Joseph Berry Duncan married (1) Maria Ann Odam.2,3 Joseph Berry Duncan was born on 27 Dec 1822.1 He married (2) Adaline Ayers b 1858.4 Joseph Berry Duncan died on 8 Feb 1905 at age 821 and was buried at on highway 250 north, Greenville, Greenville County, South Carolina.5,6
Joseph Berry Duncan and Maria Ann Duncan appeared on the census of 11 Oct 1850 at Greenville County, South Carolina, as follows:
     1203 Joseph Duncan, 28, laborer, b. S. C., can not read & write
      Maria , 24, b. S. C., can not read & write
      Jourdin , 8, b. S. C.
      Jane , 6, b. S. C.
      Martha , 4, b. S. C.
[next page]
      Lucritia, 2, b. S. C.7
Joseph Berry Duncan appeared on the census of 24 Aug 1860 at Milford, Greenville County, South Carolina, as follows:
612/610 Joseph Duncan, 37, farmer, $485 personal estate, b. S. C., cannot read and write
      Ealy , 30, b. S. C., cannot read and write
Jordan, 18, farmer, b S. C., attended school within the year
      Mary J., 16, weaver, b. S. C.
      Martha A., 14, b. S. C.
      Frances, 3, b. S. C.
      John W., 1, b. S. C.8
In order to properly assign the correct children to Maria, it is important to determine her death date. The 1850 census clearly names her but the “Ealy” of the 1860 census is not clearly either Maria or Adaline (Addie) and it is something of a stretch to read the entry as “Edy”. The 1857 death notice of one Marie Duncan says: “Departed this life in Spartanburg on the 9th inst., Mrs. Marie A. Duncan aged 23 years and 4 months”9. The Spartanburg Marie does not match Maria Odam Duncan well in either location or age. She was probably the same as the subject of this marriage notice: “Married on the 20th inst. at Granby, by the Rev. Mr. Gamewell, Mr. Jno. Duncan of Spartanburg, and Miss Maria Cayce of the former place”10. There may be no legible grave marker for Maria Odam Duncan. The report in the 1900 census that Joseph and Adaline had been married 60 years is an argument against there having been two wives but that is not credible, since “Adline” was only 68. The lack of a significant gap in the ages of the children also leaves it unclear that there were two wives.
The estate settlement of Andrew Odam first names his heirs (on 25 Aug 1862) as [his mother] Terry Odam, and his three sisters: Emily Duncan and Hezekiah Duncan; Maria Duncan and Joseph Duncan; and Manerva Singleton and Jesse Singleton. These families should have been known to the administrators and this implies that Maria Duncan was living. On 13 Mar 1863, the heirs of Maria Duncan were named as Mary Pitts and Drayton Pitts, Martha Duncan and Geo. B. Duncan. [Why no Jordan?] This makes it clear that Andrew’s sister Maria, wife of Joseph Duncan, was deceased by 13 March 1863 and that she was the mother of Mary Pitts, Martha Duncan and George B. Duncan. On 25 Nov 1865, Terry Odam [the children’s grandmother] reported to the court that Martha Duncan and George B. Duncan had no guardian and requested that Joseph Duncan be accepted. On 20 Mar 1867, the heirs were Mrs. Manerva [Verify -- should this be Terry? --DWO] Odam, H. Duncan and wife, Jesse Singleton and wife Manerva, D. J. Pitts and wife Mary, Martha Hudson [who had married Thomas Hudson in Dec 1866] and George Duncan.3 These court documents are not at hand as I write this and should be examined for additional detail or correction. Also, according to the family listing assembled below, Maria had one other child living in Mar 1863 and that was Confederate Soldier Jourdan Duncan who died in Jun 1863 in a Summerville hospital. Is he incorrectly claimed as a son of Maria? She was a very young mother, given the dates I am using. None of the younger children are named here, which supports their assignment to the second wife (Adaline) even though the same argument would apply to Jourdan Duncan, born ca. 1842. The 1900 census does show that Adaline had eight children.
Joseph Berry Duncan and Adaline Duncan appeared on the census of 5 Nov 1870 at Sandy Flat P. O., Oneal Township, Greenville County, South Carolina, as follows:

Joseph Berry Duncan appeared on the census of 22 Jun 1900 in the household of John W. Duncan and Louisa "Lou/Lue" Duncan at Oneal Township, Greenville County, South Carolina.13
His obituary states: "J B Duncan DEAD
"Joseph B Duncan died at his home in Piedmont on the evening of February 11. He was 83 years of age and had been gradually sinking for several years. A family of children survive, all of whom are grown. The funeral services and interment took place at Reedy River Baptist Church. Mr. Duncan was a veteran of the Civil War. He was respected by all who knew him and his death is regretted by a large circle of relatives and friends.
"The Greenville News Greenville, South Carolina."14
Letters of Administration were issued in Greenville County for his estate on 28 July 1906.15 There are many papers in this file naming and locating a long list of heirs. A notice to the heirs was apparently published in the Greenville Piedmont in July, 1907, but I could not read the copy of the clipping microfilmed with this estate file nor find a copy of the newspaper. However, Cynthia Duncan Bramlett has shared a photocopy of this notice as follows:
     “The State of South Carolina
     “Greenville County
     “In the Court of Probate

“In the matter of a final settlement of the estate of J. B. Duncan, deceased.

T. Hudson, E. L. Hudson, Baylis Hudson, Dock Hudson, Earnest Duncan, Lula P Duncan, Ollie May Duncan, and Marshall Earle Duncan, J. L. Duncan.
“You are hereby required to appear at a Court of Probate in the District for Greenville County in Greenville County at the Greenville Court House on the 24th day of August next, A. D. 1907, at 11 o'clock a.m., to show cause, if any of you have why a final settlement of the estate of J. B. Duncan, deceased, should not be had and a decree given thereon or your consent on failing to attend will be ordered of record.
“Witness, John T Bramlett, Judge of the Court of Probate for the County aforesaid, this 1st day of A. D. 1907 and in the one hundred and 11th [31] day[sic] of American Independence.

In default of such appointment, a guardian ad litem will be appointed on application of the petitioner.
“John T Bramlett, Judge of the Court of Probate for Greenville County”16.
The final settlement, with $580.20 to be distributed, was made 24 Aug 1907 and lists:
[first apparently listing eight surviving children]
     Francis J. McCoy     52.74
     J. W. Duncan          52.74
     W. S. Duncan          52.74

     J. A. Hudson          5.27
     H. T. Hudson     5.27 [elsewhere corrected to H. G. Hudson]
     T. R. Hudson          5.27

The heirs of Warren Duncan as follows:
     Earnest Duncan     13.185
     Ella P. Duncan     13.185 [also Lela P.]
     Ollie May Duncan      13.185
     Marshall Earle Duncan 13.185

Baylis Hudson & Dock Hudson were minors. Earnest Duncan, Ella P. Duncan, Ollie May Duncan & Marshall E. Duncan were also minors.
The amounts to the minors were too small to justify appointing guardians so Baylis and Dock Hudson were paid directly and the 52.74 due to the minors of Warren Duncan was paid to Mary R. Duncan, their mother.
B. F. Duncan asked $200 for waiting on and taking care of J. B. Duncan for one month during his last illness but the claim was withdrawn.

Baylis and Dock were the minor children of Martha Duncan, deceased. The minor children of Warren Hudson (sic) were residing with Mary R. Duncan.

A letter from E. L Hudson, Valley Fork Farm, Sunset, TX, 17 May 1906, to W. S. Duncan said
“You wanted to know the other boys post office

Hester Dunn

F, (22 Jul 1822 - 26 Aug 1898)
Relationship2nd great-grandmother of Daniel Wayne Olds
Last Edited10 Jan 2018
Hester Dunn was born on 22 Jul 1822 at Juniata County, Pennsylvania. She married Samuel Krimmel, son of John Krimmel and Elizabeth White, in 1847 at Pennsylvania. Hester Dunn died on 26 Aug 1898 at Bureau County, Illinois, at age 76. She was buried at Wyanet, Bureau County, Illinois.
No convincing links to Hester's parents have appeared before my inquiring eyes in the 65+ years I have known about her. In a new effort to identify Hester's antecedents, I have re-examined the census records of Mifflin and Juniata Counties. In 1820, when she would have been seven or eight years old, only two Dunn families had girls listed at that age. They were Alexander Dunn (age 30-39) and Samuel Dunn (age 40-49). Both are listed in Greenwood Township of Mifflin County. In 1840, Alexander (age 40-49) and Samuel (age 40-49) were again the only ones listing a girl of the right age. James Dunn (age 40-49 both times) is also listed Greenwood township, Mifflin County, then in Fayette Township of Juniata County, but he did not list a girl of Hester's age.
James Dunn (16 Dec 1789 - 12 Dec 1868), Samuel Dunn (27 Feb 1790 - 21 Mar 1867) and Sarah Dunn (4 Nov 1796 - 14 Jul 1879) are buried at Lost Creek Presbyterian Church in Juniata County (according to FindAGrave).
According to entries on RootsWeb (needing verification), Sarah was wife of Samuel Dunn and both James and Samuel were sons of Richard and Esther Dunn and both had served in the War of 1812. James also has a GAR marker at his grave and he is said to have had 9 children with three or four wives. The Lost Creek marriage records for 1806 - 1844, available online, show no Dunn or Krimmel/Crimmel.

"About 1780, Richard Dunn settled on the ridge south of McAlisterville, partly in Delaware and Fayette townships, which later he purchased and where he died. His sons were Thomas, William, Richard, James, Samuel and Alexander. Thomas settled at Middletown, below Harrisburg, as a miller. William and Samuel lived and died near the homestead. Richard settled in Thompsontown. James taught school and owned a farm, now owned by William Rannels, in Fayette township. William Dunn, a son of James, taught school in his younger days, became a surveyor, and is now justice of the peace in McAlisterville. Other sons of James settled in the vicinity." [History of that part of the Susquehanna and Juniata valleys, embraced in the counties of Mifflin, Juniata, Perry, Union and Snyder, in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania... Edited by F. Ellis and A. N. Hungerford. Published in Philadelphia by Everts, Peck & Richards, 188Pages 832-846 CHAPTER XVI. FAYETTE TOWNSHIP] Another list of Richard's sons, apparently from his 1815 estate papers gives them as John, William, Thomas, Joseph, Richard, James, Samuel and Alexandre. [PAMIFFLI-L mailing lsit]. I have also seen a Benjamin listed.

In July 2010 my autosomal Family Finder DNA test results from FamilyTreeDNA.com became available. Three of my current matches there (17 Feb 2012, 5th to remote cousins) have listed the DUNN name and the DNA segments they share with me they do not share with each other. One is Robert Samuel Dunn who lists Dunn of Pennsylvania. Also as a result of this test, I have been contacted by two other people about a Dunn connection. One is David Pacek, calculated as a 3rd - 5th cousin, but we have not established any connection. The other is Dave Dunn, whom I do not find among my matches, and correspondence with him has directed me toward the Richard and Ester Dunn, mentioned above. Robert Samuel Dunn, uncle of Dave, provided the sample for their work.
