Julia Louisa Olds was born on 7 Jul 1840 at Lamoille, Bureau County, Illinois.1,2 She was the daughter of Justin Hixon Olds and Charity Louisa Bryant. Julia Louisa Olds married James S. Barkman on 10 Feb 1886.3,4 Julia Louisa Olds died on 18 Feb 1891 at Peoria, Peoria County, Illinois, at age 505 and was buried at Oakland Cemetery, Princeton, Bureau County, Illinois.6,7
The following document is written in pencil on both sides of a single 8.5" by 11" sheet of lined paper. At the top by another hand, also in pencil, has been added: "We think this was written by grandfather Olds sister Julia Barkman". For this reason, I will file it with Julia.
                "A Visit to California
"I made a visit to California [in] 1870. At that time there were no railroads across the Great American Desert. We had to cross it in emigrant wagons. The heat was so intense we could scarcely breath[e]. But however we succeeded in reaching the other side safely and before many days we were in the state of California. My first impression of the scenery was that it was not so grand as I had expected to see But after I had been there a few days my opinion was decidedly changed in regard to it. Perhaps the reason I did not inenjoy[sic] so much at first was that I was so nearly tired out after our long journey that I could not take in the full benefit of it until after resting a couple of days at a large old building that was called an inn near Lake Manor after we were rested we started for San Franciso but made many stops in our journey so we could get the full benefit of the fruit groves and the immense trees. In one of our stops there were a party of young people out on a picnic and were dancing on a trunk of a large tree which had been cut and polished for that purpose. But I must now say something of the delicious fruits that grow in this state. The bananas oranges pears and grapes taste a great deal different there when they are ripe and fresh from the trees then [sic] they do after they have been shipped here. Because they have to be picked while they are green for shipment [If?] they were shipped when they were ripe they would decay before they reached here.
"We decided that the hard ware business must be very paying by selling knives if for nothing else . For on nearly every tree there are any amount of names carved from the most highly educated to the lowest class of people. Many of these trees have names, such as Dan Webster, Ab. Lincoln, Longfellow, and William Cullen Bryant.
We visited the gold mines while in this state which we enjoyed very much but we were not fortunate enough to run across any one so kind as to give us some of this gold ore. We also spent several days at the Yosemite valley, which is about 260 miles from San Francisco. It is situated in the center of the Sierre Nevada mts. It is about a mile in width 9 miles long. It is over toped[sic] by lofty hills and its boundaries are walls of beautiful granite.
"We camped out about 2 weeks along the beech[sic] and were almost eaten up by the mosquitoes. That are there by the score.
"When we started to return home we stopped at Los Angeles and had the pleasure of seeing two of the largest and oldest palm trees in the world. We visited in California about three months. When we returned we felt more than paid for our trip." [end of page and perhaps end of document]
On 15 Nov 1872, William Cullen Bryant gave (sold for $1) 160 acres to Julia Louisa Olds. This was the SE 1/4 S33 T16N R8 in Bureau County which Bryant had purchased from William Blake for $3000 on 18 July 1860. [However, the same legal description was used in this article for a gift to John H. Olds.]8

Justin Olds was born at Brimfield, (then) Hampshire County, Massachusetts,1 on 16 Aug 17542. He was the son of Jonathan Olds and Hannah Jones. Justin married (1) on 21 Jun 1775, Mehitable Hixon, daughter of John Hixon Jr. and Mary Morse. .3 Justin married (2) at Palmer, Massachusetts, on 7 May 1817, Louisa Felt. .4 Justin Olds died at Belchertown, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, on 26 Apr 1819. This gives his calculated age as 64 years, 8 months and 10 days.5,6,7
Justin Olds was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and in Shay's [sic -- usually given as Shays] Rebellion. He had the title of "Lieutenant" and lived at Belchertown, Mass.8 The Revolutionary War service is reported as:
"Old, Justin. Private, Capt. Joseph Hooker's co., Col. Ruggles Woodridge's regt; enlisted Aug 23, 1777; discharged Nov. 29 (also given as Nov. 30), 1777; service 3 mos. 16 days, under Maj. Gen. Gates at the Northward, including 9 days travel (175 miles) home. Roll dated Greenwich."9 The Belchertown Town Clerk recorded a list of names of those who lived in Belchertown, had participated in the Shays rebellion and, as a consequence, were required to take an oath of allegiance. Justin Olds was on this list, attested by E. Dwight, Town Clerk.10
The census enumeration of Belchertown, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, for 1790 listed Justin as follows: Justin Olds, 1 male under 16, 1 male 16 and over, 4 females. His mother, Hannah Olds, was the only other Olds listed in the town.11
In the Federal Direct Tax of 1798, Justin Olds of Belchertown was taxed as the owner of 47 acres with 2 houses, all valued at $333. (revised Vol. 17, p. 141) His farm was bounded southerly by Palmer, westerly by Ludlow, northerly and easterly by Hannah Old. His house was 30 feet long and 16 feet wide. The barn was fifty(?) feet long and 20 wide. (revised Vol. 17, p. 265).12
The census enumeration of Belchertown, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, for 4 Aug 1800 listed Justin as follows: Justin Olds, 1 male 10-15 [who?], 1 male 16-25 [Jonathan], 1 male 26-44 [who?], 1 male over 45 [Justin] and 2 females under 10 [Caty & Amanda], 1 female 10-15 [Susanna], 1 female 16-25 [Mehitable], 1 female over 45 [Mehitable]. This appears to indicate that all the children were still living at home, as well as two unidentified males.13
The census enumeration of Belchertown, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, for 1810 listed Justin as follows: Justin Olds, head of a family with one male over 45 [Justin], one female 10-16 [Amanda], two females 16-26 [Susanna and Caty], and two females over 45 [Mehitable and ?]. Thus, two males in 1800 and one female in 1810 are not accounted for in the listing of known children.14

His estate was probated in Northampton, Massachusetts in 1819. Jonathan Olds was the administrator of "Justin Olds, late of Belchertown". Smith Barrett and Joshua Cowles of Belchertown signed the $3000 bond on 4 May 1819. His estate included 63 acres of land with one undivided half of a house and barn, 7 acres of woodland, etc. On 15 Oct. 1819, Louisa Olds received her dower as widow of Justin Olds. In April 1820, Charles Bennett, Jr., was guardian of Cromwell B. Comstock and Catherine Comstock, minors under 14, children of Jacob Comstock and grandchildren of Justin Olds. Susannah and Amanda Olds signed for their portions which implies that they were still single. The distribution of the estate was to Louisa Olds, widow of Justin Olds, who got land and to the children and grandchildren of said Justin Olds, namely: to Jonathan Olds, son of Justin, to Susanna and Amanda Olds, daughters of Justin, to Cromwell Brown Comstock and Catherine Comstock, children of Mehitable Comstock, deceased wife of Jacob Comstock and daughter of Justin Olds.16
The record transcribed below is from the papers of descendant Julia Mathews sent to me by Regina Case in November 2008. It is on single sheet of light pink paper embossed with the name Harrison and folded once to make four pages measuring 5-1/4 by 7 inches. It is in a fine hand, clearly written, in a tabular form, suggesting it may have been copied from a Bible record although the information is of unknown origin.

Justin Hixon Olds was born on 4 Sep 1806 at Belchertown, Hampshire County, Massachusetts.1 He was the son of Jonathan Olds and Lucy Wood. Justin Hixon Olds married (1) Charity Louisa Bryant, daughter of Peter Bryant and Sarah Snell, on 15 Jun 1837 at Princeton, Bureau County, Illinois.2 Justin Hixon Olds married (2) Almira Kellam on 4 Jan 1872 at Peoria, Illinois.3,4,5 Justin Hixon Olds died on 30 Nov 1878 at Peoria, Peoria County, Illinois, at age 726 and was buried at Oakland Cemetery, Princeton, Bureau County, Illinois.7
For at least 1833 - 1835, Justin H. Olds appears to have run a retail business in Palmer as his name appears in several newspaper ads among those selling "T. White's Toothache Drops":

For sale by Sterns & Parsons, and D.
C. & H. Brewer, Springfield: Justin H.
Olds, Palmer; Jessup & Co. Westfield, and
at wholesale by the principal druggists in
New York Albany and Boston.
July 12, 1835.8

Justin Hixon Olds appeared on the census of 1840 at Bureau County, Illinois, as follows:
     4 m. 20-29, 1 m. 30-39, 1 f. under 5, 1 f. 1 f. 30-39, 1 f. 70-79.9
Justin Hixon Olds appeared on the census of 27 Aug 1850 at Bureau County, Illinois, as follows:
     116/123 Justin H. Olds, 43, clerk, real property $1500, b. Mass.
      Louisa C. Olds, 43, b. Mass.
      Sarah S., 11, b. Ill., attended school
Julia, 9, b. Ill., attended school
Bryant, 6, b. Ill., attended school
      John H., 3, b. Ill.
      Lucy W., 1, b. Ill.10
I have some (poor) images of the masthead for the Princeton Post, "published every Saturday". On December 15, 1852, and on April 12, 1854, J. H. Olds was editor. On 20 April, 1854, the paper was produced by J. H. Olds and J. M. Wilkinson. I have nothing that seems to be editorial opinion.
Justin H. Olds owned a brick kiln and sometimes worked to build houses and fences on Bureau County property which William Cullen Bryant owned for speculation.11
Justin Hixon Olds appeared on the census of 11 Jun 1860 at Princeton Township, Bureau County, Illinois, as follows:
     610/623 Justin H. Olds, 53, banker, b. Mass.
      Louisa C. Olds, 53, b. Mass.
      Sarah S. Olds, 21, clerk, b. Ill.
Julia L. Olds, 20, Con Sch Teacher, b. Ill.
John H. Olds, 13, b. Ill., attended school
      Lucy W. Olds, 11, b. Ill., attended school.12
In 1863, Justin H. Olds, U. S. Inspector at 16 S. Adams Street, was living at the corner of Farmington Road and Flora Avenue in Peoria, Illlinois.13
Justin H. Olds appears on the IRS tax lists for 1863 and 1865. In 1863, he was living in Peoria and owned a one horse buggy. In 1865, he reported an income of $1617 and he owned a carriage, a gold watch and a piano for which the total tax was $77.41.14 As a government inspector, he "originated a system of gaging that was adopted by the Government and he was sent to all the distilleries in the country to introduce it."15 " ... the job of storekeeper and gauger, whose duty station was the distillery, was considered a cushy one. And this is borne out by written histories of the job, which show that they were prime political appointments. This, of course, was before the establishment of the Civil Service Commission, which imposed greater regulation on government jobs. The job of storekeeper and gauger was abolished in 1980, and all agents were designated as inspectors. Today, these inspectors make only periodic visits to distilleries to check records to make sure the proper amount of tax is being reported..."16
Justin Hixon Olds appeared on the census of 23 Jun 1870 at 5th Ward, Peoria, Peoria County, Illinois, as follows:
Olds, Justin, 55, US Liquor gauger, b. New York (indicated by quote mark)
               living in a hotel.17
"In the civil history of the county in other parts of this work the name of Justin H. Olds frequently occurs. He was a native of Belchertown, Mass. Born September 4, 1806; died in Peoria, to which place he had removed, November 30, 1878. He was Circuit Clerk, County Treasurer of Bureau County and County Surveyor, besides other positions of honor and trust. His wife, Louisa G. [sic], was a sister of the Bryants. She died December 13, 1868, aged sixty-one years, eleven months and twenty-three days. Their children, Lucy Wood and Bryant, sleep by their side in Oakland Cemetery. The family reside in Peoria, to which place Mr. Olds removed in consequence of his appointment as Inspector in the Revenue Service."18
     His obituary states:
"DIED. At his residence, Saturday, November 30, Justin H. Olds, age 72 years, 3 months.
"The funeral service took place at his residence yesterday at 2:30 o'clock p.m. The remains were placed in the receiving vault at Springdale Cemetery from where they will be transferred in a few days to Princeton, Illinois, for interrment."19
For "The Late Mister Olds" a resolution of respect was adopted at a meeting of Internal Revenue Gaugers of the Fifth District, Illinois.20
     Another obituary for Justin states:
     "Died.
"At Peoria, November 30th, 1878, of disease of the heart, Justin Hixon Olds.
"Mr. Olds was born in Belchertown, Mass., in September 1806.
"In the spring of 1836 he came to Princeton with Mr. Daniel King, and under the firm name of King & Olds opened a general stock of goods in a small building on Main street, near the present site of Winter & Cushing's drug store. Subsequently with Mr. John M. Gay, the firm of Gay & Olds kept a general country store on Main Street about where Gustin's now is.
"During the years 1839-1843 Mr. Olds resided on a farm in Lamoille, returning to Princeton in the fall of 1843, he formed a partnership for sale of general merchandise with Mr. J. H. Bryant, continuing for two years. In the fall of 1848 he was elected clerk of the Circuit Court serving acceptably in that office four years.
"In 1852 he bought the 'Princeton Advocate,' changed the name to the 'Princeton Post,' and continued its publication as a weekly paper for two years. From 1852 to 1859 he was agent for eastern capitalists loaning money in this vicinity. In 1859 with Messrs. J. H. Bryant and Rufus Carey, he formed a partnership under the firm name Carey, Olds & Co., for the transaction of banking and exchange business, continuing until the financial troubles incident to the breaking out of the rebellion led to the winding up of the business.
"In 1863 he was appointed revenue inspector at Peoria, in which office he earned a reputation for honesty and accuracy that was evidenced by his continuance in that position under the changes of administration until his death.
"Mr. Olds was married on the 31st day of July 1837 to Louisa C. Bryant, sister of Mr. John H. Bryant. This marriage was the first solemnized in the new county of Bureau. Mrs. Olds died Dec. 13th, 1867. Five children were born to them of whom three survive.
"Such is the record of leading events in the life of Mr. Olds. Few are left who greeted the new comer in 1836, and there are probably not very many in the county who knew him during his later years of residence here.
"His was not a life marked by any conspicuous episodes, his temperament was retiring and although firm in his connections[sic -- convictions?] he was not apt to attempt proselyting others.
"He was a member of the Congregational church and for several years one of the deacons of that church in this place.
"In politics he was an early and active antislavery man and later republican.
"Industrious in his business; honest and straightforward in his intercourse with his fellow men; liberal and public spirited, kind and obliging to all; he has left a memory that is a precious legacy to his family and friends."21

The obituary of John G. Bubach mentions Justin Olds as follows:
"For a time he [Bubach] clerked in the store of bis brother-in-law. Wm. Carse[?]. Afterwards, in company with Justin H. Olds he opened a dry goods store, which the1897 conducted about five years. He then went into the nursery business which he conducted for forty years."22
This article relates some of the events around the time Bureau County was forned. One of these was that in June 1838 Sheriff Cyrus Longworthy turned in a list of names to serve on the grand jury for the presebt term of court. Justin H. Olds was on this list, named to serve on Bureau County's first grand jury.23

Justus Olds married Mary Loomis.2 Justus Olds was born in 1778 at Southwick, Massachusetts.1 He was the son of Samuel Old and Elizabeth (?).1 Justus Olds died on 5 Feb 1847 at Middlefield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts.1,3
Middlefield settlers Justus and Levi Olds came from Southwick.4 "He came to Mid. [Middlefield] shortly after 1800. He lived on the West Hill in Mid. on the road to Washington just north of the north road to Becket."5
"In the year 1811 four citizens of Middlefield, evidently thinking their conditions or school advantages or proportion of the burden of taxes would be more satisfactory under changed arrangements proposed, or at least wishing to have their real estate taxed in one town only, submitted the following petition to the General Court:
'To the Honorable Senate and House of Representatives in General Court Assembled A. Domini 1811. The petition of Theodore Coats, John Norsott, Levi Olds & Justus Olds on the town of Middlefield in the County of Hampshire and Comonwealth aforesaid, humbly sheweth, that in their opinion, it is necessary that there should be an alteration in the town line between Middlefield in the County of Hampshire and Washington in the County of Berkshire, beginning where the town line crosses the north line of Levi Olds, thence westerly on the line of said lot to the end line of said lot and other lots to the south west corner of Mr. John Norcot's land, thence eastwardly about five or six rods to the original town line and we pray that your Honours would make the said alteration in the said town line and your petitioners as in duty bound will ever pray." This would have the effect of moving their lots from Washington to Middlefield. The town of Washington opposed the motion because of the difficulty of meeting demands from other property owners similarly situated with respect to that line and those on their other town lines and because they could not easily lose support for the poor and for the schools which was based on these lands and Polls. No change was made.6
     E. B. Olds details the family of Justus Olds in his "Unconnected Lines" section, making no connection to Samuel, although he seems to have been well informed on the families of the children of Justus and Mary. He appears not to have had Samuel's will. He says "Justus Olds, born 1778 in Southwick, Mass; died February 5, 1847, Middlefield, Mass; married Mary Loomis (1777 - 1855); he was a farmer."7
The McKallor article by Clement gives Justus, son of Samuel, "born in Southwick, Massachusetts, in 1778, died February 5, 1847; married Mary Loomis, born in 1777; they had ten childen.[not named]""

Smith and Smith say he was "possibly a son of Samuel" and was born "Southwick, 1778; d. Mid. [Middlefield] 2-5-1847; m. Mary, dau. of Nehemiah and Elizabeth (Morley) Loomis of Westfield, who was b. 1780; d. Mid. 9-25-1857. He came to Mid. shortly after 1800. He lived on the West Hill in Mid. on the road to Washington just north of the north road to Becket.". Eleven children are listed, as in Olds (which Smith and Smith had seen), but with somewhat different details.
Loomis (which predates Olds) gives Mary Loomis "b. 1777, m. Justus Olds, d. 1847. She d. 1855. Middlefield, Mass." and lists ten children (omitting Almira), but no parentage for Justus Olds.
