Last Edited25 May 2024
David Chapman was born c 1872 at South Carolina. He was the son of Thomas John Chapman and Charlotte Smith.
David Chapman appeared on the census of 2 Jun 1880 in the household of George Berry Duncan and Cornelia Duncan.1
He was age 8 and brother-in-law of George B. Duncan. This makes him a brother of Caroline Chapman Duncan, George's wfe, and of Mary Chapman, George's sister-in-law, both listed here. This would make David a son of John Thomas and Charlotte Chapman, a very unlikely conclusion. John Thomas was not found after1860 and presumed dead by 1870 where he does not appear in the census with his family. Furthermore Charlotte would have been about 56 at David's birth and had no known children since 1859. He is more likely a grandson.
