William Old was born on 28 Aug 1680 at Suffield, (in Mass. 1670 - 1749), now Connecticut.1 He was the son of Robert Old and Susannah Hanford.1 William Old married Elizabeth Walker on 11 Dec 1707 at Suffield, (in Mass. 1670 - 1749), now Connecticut.2,3 William Old died on 21 Sep 1749 at North Brookfield, Worcester County, Massachusetts, at age 69.4,5,6 He was buried at Brookfield Cemetery, Brookfield, Worcester County, Massachusetts.7
Indian raids were still a concern in and around Brookfield in the early part of the 18th century. At Brookfield, 30 Oct 1706, William Old was one of nineteen soldiers who signed a petition requesting a continuing grant of funds "toward maintaining a Minister to preach the Gospel in this place". Nineteen inhabitants also signed. "Several of the above marked Inhabitants, were doing duty as garrison soldiers; and several of the Soldiers were then or soon after became Inhabitants. £20 was granted and paid to Col. Partridge, for Mr. Wm. Grosvenor."8
"Since the winter of 1704-5, a considerable number of the inhabitants had been kept in the employ of the Province, as "standing guards," or garrison soldiers; and other young men who were stationed here as soldiers, had resolved to become inhabitants. To insure this result, and to hold out inducements to the sons of the first planters to remain, the Committee, at the meeting held Mar. 8, 1710, granted to Sergt. John White, 42 acres of upland and 20 of meadow, "provided he live in the place four years after he is wholly disbanded, and pay rates." Granted to Lieut. Samuel Williams, 50 acres of upland and 25 of meadow, "provided he settle on it and live in Brookfield four years." Stephen Jennings, Jr., received a similar grant. Joshua Barrus (Barrows) received 70 acres. The following received grants of 40 acres of upland and 20 of meadow, on the terms above-named: Edw. Walker, Jr., Jona. Jennings, Joseph Perry, William Old, John Hinds (from Lancaster), John and Samuel Gilbert (provided they live there 4 years after they come of age), Henry Peters and Joseph Kellogg, Edward Kellogg's son. Samuel Barns received 80 acres "at Mattchuck ; " Thos. Gilbert, 20 acres; John Woolcott, 22 acres."9
The conflicts between the colonists and the Indians were a part of Queen Anne's War which was settled by a truce in 1712 and the peace treaty of Utrecht in 1713 but were also part of a much longer conflict between England and France.8
He had a grant of sixty acres in Brookfield, 1710, and in all two hundred and sixty acres.10 On 22 Nov 1715, William Old was one member of a committee to oversee the building of a meeting house for worship. A rate [i. e. tax] and a requirement for labor on the new building were ordered.11 On 22 Apr 1717, as a landholder of Brookfield, William Old was taxed 1£ 4 s 6 p for the purpose of paying the minister, costs of the meeting house and other necessary charges.12
He was Captain at the Siege of Lewisburg in Queen Anne's War, 1747, and lived in North Brookfield, Massachusetts, on the south side of the river near Mason's brook.13 "Edward Smith of B. enlisted for this expedition. 'Capt. Wm Old impressed Seth Banister's gun, worth 7 pounds, for the use of the above named E. S., who never returned —and the Commissary is ordered to deliver sd Banister a gun out of the Province store.14'
"The direct ancestor of the Erie county Olds families was Captain William Old, the sixth son of Robert Old, who lived in Brookfield, Massachusetts, where he was the first to organize and establish the public school system in that town, and the first public school was held in his home. Captain William Old took active part in the famous Cape Breton expedition in Queen Anne's war 1746-1747. The siege and capture of Louisburg, by this expedition was reckoned one of the most notable military events in history."15 The will of William Old of Brookfield, Massachusetts, was probated 10 May 1751. His widow was Elizabeth and he named his eldest son William, other sons Comfort, Ezekiel, Ruben (Reuben) and Joseph[sic] and his daughters Elizabeth, wife of Uriah Gilbert, Hannah, wife of Moses Barns, Abigail, wife of Jonathan Gilbert and Deborah, wife of Aaron Barns.16

William Old was born on 8 Sep 1714 at Brookfield, Worcester County, Massachusetts.1,2 He was the son of William Old and Elizabeth Walker.1 William Old married Damaris Gilbert on 16 Feb 1738.3,4,5 His estate was probated in 1794 at Brookfield, Worcester County, Massachusetts.6
William was a sergeant in the French and Indian War in 1757.3
On 9 Aug 1757, Capt. Jabez Upham's Company of militia marched out to help with the defense of Fort William Henry at the lower end of Lake George in New York. The roster included Sergt. William Old, Corp. Ezekiel Old, Comfort Old, and Reuben Old. These four were probably sons of the deceased Capt. William Old. The company arrived after the fall of Ft. Henry and were only out 17 days.7
By his age, he approximately matches a death notice published 11 Nov 1794 in The Worcester Intelligencer: "DIED -- ... In this town, Mr. William Olds, aged 81. -- his disorder was dropsy, and had discharged a barrel of water, by tapping, within three or four months before he died. He left a widow aged 77; and has had ten children, seventy seven grandchildren, and thirty three great grandchildren." Note that by adding Moses to those listed in town births we have ten children for William.8
Pauline Nelson refers to William's will, "dated the day of his death" 25 Sep 1794 and probated 2 Dec 1794. She says it names his children and the spouses of his daughters. She lists his ten children, including the names whose births are recorded in the town records and adding Moses, "b. date unknown, d. Bet. April 17 - June 1830, Greenbush, ON, Canada".9
