last week, President of the Circleville Bank."4
Some biography of this Joseph Olds is found in a newspaer article about his brother Chauncy Olds: " But the eldest brother, Mr. Joseph Olds, deserves a special mention, since his talents and energy first brought his own family into notice. -- Many years ago, he came to Circleville from New England and engaged in teaching, and so diligent was he in the use of his time, as to fit himself thoroughly for the bar whilst pursuing his usual avocation. It could scarcely be said that he was a brilliant lawyer. His brilliancy, if he had any, consisted in his thorough examination of every case committed to him, and his singular power to make courts and juries take his views, and look at facts as he did. With not a particle of the storming elocution peculiar to Western lawyers, with no violent gesticulation, with no peculiar grade of manner, he only conversed with a jury, and "told right on what he did know." -- Having, by careful study and discipline, attained the faculty of presenting matters of fact and law, in such a way that common men could get a strong appreciation of whatever he presented, there was no lawyer in his district, who was so much a favorite with common men. He seemed like a sensible juryman among his fellows, modestly setting forth the verdict to be rendered; at the same time the extent and accuracy of his legal acquirements, together with his uniform decorum as a gentleman, secured him the admiration of his peers at the bar. An admirable lawyer, citizen, and man, his name is held in honored remembrance in the counties which enjoyed his practice, and at his death a few years since, he enjoyed the largest practice by far of any one in his own county."5
His obituary states:
"Death of Joseph Olds. -- This distinguished citizen of Ohio died at Circleville April 27th, aged about 52 years. The State Journal says -- "He was many years a member of the Legislature of Ohio -- and as early as the year 1825, contributed his full share in the important measures which distinguished the legislature of that period -- at which time our system of public improvement was entered upon, our revenue policy remodelled and improved, and a Common School system adopted. By a course of severe industry and unyielding integrity, he wrought for himself a reputation more honorable than riches -- more enduring than monuments of marble."6
Another obituary for Joseph states:
"Hon. Joseph Olds Dead
"We learn from the State Journal, that the Hon. Joseph Olds of Circleville, died at his residence in that town on the 27th ult., in the 52d year of his age. Mr. Olds held a high rank in the Whig party, which he has won by his great good sense and sterling integrity. For sore years past he has refrained from mingling in active political strife; and for a few months, we understand, he has been laboring under a clouded intellect, verging toward insanity, produced, in a great measure by domestic affliction."7

Joseph Olds was born on 26 Apr 1769 at Brookfield, Worcester County, Massachusetts.1,2 He was the son of Abner Old and Mary Snow.1 Joseph Olds married (1) Hannah Bissell in 1793.3,4 Joseph Olds married (2) Rhoda (?).5,6 Joseph Olds died on 17 Sep 1822 at age 537 and was buried at Hartland Cemetery, Niagara County, New York.8,9,10
His line is not carried forward in the body of the Olds genealogy, but on page 285 is a Joseph Olds "possibly the son of Abner, son of Robert". Typed and handwritten notes added to the copy of the Olds Genealogy at _____________ indicate "The records here, in the old bibles, historys, church and cemetery records, all complete this line with that of Joseph Olds, B-1769; son of Abner, B-Apr 28, 1724; son of Robert Olds. All sons of Joseph are buried at the Pioneer Cemetery, Hartford, Mich. and their sons, most of them."
Although Mrs. Yerington had records of the family in New York and Michigan, she mentions none that actually make the connection of Joseph to Abner. I have located no such records. Thus, Joseph is included here on expectation rather than on evidence. According to Olds5, the Joseph who begins the new, unconnected line at this point was born in 1769 and died 17 Sept. 1822. He married (1) Hannah Bissell, b. 1774, and married (2) Rhoda ______. "He was said to have been born and married in Connecticut; moved to Chautauqua County, N. Y., afterwards to Niagara Co., N. One of several typed pages among the papers of Edson B. Olds in the Bentley Historical Library, University of Michigan, is a page beginning with Abner Olds from page 64 of the Olds Genealogy. Abner had two sons, Joseph and William, and Joseph and his descendants are elaborated as follows:
"Joseph Olds, (son of Abner), b. Apr. 26, 1769, Brookfield, Mass., living in Vermont in 1803 & 1805; in Batavia, N. Y., 1810, 1820, 1830; married ------; died -----. [Pencilled additions: in Sherwood, Branch Co., Mich. in 1840.]
The twelve children of Joseph listed on this typed page are: Jesse, Abner, Hamilton, Frederick, William, Philander, Libbeus Eggerton, Joseph, Cortland, Martha, Georgiana, and Marcia. This list has almost nothing in common with that in the published book on p. 285 as children of Joseph Olds (1769 - 1822), "possibly son of Abner, son of Robert". It is, however, the same as the list of children on p. 307 assigned to ----- Olds of Batavia, N. Y. and called the line of Dr. E. M. Olds, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.11 The typescript is not dated but appears to be part of Edson Olds' continuing effort to update the book. Thus it appears that E. B. Olds had a Joseph Olds (although recorded as Stephen), born 26 April 1769 to Abner and that he could not definitely carry Joseph forward. In his appendix on "Unconnected Lines" he introduced records of a Joseph Olds who might have been Abner's son and also of a ------ Olds, ancestor of Dr. E. M. Olds. Then, at some time later, Edson Olds further assembled the family of Abner Olds, this time making Abner's son, Joseph, the same as the ------ Olds in the line of Dr. E. M. Olds.12
Joseph Olds appeared on the census of 1820 at Hartland, Niagara County, New York, as follows:
Joseph Olds, 2 m. 10-16, 1 m. 16-18, 5 m. 16-26, 1 m. 45 and up, 1 f. under 10, 1 f. 16-26. 1 f. 45 and up.13

"OLDS, Joseph, lawyer, was born in Circleville, Pickaway county, O., Apr. 15, 1832; son of Edson Baldwin and Anna Maria (Carolus) Olds. ... Joseph Olds was educated by private instruction at home, until he entered the freshman class at Yale college in September, 1849. He was graduated from Yale with high honors in 1853. He then studied law for a year at Circleville with his uncle, Chauncey N. Olds... Joseph Olds, the younger, in September, 1854, entered the Harvard law school in Cambridge, Mass., where he was graduated, and received the degree of LL. B in 1856. He was admitted to the bar by the district court at Chillicothe, O., the same year. In 1857 he was elected prosecuting attorney of Pickaway county, and served two terms. He afterwards practiced law with Jonathan Renick, of Circleville, until the death of Mr. Renick in 1863, and then alone until May, 1868. He had a large practice in Pickaway and adjoining counties. In April, 1868, he was elected in Pickaway, Franklin and Madison counties a judge of the fifth judicial district of Ohio, and served as such from May, 1868, to May, 1873. During his term of office he held all the courts of common pleas in Pickaway and Madison counties, held court in Columbus about five months in each year, and attended all the sessions of the district court in the nine counties of the district. He resided at Circleville until May, 1878. and then changed his residence to Columbus and re-entered the practice of law in partnership with Richard A. Harrison. He has ever since resided in Columbus, and practiced law with Judge Harrison, as a member of the successive firms of Harrison & Olds, Harrison, Olds & Marsh, and Harrison, Olds & Henderson. Their practice in important litigation, involving large amounts of money or property, in the federal and state courts, has been of the most extensive character. Judge Olds is devoted to his profession. He has always been a stanch and pronounced democrat, but has not, since he left the bench, desired public office of any kind, and has repeatedly declined to accept office. Judge Olds was married at Circleville on Dec. 18, 1866, to Mary Anderson, of Pickaway county. She was born at Glen Mary, near Chillicothe. O., on Nov. 5, 1846. She is the daughter of William Marshall and Eliza (McArthur) Anderson. ... Judge Olds had two brothers, Mark L. Olds, who was older, and Edson Denny Olds, who was younger than he. ... Judge and Mrs. Olds have six children—four daughters and two sons.4

Joseph Olds was born in 1820 at Batavia, New York.1 He was the son of Joseph (Branch Co. (Mich) pioneer) Olds.1 Joseph Olds married Lydia A. Craft c 1865.1,2 Joseph Olds died on 5 Jan 1895.3,4 He was buried at Riverside Cemetery, Union City, Branch County, Michigan.3
A record on a photo copy of the Branch County, Michigan, state return of deaths for the quarter ending 31 Dec 1895 directly contradicts my proposal for the parentage of this man. The record shows that Joseph Olds, a married white male, died of heart disease 6 Jan 1895 in Union, Michigan, at the age of 73 years, 1 month and 12 days. He was a farmer, born in New York, son of Philander and Cynthia Olds, residents of Michigan.5 "living in Union, Branch Co., Mich. in 1850". added in pencil: "children, Charles b. 1856."1
Joseph Olds appeared on the census of 9 Aug 1860 at Union City, Branch County, Michigan, as follows:
Joseph Olds, 42, farmer, b. N. Y.
Lydia Ann " , 31, b. do[ditto]
Charles " , 10, b. Mich.6
Joseph Olds appeared on the census of 24 Jul 1870 at Union, Branch County, Michigan, as follows:
Olds, Joseph, 50, farmer, b. N. Y.
, Lydia, 42, keeping house, b. N. Y.
, Charles, 19, works on farm, b. Mich.7
"Joseph Olds is one of the land marks of time that mark the progress of events in his township toward the improvement of which he has done much. He is 60 years of age and was born in Genessee county, N. Y., where he lived fourteen years, then came to this town where he has since remained. His father and mother are dead, but he has worked his own way satisfactorily to himself and in such a manner as to comand the respect of his neighhbors and friends. His people first settled on the Union City and Coldwater road, at which time there were but two families living between Orangeville and Union City -- Peter Blazer and Lloyd H. Simms. Thirty-five years ago he was married to Miss Lydia Ann Craft. She is 51 years of age and her motherly heart has never been gratified by the experience of maternal love, but she has reared a number of children who owed their parentage to some one else. Mrs. Olds came to the country when she was only eight years old, and her father, Adolph Craft, lived for many years in the vicinity of Coldwater. He was a cooper by trade, and died fourteen years ago last fall."8
"The near proximity of the county fair reminds us that Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Olds attended the first county fair forty years ago. They were accompanied by a load of friends and drawn by a pair of milk white oxen which also drew first premium. Mr. Olds has attended every Branch county fair. Mrs. Olds has missed two, once when she was in Chicago visiting and once when she was ill. They have entered articles in nearly all classes, horses, cows, farm produce[,] household and dairy procucts and fancy work at which Mrs. Olds is an adept, and every time they have received premiums."9
His obituary states:
"Joseph Olds, one of the pioneers of Branch county, died Jan. 5th at the home of his niece, Mrs. Josephine Brooks. He had been sick for several months with kidney trouble, but he seemed to be better and went to Mrs. Brooks' to spend Christmas, but was taken worse and was unable to return to his home, where he has lived for more that forty years. The funeral services were held at the residence of Mrs. Brooks, Rev. Mills of Union City officiating. Mr. Olds genial, kindly presence will be missed and the sympathy of many friends is extended to his wife."4

Marriage banns for him and Hannah Billings were published on 18 Aug 1758.1,2 His estate was probated in 1760 at Worcester County, Massachusetts. His last place of residence is listed as Brookfield.3 Joseph Olds died on 10 Oct 1760 at Brookfield, Worcester County, Massachusetts.4,5
It is tempting to identify this Joseph Olds of Brookfield with the only "lost" Joseph Old(s) currently in my database this early. That is Joseph Old, son of the immigrant Robert, born 170[?]. However, it seems unlikely that he would have waited until 1758 to marry and start a family. Chronologically, the current Joseph fits better as a grandson (or even great-grandson) of the immigrant Robert. William Old (also a son of Robert) raised a large family in Brookfield and no Joseph has yet been included among his children.
The Whitney Research Group (wiki.whitneygen.org/wrg) has posted information on Hannah Billing (1736 - a1763) and state that her first husband was "Joseph Old(s) 'of Brookfield', son of William and Elizabeth (Walker) Olds. He was born 23 May 1720, North Brookfield, MA, and died 10 Oct 1760, Brookfield, MA." This birth is, however, listed as Josiah Olds in the published VR of North Brookfield. There is also a 1778 Worcester County guardianship record under the name Joseph Olds and another in 1784.6

Joseph (Branch Co. (Mich) pioneer) Olds
M, ( - 1846)
Last Edited | 25 May 2021 |
Joseph (Branch Co. (Mich) pioneer) Olds died in 1846 at Union Township, Branch County, Michigan.1
Two men named Joseph Olds, born 26 Apr 1769, are included in the E. B. Olds Genealogy.
One is Joseph Olds, son of Benjamin and Via (Smith) Olds, born at Granville, Massachusetts.2 His birth date is confirmed by the Vital Records of Granville.3 and by a photograph of his gravestone in the Lithopolis Cemetery, Lithopolis, Ohio, where he was buried in 1844. His wife, Sally Whitney, died in 1840. He was the great-grandfather of the author of the Olds genealogy which, in my opinion, enhances the probability that he has been correctly identified.
The other is Joseph Olds, born 26 Apr 1769, son of Abner and Mary (Snow) Old.4 However, the published Vital Records of Brookfield, Massachusetts show the birth of Stephen (not Joseph), son of Abner and Mary Old, on 26 April 1769. Could Stephen have been a twin? Is this in an error in the record or in the transcription? No further information is given in the body of the Olds genealogy, but on p. 285 is a Joseph Olds "possibly the son of Abner, son of Robert." He is identified, although not conclusively, as the Joseph Olds (1769 - Sep. 11, 1822) who is buried in Niagara County, New York.
Both of these men are included elsewhere in my database. Another Joseph Olds, also a candidate to be the son of Abner, is investigated here.
E. M. Olds, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.5 The typescript is not dated but appears to be part of Edson Olds' continuing effort to update the book. E. M. Olds.6
Joseph moved to Genessee County, New York, while his son Frederick was still a baby "and bought ninety acres of new land on the Towanda Creek flats in the town of Alexander. He was drafted in the war of 1812, and was in several engagements, in one of which he received a wound in the leg. After the war he returned to his farm, which he partly improved. Afterwards he was engaged in the hotel business, but subsequently sold his hotel and worked at the cooper's trade. In 1836 he came to Michigan and settled in the town of Union, Branch Co., where he resided until his death, in 1846."1
The following newspaper account might apply here and could be used to help explain the absence of information on Olds children in the period between 1808 and 1820,
"The house of Mr. Joseph Olds of the town of Batavia, Genessee coun. (N, Y. [sic] was consumed by fire, on the 5th ult. Mr. and Mrs. Olds were absent at the time; and melancholy to relate, two infant children, left in bed, were lost in the flames, after making some exertions to escape, which was apparent from the circumstance that the bodies of these two innocents left by their parents in one bed were found in different corners of the room."7
An insolvent Joseiph Olds was schediuled before John H. Jones, frist Judge in Leicester, Genessee County, New York on 17 Sept 1817.8
Branch County, Michigan, was formed in 1829 (but no federal census until 1840) from St. Joseph County which had been formed in 1828 from Indian lands.
A Joseph Olds of St. Joseph County, Michigan, appears on an 1829 list of petitioners.9 Ezra and Joseph Olds are listed consecutively in the 1830 census of White Pigeon Township, St. Joseph County, Michigan Territory.
Ezra Olds, 1 male under 5, 1 male 5-10, 1 male 30-40, 1 female under 5, 1 female 40-50.
Joseph Olds, 1 male under 5, 1 male 40-50, 2 f. under 5, 3 f. 5-10, 3 f. 10-15, 1 f. 30-40.
An "Obd?" or "Obl" Olds is listed in Sherman Township with 1 male age 20-30 and 1 female age 20-30.
These records make it appear that a Joseph Olds, b. 1769, has not yet appeared in Michigan in 1830.10
A possible Joseph Olds of this age is found in Batavia, Genessee County, New York, in 1830 as follows: 1 male 5-10, 2 males 10-15, 1 male 20-30, 1 male 30-40, 1 male 60-70, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 15-20, 1 female 50-60
It is, of course, not certain that the oldest male was named Joseph Olds.11
A possible Joseph Olds of this age appeared on the census enumeration of 1840 at Sherwood Township, Branch County, Michigan, as follows:
1 male 5-10, 1 male 15-20, 1 male 20-30, 1 male 30 - 40, 1 male 40-50, 1 male 70-80
1 female 10-15, 1 female 60-70
It is, of course, not certain that the oldest male was named Joseph Olds..12
According to the death records of their sons William, Frederick and Philander Olds, the wife of Joseph Olds was Polly.13
E. M. Olds, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.5 The typescript is not dated but appears to be part of Edson Olds' continuing effort to update the book. Thus it appears that E. B. Olds had a Joseph Olds (although recorded as Stephen), born 26 April 1769 to Abner and that he could not definitely carry Joseph forward. Joseph Chauncey Olds was born on 9 Aug 1830 at Bennington, Vermont.1 He was the son of William Ross Olds and Barbara Pratt.1 Joseph Chauncey Olds married (1) Mary Emeline Morgan on 1 Jan 1852 at Bennington, Vermont.2 Joseph Chauncey Olds married (2) Sarah M. Morgan on 31 Jan 1857.3,4,5 Joseph Chauncey Olds died on 1 Feb 1896 at Valley Falls, New York, at age 65.2 He was buried at Bennington Village Cemetery, Bennington, Bennington County, Vermont.6
"He spent most of his life in Valley Falls, N. Y., where he was President of the Shaghticoke Powder Co., was President of the Board of Education, and was always interested in all that made for the improvement of that town. He was an earnest Christian gentleman, greatly loved by all for his generosity and kindly hospitality."7 He left a will on 25 May 1891. He was of Pittstown, Renssalear County, New York. This will was probated on 27 March 1896 in the Surrogate Court of Renssalaer County, New York. It gave his wife a life interest in his real estate which was later to go to his daughter, Mary E. Church. His personal estate went to his wife except for $1000 given to his grandson John Chauncey Jermyn, reserved if necessary until the grandson reached age 21.8
His obituary states: "Unidentified Newsclipping - 1896
OLDS.--Chauncey J. Olds was born at Bennington, Vt., August 9, 1830, and died at his home in Valley Falls, New York, February 1, 1896. Mr. Olds removed to Valley Falls from Canada in 1863 and engaged in work for the Schaghticoke Powder Company, where his energy and perseverance brought promotion. At his death he held the position of President of the Schaghticoke Branch of the Lafland and Rand Powder Company. Brother Olds was a consistent and earnest Christian, and in his love and enthusiasm for the church had few equals. For twelve years he was the efficient Sunday school superintendent and for twenty years the trusted treasurer of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Valley Falls, and at his death held the positions of trustee, class leader, Sunday school teacher and steward. The pressure of business was intense, but it never kept him from the public service, the class meeting, or the prayer meeting. He was a man of large benevolence, always a leader in matters connected with his home church, and dealing out with a lavish hand to the outside undertakings of his denomination. He was expecially interested in the missionary work, and during his life gave a large amount for that cause. He was taken sick in New York City two weeks before his death, but sufficiently recovered to reach home January 25, thus spending the last week of his life with his family and apparently rapidly recovering. On February 1 he led in family devotions and was about during the day until three o'clock, when suddenly the end came, and the pure spirit of him we have all loved went home. His wife and daughter survive. He was buried at Bennington, Vt.
