Ruel Reed Olds was born on 3 Aug 1811 at Pompey, New York.1,4,2,5 He was the son of Timothy Olds.1,6 Ruel Reed Olds married Elmina Perkins on 17 Nov 1835 at Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.7,8 Ruel Reed Olds died on 11 Nov 1883 at Yamhill County, Oregon, at age 722,9 and was buried at Masonic Cemetery, Lafayette, Yamhill County, Oregon.2
"His parents moved to Huron County, Ohio, a little later and part of Ruel's boyhood was doubtless spent there. Both of his parents died when Ruel was about six years of age and for a number of years thereafter he may have lived with his older brother, Kingsley Olds, and possibly moved to Illinois in 1833, at the same time Kingsley Olds did. Ruel Olds worked on farms in Illinois, and learned brick-making, working at this trade in Chicago.
"On Nov. 17, 1835, at Chicago, Illinois, he married Elmina Perkins, who was born Jan. 23, 1817, in New York State."10
Ruel Reed Olds appeared on the census of 1840 at Laramie, Tippecanoe County, Indiana, as follows: "Ruel" Olds, 2 males under 2 males under 5, 1 male age 20-30, 1 f. 20-30.11
"There was another brother, Ruel Olds, who had formerly been a resident of Illinois but who in 1844 had moved out west and since that time the family had neard nothing from or concerning him and did not know where he had settled. The parents of Martin, Aaron, Abel and Ruel Olds had ten other children but so farm as known none of the others ever moved to Michigan and none of them came west with the Olds Emigrant Party."12
"Following their marriage Ruel Olds and his wife lived at Tippecanoe, Indiana, for several seven or eight years, their first three children being born there. In 1844 Ruel and his wife and these three children came out to Oregon, traveling with the emigrant party captained by Colonel Nathaniel Ford. This party was composed of several groups and the individual group with which Ruel and his family traveled was probably headed by Captain Black. James Clyman, an experienced western traveler, accompanied the party. In his diary which has been published in a book entitled "James Clyman = American Frontiersman," the name of Ruel Olds appears on two occasions, misspelled but easily identifiable.13 Clyman also records the names of Eli Perkins, Joel Perkins, and John Perkins as members of the party.
"The first winter in Oregon was spent by Ruel and his family at Oregon City. The next spring they moved to Champoeg. In May, 1845, Ruel Olds filed a homestead claim on a section of land in the Cheshalem Valley, a little distance north of the present town of Lafayette, Oregon. Eli Perkins, Ruel's father-in-law, took up an adjoining homestead. The homestead claim notice, in Ruel's handwriting and bearing his signature, and which was officially recorded at Oregon City on Nov. 12, 1845, is presently (1952) in possession of his granddaughter, Mrs. Emma Clouchek, 6028 S. E. Reed College Road, Portland, Oregon. Ruel Olds and his wife continued to live on this homestead for the rest of their lives.
"In addition to farming, Ruel operated a brick kiln and for many years the only bricks burned in Yamhill County were those which he manufactured.
"Ruel Olds died at Lafayette, Oregon, on Nov. 11, 1883. His wife, Elmina Perkins Olds, died at Lafayette on Aug. 11, 1885. Both are buried in the cemetery at Lafayette.
"Children of Ruel Reed Olds and Elmina Perkins Olds wre: Eli P. Olds; Nelson Harvey Olds; Elzina Olds; Emmitt Olds; Bruzilda Olds; May Olds; and D. Jay Olds."14
"His father [i.e. father of Emmitt Olds], Ruel Olds, was a native of New York and crossed the plains with ox teams in 1844, settling on a donation claim in Yamhill county. There he remained until his death in 1883. He married Elmina Perkins, also a native of New York, the wedding occurring in Chicago. The father's parents died when he was a lad and he grew up to manhood in Illinois. He did farm work there and also learned to make brick and wrought at that trade in Chicago for some years. Later, he established a brick manufactory in Yamhill county and burned the only brick made there for years."15
Ruel Olds of Yamhill County was born in New York, 1811 or 1812 and arrived in Oregon on 30 Feb 1845. He settled his claim on 15 March 1851. He married Elmira on 17 Oct or Nov 1835 in Illinois. Henry Tanner surveyed the claim. Supporting affidavits were signed by James E. Hays, James Johnson, Daniel Johnson and Abijah S. Hendricks.16
"Early Oregon history was recalled when the Perkins-Olds-Johnson clan gathered recently for a potluck dinner at Champoeg park on the Willamette.
"The clan members, 117 strong, gathered to celebrate the 110th year in Oregon of descendants of Eli and Sally Hull Perkins, pioneers of 1844, who settled in Yamhill valley.
"They came by way of the Old Oregon Trail and the descendants are now in the eighth and ninth generations. There are about 1500 direct descendants with nearly 1100 now living, mostly in Oregon, Washington, Idaho and California. ...
"Ruel Olds was an early Yamhill county treasurer. He, Eli Perkins and James Johnson once owned all the land between Carlton and Yamhill. Martin Olds was a member of the Oregon legislature and was the second Yamhill county judge. His son, James returned east in 1851 and captained a wagon train of 500 families from Ohio and Michigan to Oregon.
"Peter P. Olds, grandson of Martin, was a member of the legislature, justice of peace in McMinnville, and was the second grower of hops in the Willamete valley. ...
