Dennis G. Morgan married Margaret Bowers, daughter of John Bowers and Johanna "Hannah" Empfield.1 Dennis G. Morgan was born on 28 Feb 1834.1 He married (2) Sarah Waddle on 6 Aug 1876 at Richland County, Illinois.2 Dennis G. Morgan died on 2 Jul 1919 at age 85; Mrs. Robert Sands of Winter Haven, Florida, was the informant on his death certificate which states "unknown" for his birthplace and for the names and birthplaces of his parents. He died at 9:30 a.m. on 2 July 1919 of gangrene of the foot and leg and was buried in the Ebenezer Cemetery by W. A. Busefink of West Salem, Illiois. He had been a blacksmith and died at age 85 yrs 4 mos and 4 ds. He was buried 2 July 1923 at Ebenezer.3
Dennis G. Morgan and Margaret Morgan appeared on the census of 1860 at South Bedford Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, as follows: He is listed as D. G. Morgan, a day laborer, age 25, b. PA, and she was age 33. Their daughters were Lea Ann, age 6, and Mary A., age 3. All were born in Pennsylvania.4
Dennis G. Morgan and Margaret Morgan appeared on the census of 1870 at Noble Township, Richland County, Illinois, as follows: He was age 37, b. MD, and she was age 40, b. PA. Layann was age 15, b. PA, and Mary A was 13, b. PA.5
Dennis G. Morgan appeared on the census of 1880 at Shelby Township, Edwards County, Illinois, as follows: The listing is:
Morgan, Dennis G., 46, blacksmith, b. MD, father b. VA, mother b. MD
, Sarah, 42, wife b. IL, parents b. KY
, Leah Ann, daughter, 25, single, asusts in the home, b. PA, father b. MD, mother b. Ill

, Leona, age 1, granddau, b. Ill, father b. (blank), mother b. Ill
, Lulu M., age 2/12, b. Mar.,granddau, b. Ill, father b. (blank), mother b. Ill.
This presents a problem, showing Dennis Morgan with two granddaughters when his two daughters were still single.6
Mrs. Helen Haycraft remembered her great-grandfather Dennis Morgan who died at Samsville at the home of his daughter, Leah Ann Fildes, but had lived in Calhoun and was taken there to be buried. Dennis Morgan had a wooden leg -- had lost a leg due to diabetes which may have had origins in his Civil War services. She remembers that he told of being in a prison camp in dire need of food and water. They prayed and prayed for water -- then water came up thru the floor. She did not know the name of this prison, but when I suggested Andersonville, she readily agreed.
She remembers that she used to have to entertain Morgan by playing checkers with him and he always won. His wooden leg bothered him -- he had it as long as she knew him -- but he was not a bed patient until some time after he came to live with her grandmother. She thought Dennis Morgan had "tinkered" in a small shop in Calhoun and did not know of any place he had lived before Calhoun -- except she did know that they had come from Pennsylvania. She knew that Dennis Morgan's first wife was a Bowers and Pennsylvania Dutch but did not know whether Morgan was German.
Mrs Haycraft knew of no stories of the Bowers family except that Dennis Morgan's first wife was a sister of Peter Bowers.7
His obituary states:
"Dennis G. Morgan was born in Pennsylvania Feb. 28, 1834 and died July 2, 1919, age 85 years, 4 months and 4 days.
"He was married to Margaret Bowers on Oct. 4, 1855 and to this union two girls were born -- Mrs. David Fildes of Samsville and Mrs. Frank Holman of St. Louis, Mo. This wife preceded him in death some 45 years ago and he was again united in marriage to Sarah Waddle on Aug. 6, 1876, and to this uniion were born -- Mrs. Charles Kissinger of Gary, Ind. and Cora and Leslie who died in infancy.
"He was a veteran of the Civil war, having served three years after which he was honorably discharged. He has been afflicted for some time but he bore it all patiently. He has been confined to his bed for the past eight months at the home of his daughter, Mrs. D. M. Fildes.
"He was a member of the Christian church at Calhoun where he held his membership until he died.
"He leaves to mourn their loss three children, twelve grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends."
On her copy of this obituary, Maranda Bowers wrote "Peter Bowers' brother-in-law."1
