Levi Olds was born on 8 Jan 1751 at Brookfield, Worcester County, Massachusetts.2 He was the son of Comfort Old and Abigail Barns.1 Levi Olds married Sabra Archer, daughter of Thomas Archer and Azubah Old, on 15 Nov 1775 at Suffield, Hartford County, Connecticut.3 Levi Olds died on 26 Nov 1827 at Cummington, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, at age 76.4
He was in the Revolutionary War in 1778 from Brookfield, Worcester County, Massachusetts.5
Levi Olds should be the head of a family in 1790 and he may be the Levi Old in Goshen, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, with one male 16 and over, 3 males under 16, and 3 females. There are no others listed in 1790 and available records of the family currently supply no others old enough to match this listing. The record, however, has too few males to fill the 1800 listing.6
In 1800 the only Olds family listed in Cummington, Massachusetts was that of Levi Olds. The information from the census listings provides the basis for the following outline and leaves open the option for more children in the family of Levi and Sabra Olds.
1800 1810 1820
1 male under 10 [Zenas] 1 male 10-15 [Zenas]
3 males 10-15 [Rufus, Levi and ??] 1 male 45 &up [Levi] 1 male 45 &up[Levi]
2 males 16-25 [Nathaniel and ?? ] 1 female 16-25 [Lucy]
1 male 45 &up [Levi] 1 female 45 &up [Sabra] 1 female 45 &up[Sabra]
1 female 10-15 [Lucy]
1 female 16-25 [Olive]
1 female 26-44 [Sabra]
Not until 1820 did other Olds families appear in the Cummington census. These were for Levi, Jr., Nath[aniel] and Zenas Olds. Rufus was in Goshen. Only Nathaniel and Rufus are listed in Cummington in 1830, neither having an elderly woman in the household. However, Eliphalet Packard, who was age 40-50, with wife age 40-50, had a female age 70-80 in the household. Perhaps this was Sabra.

"UNKNOWN HEIRS OF A FARM
"The Heirs to Half a Pittsfield Farm Unknown
"To Determine Owners
"And Divide Estate of Levi E. Olds Who Died Twenty Years Ago Suit is Brought.
. . . "The property sought to be partitioned is 80 acres in Pittsfield belonging to the estate of Levi E. Olds who died May 31, 1884, without children, and whose wife, Kate F. Olds7, has been in possession of the estate until her death last December. The heirs of Levi E. Olds are set forth to be as follows:
"The children of a brother, George H. Olds, deceased, viz.: Jennie M. Wilkinson, Anna C. Reed, George H. Olds, Ella S. Rogers, Albert L. Olds and Lewis M. Olds.
"A sister --- Sarah Hinckley
"The widow, Kate F. Olds, now deceased.
"The children of a sister, Almira Olds, deceased, viz.: Harriet Badger, Jane Morton [probably Martin], Freedom Chase and Liberty Chase. The bill sets forth that it is not known whether these heirs are living except that it has been heard that Freedom Chase is dead, leaving one child, Parsons Chase, surviving.
"The grandchildren of a brother, Halsey Olds, deceased, viz.: Eliza Stevens, daughter of Eliza Ann Stevens, deceased. The whereabout of this heir is unknown.
"The bill sets forth an inability to determine whether or not the heirs of Almira Olds and Halsey Olds are in existence and whether the property should de divided into four equal parts or two. If the unknown heirs of the brother, Halsey, and sister, Almira, are to be recognized, then Mrs. Hinckley, the sister, will get one-fourth of the estate and each of the children of George S.[sic] Olds wll get one-twenty-fourth of the estate. If they are not to be recognized, then Mrs. Hinckley will get half and each of the other six heirs one-twelfth.
"To further complicate the case, one of the heirs is in an insane asylum and a guardian is asked to look after her interests.
"It is further stated that since the death of the wife of Levi E Olds last December, her second husband, George Inman, has refused to vacate the premises and is cutting off the timber.
"It also states that there was $132.56 deposited with the county treasurer in 1894 to the credit of Eliza Ann Stephens, an unknown heir, and asks that this amount with interest be distributed among the other heirs.
"The suit in partition was brought by Mrs. Jennie M. Wilkinson, Mrs. Annie C. Reed and George H. Olds, through Wm. B. Hatch, attorney."8
On 4 March 1904 the newspaper Michigan Argus published several court documents from a case brought by Ida Stevens as an heir of Levi E. Olds. Her petition set forth the case that Ida Stephens was over twenty-one years old, a resident of Mt. Morris, Genesee County, Michigan, and the only child of Eliza Stephens and J. C. C. Stephens. Further, Eliza was a daughter of Halsey Olds, deceased; Halsey Olds, deceased, was a brother of Levi E. Olds, deceased; that the said Levi E. Olds died on the thirty-first day of March, A. D. 1884, and that the said Eliza Stephens died in the Asylum for the Insane at Pontiac, Michigan, in the month of July, 1893.
Levi E. Olds had died on 31 March 1884 and had left real and personal property in Pittsfield, Washtenaw County, Michigan. His estate was closed on 27 June 1894 and the administrator discharged. Eliza Stephens could not be located and her share ($132.56) was left on account with the Washtenaw County Treasurer. Ida Stephens, as the only heir of her mother Eliza, was petitioning the court to give her the balance of this fund. The other heirs, through their representatives, all agreed and they are here named as:
Ida Stephens, George H. Olds, Jennie M. Wilkinson, and William Campbell, administrator of the estate of Anna G. Reed, deceased, all represented by William B. Hatch
Albert L. Olds and Lewis M. Olds, represented by John P. Kirk
Jane Olds Murray by Cavanaugh & Wedeneyer

Chase, Benjamin Martin, Melissa Kerr, Minnie McGlogan, Mary J. Sisson, Jennie Martin Taft, Harriet Badger, Jane Martin, and William Campbell, as guardian for the estate of Elva S. Rogers, an incompetent, the remaining heirs of the said Levi Olds, deceased, all represented by D. C. Griffin
(Ann Arbor, 24 July 1903.)
The funds could not be located in the county treasurer's office and Ida pleaded her case of poverty and the care of her elderly father before the Board of Supervisors. She won the payment.9

Lewis Olds was born on 5 Jun 1822 at Sturbridge, Massachusetts.1,2 He was the son of Cheney Olds and Amma Walker.1,2 Lewis Olds died on 22 Feb 1894 at age 71.1
"unmarried; moved to Yale [sic -- Yolo] Co., Cal., in 1850."1 He "... , a Yolo County farmer, was born June 5, 1822, in Worcester County, Massachusetts, a son of Cheney and Anna (Walker) Olds, natives of Massachusetts. The father, a farmer and shoemaker, was a soldier in the war of 1812 and received a pension from the Government. He was a pioneer settler in Illinois, in 1836, in Whiteside County, where he lived until his death in 1874; his wife survived until 1883. They had six sons and three daughters. Lewis was raised on a farm, and when of age he engaged in lead-mining in Wisconsin for several years. In 1850 he came across plain and mountain to California with horse teams, the trip occupying four months. He arrived at Hangtown and commenced mining at Coloma. In the fall he went down in the valley to sell some stock, and he also killed some animals and elk. Late in that season he went to San Jose and spent the winter. In the spring of 1851 he was a short time in San Francisco, and then spent three years in the mines at Yankee Jim’s and Michigan Bluff, with moderate success. In 1854 he settled upon his present property, six miles from Woodland, which he obtained from the Government by pre-emption, and on this he made all the improvements now existing there. The place consists of 160 acres, and he carries on general farming and stock-raising."3
