Charles Austin Hornback was born on 1 Oct 1898 at Wayne County, Illinois. He was the son of James Hornback and Rena Hufford.2 Charles Austin Hornback married Irene Talley, daughter of Henry D. Talley and May Yager, c 1926.3,4
In an unidentified clipping of Parkersburg news: "Mrs. May Talley left Saturday of last week with her daughter, Prof. and Mrs. Charles Hornback of Eau Claire, Wisc. Her daughter and husband had visited here a few days before leaving. Mrs. Talley will spend the winter with them and another daughter Mr. and Mrs. (Verdine) Albert Moldenhauer in Stevensport, Wisc."
Another unidentified clipping is titled "Olney Native In Race For Congress" and reports that "Charles A. Hornback, former Olney grade school teacher, is the Republican candidate from the Eau Claire [Wisconsin] area. Hornback, who is a brother of Nolen Hornback of Olney, graduated from the Olney Township High School in 1920 and taught two years until 1922 at Central school. For more than 30 years he has been a professor of sociology in the State Teachers College at Eau Claire, Wis.
"His wife, the former Irene Talley, is a native of Parkersburg and former Olney teacher."
From these two articles I have adopted the spelling of Hornback rather than Hornbeck. Charles Austin Hornback registered with the World War I Selective Service System on 12 Sep 1918 at Olney, Richland County, Illinois. He described himself as living Olney, age 18, born 1 Oct 1899 [sic], and his occupation was student in Olney. He was tall in height, medium (mark is out of place) in build, with blue eyes and had dark hair. His closest relative was James A. Hornback of R. F. D. 1, Noble, Illinois.5

Hornbeck, Charles, age 32, first married at age 28
, Irene, age 26, first married at age 22

"He was a retired professor from Wisconsin, and a member of the Methodist Church.
"Survivors include two sons, Dr. Rex Hornback, Oregon; and Dr. Ned Hornback, Indianapolis; a brother, Nolan Hornback, Olney; and seven grandchildren."7
