Edward Smith left a will on 17 Apr 1815 at Spartanburg District, South Carolina. "L. W. T. of Edward Smith of Dist. of Spartanburg, rec. 15 Aug 1814 [sic]; to wife Salley during her widowhood, all my real & personal property; at her decease to be divided among my seven children Charles Smith, Holman Smith, my son in law John Lipscomb, David Lipscomb, Richard Simmons, Reuben Smith and John Willis, requesting my two sons to be liberal to my three daughters Betsey, Frances & Patsey; to son in law William Burton, s5; to my son Thomas Smth s5, to the heirs of my son William Smith s5, sons Charles & Holman Smith, Exrs; 17 Apr 1815; Edward Smith (Seal), Wit: William Smith, Moses Waters, Betsey Waters. Proven by William Smith (not dated). The executors requested one month of deliberation on qualifications which was granted them. W. Lancaster O. S. D."2
On 3 July 1815, Holman Smith was granted a citation in the Spartanburg County Court of the Ordinary to prove the will of Edward Smith, deceased. On 22 July 1816 Holman was qualified as executor of Edward's will.3 "4 June 1817. Settlement of estate of Edward Smith . . . seven legatees."4

Ellis E. Smith married Rosie Schoolcrest at Reno, Washoe County, Nevada.2,3 Ellis E. Smith was born on 13 Feb 1913.4,5 He was the son of Ross Cleveland Smith and Metta Mildred Ensor.1 Ellis E. Smith died on 8 Oct 1963 at Richland Memorial Hospita1, Olney, Richland County, Illinois, at age 50.5,6 He was buried at Oak Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg, Richland County, Illinois.7
His obituary states:
"Ellis E. Smith, age 49, a resident of 711 W. Chestnut street, passed away very suddenly this morning in the emergency room of the Richland Memorial Hospital where he was taken following an apparent heart attack at his home.
"Mr. Smith was born in Parkersburg the son of Ross Smith and Metta Ensor Smith. He had lived in the county all his life.
"He was employed as a driller for the Zanetis Oil Properties of Olney for the last 11 years. He was a member of Olney Lodge No. 926, B. P. O. E; Olney Lodge No. 1372 of the Loyal Order of Moose and Olney Aerie No. 2549 Fraternal Order of Eagles.
"Mr. Smith leaves his wife, Rosie, owner and operator of the Welcome Inn on Route 130, a son, Captain Lanny Smith of Woodriver, Illinois; two step children, Jack Burnett of Linton, Indiana, and Mrs. Janice Wilson of Bloomington, Indiana. There are 3 grandchildren and 6 step grandchildren. He also leaves his mother, Mrs. Metta Smith of Parkersburg, two sisters and a brother, Mrs. Vivian Broeg of Parkersburg, William Albert Smith and Mrs. Leona Dean, both of Olney. His father, Ross Smith, passed away in 1943.
"Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time and will be announced later from the Summers-Rainey Funeral Home."8

Elsie Ann Smith married Martin Dean Rodgers, son of Moses I. Rodgers and Eliza J. West, on 6 Jun 1874 near Berry's Pond, Spartanburg County, South Carolina.1 Elsie Ann Smith died on 11 Oct 1935 at Reidville Township, Spartanburg County, South Carolina, at age 84.3 She was buried on 12 Oct 1935 at Wood's Chapel United Methodist Church, Spartanburg County, Virginia.2,4
She is named as Elsie Ann Smith Rodgers in obit of her daughter, Nettie Bragg.

Bright was of route 1, Duncan. A. L. Smith was of route 3, Wellford and J. R. Smith was of Tucapau. The funeral was held on Saturday.4

"I Holeman Smith of the district and State aforesaid being of Sound mind & memory but knowing according to nature that I Cannot live a great many years more -- Make & ordain this my Last will & Testament hereby revoking all other former Will or Wills that I may have made hertofore -- First I reccommend my Soul to almighty God who gave it. and my Body to the dust from whence it Came to be decently Burried at the discretion of my Executors-- hereinafter mentioned and for Such Worldly goods as it hath pleased God to blefs me With after my Just Debts and funeral expenses are paid I give and bequeath in manner and form following

The census enumeration of Spartanburg County, South Carolina, for 25 Oct 1850 listed Holman as follows:

On 28 May 1855 a coroner's inquest was held to investigate the death of Holeman Smith. It was convened by Davis Moon, a magistrate acting as coroner, at the late residence of Holman Smith. The finding was
"upon their oaths do say [deceased] was wilfully, maliciously, & feloniously murdered at his own residence … by Phillis and John, slaves of the deceased, by beating him with an Axe and a stick … and that Charley, a slave of dec's'd, was accessory to the murder being present and making no effort to prevent the murder".8
His obituary states:
"On Monday, last, 28th ult, Mr. Holman Smith, residing in the Eastern part of Spartanburg District, near Limestone Springs, was brutally murdered by two of his negros.
"A trial was held the next day, and the mother and son (not quite grown) sentenced to be hung on the 6th of July next. They are in jail awaiting execution."5
In response to a petition (D. D. Webber & wife vs Rice Smith and others) to probate the will, an order dated 25 June 1855 was directed to Elizabeth Smith, widow, Jacob A. Peugh and Lucy his wife, Rice Smith, Charles Paterson & Nancy his wife, Willis Smith, Edward Smith, Holeman R. Smith and Eldridge G. Littlejohn, Thomas M. Littlejohn, Mary E. Littlejohn and Samuel F. Littlejohn, minor children of Elizabeth Littlejohn, Decd, heirs and distributees at law of the Estate of Holeman Smith Decd. It required that they appear in the Court of Ordinary the next September 21st
On 13[?]th July 1855, an inventory of the estate of Holman Smith included $400 due from the state of South Carolina "for two Negroes hanged Phillis and John". The inventory also included an amount due from D. D. Weber and wife M. E. Weber "on a written contract for the hire of negro" This shows that they were married by this time.9

Iva Smith Duncan, 90, of 216 Raymond Road, Union, widow of Mack Daniel Duncan, died Friday, Feb. 3, 2006 at her home.
Mrs. Duncan was born in Newport, Tenn. Jan. 28, 1916, the daughter of the late Lawson Smith and Macie Gaddy Smith Duncan. She attended Calvary Christian Center.
Survivors are: two daughters, Louise Sprouse of Union and Ruth Estes and husband Donald of Sedalia; three sons, Raymond Duncan and wife Bessie, Ralph Duncan and wife Mary and Billy Joe Duncan, all of Union; a brother, Fred Smith of Washington State, 12 grandchildren, Eddie and Rhonda Duncan, Jimmy and Beth Hawkins, Gettys and Tammy Knox, Jill Duncan, Steve and Tina Lipsey, Jamie and Connie Smith, Wayne and Kaye Smith, Jimmy and Stephanie Estes, Donnie and Amanda Estes, Danny Brittin, David Brittin, Bobby and Angie Pristwood, Joe and Tanya Duncan; 22 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Duncan was predeceased by three sons, Jim Duncan, Terry Duncan and Bobby Duncan; two sisters, Mae Fallow and Margie Mooney; three brothers, Claude Smith, Clyde Smith and Luther Smith, and a great-grandchild, Nikki Nelson.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. today, Feb. 6, 2006, at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conduced by Pastor Ted Oldaker and Carol Oldaker. Burial was in Lower Fairforest Baptist Church Cemetery. Mrs. Duncan’s grandsons served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Donnie Estes and Eddie Duncan.
The family received friends Sunday at the funeral home.

James R. Smith married Sarah Elizabeth Robertson.1 James R. Smith was born on 31 Oct 1859 at Spartanburg County, South Carolina.1 He was the son of Daniel J. Smith and Sarah Ann Pearson. James R. Smith died on 13 Apr 1938 at Spartanburg County, South Carolina, at age 78.
His on-line death certificate is too difficult to read to be sure of his parents' names.2,3
His obituary states:
"An inquest into the death of James R. Smith, 82-year-old resident of the Tucapau mill village who died at the Mary Black Hospital here at 10:30 o'clock yesterday morning, will be conducted at 10 o'clock this morning at J. F. Floyd mortuary, county officers announced last night.
"Mr. Smith, who had lived in the Tucapau section since 1891, and who was one of the best-known residents of Spartanburg county, died of injuries suffered when he was struck by an automobile near his home on the night of Sunday, April 3.

"Funeral services for Mr. Smith will be conducted at 11:30 o'clock Friday morning at the Tucapau Methodist church by the Rev. D. W. Smith, and the Rev. B. S. Drennan, of Clinton. Interment will be in the Fairmont cemetery.
"The following grandsons will serve as active pallbearers: Claude Chandler, Wilbur Weir, Louis Smith, James Brannon, LeFoy Bright, and Paul Howell.
