Gilbert Olds was a soldier in the Revolutionary War.8
Gilbert Oldes "Private, Capt. John Spoor's co., Col. John Ashley's (Berkshire Co.) regt; entered service Sept. 19, 1777; discharged Oct. 19, 1777; service 31 days; company marched to Stillwater. Roll certified at Suffield by Brig. Gen. John Fellows."9
Gilbert Olds appeared on the census of 1810 at Washington County, Ohio, as follows: 10101-00010-00
This suggests that Gilbert was over age 44, that he had a wife age 26-45 and two males, one under ten and perhaps 16-26.10
Gilbert Olds appeared on the census of 1820 at Muskingum, Washington County, Ohio, as follows:
1 male under 10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male over 45.11
On 25 July 1820, at age 64, Gilbert Olds appeared before the Court of Common Pleas in Washington County, Ohio, to apply for a pension based on his Revolutionary Service under the Act of May 1820. He had enlisted for one year in December 1775 in Massachusetts under Capt. Asher Bartlett of Col. Ward's Regiment "in the line of the state of Massachusetts on the Continental Line". He served until 4 Feb 1777 and was discharged in New Jersey. He also mentions service in Capt. William Bacon's Company of Col. John Fellows' Regiment. He served in the Battle on Long Island. He submitted a short list of his property and debts to show that he had few resources. He was a shoemaker, but his eyes were failing. He named his wife Catherine, and Stephen, age 12 and not able to labor, and Labin, 6 years old. A more detailed statement had been filed on 4 May 1818 in which he was a resident of Roxbury township, Washington county, and said "I am now 63 years old since (that word has been struck) the 22nd day (that word has been struck) Instant." He was entered on the Ohio pension roll with a payment of $8/month in arrears from 4 May 1818.
This file included affidavits to his service from neighbors who had known him in Sheffield, Berkshire County, Massachusetts in 1775.
The file also contains an 1847 letter from Thaddeus Nott of Havana, Mason County, Illinois wanting to know if his widowed mother-in-law was due a pension based on the service of Gilbert Olds who had married her in 1821 (1827?) in Washington County, Ohio, lived there several years, and in 1830 (1831?) moved to Indiana ---??--- and died and his wife is still living ---??--- lost the certificate and cannot find it "but we can prove that she was married to this time day and date [sic] in Washington County, Ohio and the pension record will show that there was only one man of that name in the county or state that drawn[sic] a pension and this was him. Some time in 1835 was transferred to Eugene, Indiana. We can prove all those facts except what you will find in record ..... is there any chance for Catherine Olds to draw a pension ..."
The file also contains an official sheet summarizing the application and states that Gideon was born 22 May 1755, had enlisted from Sheffield, Massachusetts, and died in 1835. Also noted is "1827 could not have been date soldier's marriage as son Stephen was born in 1808.
In 1919, the pension office received an inquiry from Mrs. Ward Wisecarver of McMinnville, Oregon, about the service of her ancestor Gilbert Olds (for the D. A. R.) In addition to his enlistment from Sheffield, she stated that he later enlisted in Vermont as a Sergeant.5
Mrs. Wisecarver did become a D. A. R. Member ( Nat'l #: 151259) and her application papers show her qualifying line as: Robert M. Gilbert (1840 - 1919) and Sarah Jane Olds (1854 - 1874), married in 1871. Sarah Jane was a daughter of Reuben P. Olds (1819 - 1874) and Elizabeth Mays Shelley (1824 - 1872), married in 1853. Reuben P. Olds was the son of Marquis de Lafayette Olds (1792 - 1860) and Jane Campbell (1795 - 1852). Marquis was the son of Gilbert Olds (1755 - 1835) and Esther Noble (1760 - ) who died at Gorham, New York.12
Gilbert Olds appeared on the census of 1830 at Roxbury Towmship, Washington County, Ohio, as follows:
1 m 15-19, 1 m 20-29, 1 m. 70-79, 1 f. 40-50
[The next family listed is that of Thaddeus Nott.].13

Educator, minister Glenn A. Olds dies: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice
"For Glenn A. Olds, it was never about reserving enough energy for later. The time to live was always now.
"And though family members were saddened when the part-time boxer, Kent State University president, ordained Methodist minister and diplomat died Saturday at age 85 in his Sherwood home, they acknowledged that Olds lived a "full and complete life."
"He used every ounce of energy he had," said Olds' son, G. Richard Olds. "He left everything on the floor. He was a very courageous man who made a lot happen."
"Glenn Olds died after a long battle with heart and kidney diseases, his son said. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Portland.
"Olds was born Feb. 28, 1921, in Sherwood. His family moved around as his father was a professional boxer who also worked on timber farms.
"My grandfather was Jack Dempsey's sparring partner and got fired because he knocked Dempsey out," G. Richard Olds said. "So he raised two of his boys to be boxers."

"In 1968, he became the U.S. ambassador to the U.N. Economic and Social Council, resigning in 1971 to take the Kent State job.
"His time at Kent State began six months after four students were killed by National Guardsmen during anti-Vietnam War protests. Jim Watson, an attorney at the university who once was Olds' chauffeur as a graduate student, said Olds was known to mingle with students at rallies and sit-ins.
"He was the right president for the time," Watson said.
"Olds left Kent State six years later to reopen the then-bankrupt Alaska Methodist University in Anchorage. During a sabbatical, he won the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate in Alaska but lost to incumbent Republican Frank Murkowski in the general election.
"As college president in Alaska, he championed a drive to turn around the financially strapped private college in 10 years. He resigned in 1987.
"Mr. Olds then served as commissioner of commerce and natural resources for the governor of Alaska, resigning in 1993 at the age of 79.
"In addition to his wife, survivors include his daughter, Linda Olds; son, Dr. G. Richard Olds; and three grandchildren.
