On 10 July 1820, at age 59, Jonathan Lombard apeared before the General Court of Massachusetts, in session at Springfield, in support of his application for a Revolutionary War pension for which he had applied on 2 June 1818, and which had been granted 23 June 1819. He was a carpenter but now unable to work due to Rheumatism and St. Anthony's fire. He had a wife, age 55, infirm but able to spin a little and cook a little. His daughter, Asenath, age 36, was unable to support herself and his son Justin, at age 17 was "just getting to be able to support himself by letting himself at daywork".5
Jonathan Lombard was a private in the Massachusetts Line. He had served from enlistment in 1780 until 1783 and was in Capt. Howell's Company of Col. Shephard's Regiment. As Jonathan Lombard, Jr., of Ludlow, he was married by Rev. Justus Forward to Asenath Olds of Belchertown on 3 June 1784, a fact certified in his pension file and taken from the records of the Congregational Church of Belchertown) and he obtained a pension under the act of 1818, to commence as of 20 June 1818 at the rate of $8/month. He died on 28 Oct 1838. A depostion by Justin Lombard states that he [Justin of Belchertown, son of Jonathan] was twenty-six years old "on the 8th day of March last past" and mentions his own sister Asenath Lombard.
From a petition, dated 28 Sep 1835, and an associated affadavit to renew his pension, the following statements are abstracted:
He had been removed from the roll because he had transferred property to his son Jonathan and daughter Asenath for their labor. A written contract was required but none existed. He drew up a deed to them on 1 March 1828. "Your petitioner would also state that he is now nearly 70 years of age, & his wife aged 65 years, & a daughter aged 47 all in a feeble state of health - his daughter infirm weak & almost helpless by reason of a fit of sickness some 16 or 18 years ago - his wife broken down with age & ill health - himself afflicted with two ruptures - the piles - & the rheumatism of many years standing has become a feeble decripid[sic] old man almost helpless, & will soon need, if not removed beyond the reach of want, the aid of public charity. It is submitted that, such having been the feeble & dependant himself & wife, if he had posesed, clear of incumbrances and debts, in 1818, any property in its greatest extent that he has owned within a period of 30 years past, it must before now have been all expended in their support."4
