Charity Louisa Bryant was born on 20 Dec 1805 at Cummington, Hampshire County, Massachusetts.1,2,3 She was the daughter of Peter Bryant and Sarah Snell. Charity Louisa Bryant married Justin Hixon Olds, son of Jonathan Olds and Lucy Wood, on 15 Jun 1837 at Princeton, Bureau County, Illinois.4 Charity Louisa Bryant died on 13 Dec 1867 at Princeton, Bureau County, Illinois, at age 615 and was buried at Oakland Cemetery, Princeton, Bureau County, Illinois.6
"When Louisa’s husband, Justin H. Olds, gave up storekccping in Princeton and purchased a farm on the south edge of the village of Greenfield (Lamoille after 1840), Mrs. Bryant wrote somewhat regretfully that 'Louisa wishes me to live with her.’'** But while Mrs. Bryant was visiting in the East, Olds returned to storekeeping in Princeton, and Mrs. Bryant came to the Olds home there, on the morning of October 22, 1843, just a few hours before Louisa gave birth to a son."7
On 3 Apr 1847, The Christian Citizen of Worcester, Massachusetts, published a list of names of Americans who had signed the pledge of the League of Universal Brotherhood, an organization dedicated to eliminating war. Names from Princeton, Illinois, include Louisa B. Olds.8
The death date on Charity's tombstone (13 Dec 1868) is incorrect. The birth records of Cummington, Massachusetts, show she was born 20 Dec 1805. Her tombstone gives her age at death as 61 yrs 11 mos 23 dys, giving her a calculated death date of 13 Dec 1867. I have examined the microfilmed Bureau County Republican for 1867 and 1868 and found no death notice for her. (There is a small clipping missing from the issue of 24 Dec 1868.)
A microfilmed issue of the New York Evening Post for 10 Feb 1868 contains the following:
"OLDS -- At Princeton, Illinois, on the 12th [or 13th?], December, Mrs. Charity Louisa Olds, wife of Justin H. Olds"9
A typed abstract of the same clipping gives the same information. The abstracts are recorded in daily, dated segments, and unlikely to be in the wrong year. Furthermore, an obituary of Justin H. Olds says his wife died 13 Dec 1867. Perhaps some family recording may also be found. I have entered her death date as 13 Dec 1867.
