Charles A. Duncan married Henrietta Ridgely, daughter of William Henry Ridgely and Hannah Reed Simmons, on 29 Mar 1860 at Wabash County, Illinois. Helen Reed1 reports that the Orio church records list the marriage of Henrietta Ridgely to a Duncan without first name or date. The memory of this Duncan appears to have been lost in our family and Henrietta again used the name Ridgely when she re-married.2
Charles A. Duncan and Henrietta Duncan appeared on the census of 1860 at Bonpas Township, Richland County, Illinois, in which the record shows that they had been married within the year. He was age 29 and she was 27. He is probably the Charles Duncan, age 19, b. OH, listed in the family of Alexander Duncan, age 60, b. PA, and Catherine Duncan, age 46, b. Ireland (1850 census, Richland County, Illinois).3 One Charles A. Duncan served in Company A of the 123rd Illinois infantry during the Civil War. His residence was Charleston, Coles County, Illinois. He is not on the Illinois Civil War Pension list. He held the rank of 1st Seargent. (http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/regiments.htm)
He was a native of Westfield, IL, a bookkeeper, single, age 21, 6' 2-1/2" tall, with light complexion, blue eyes and brown hair. He joined 1 Aug 1862 at Charleston, IL, for a period of three years, and was mustered in on 6 Sep 1862 at Matoon, IL. He died 19 Apr 1862 at Murfreesboro, TN, of disease. (http://www.ilsos.gov/genealogy/CivilWarController as of 2 Feb 2006)
Although this soldier might have been Henrietta's husband before he enlisted, there is an 18 year-old Charles A. Duncan listed in the 1860 census of Westfield in the family of Coleman S. Duncan, age 57, born in KY.4
