Lucy Ann Olds was born on 17 Sep 1830 at St. Joseph County, Michigan.1,3,4 She was the daughter of Abel Olds and Annie Thurston.1 Lucy Ann Olds married James R. Derby on 25 Jan 1851 at Michigan.1,5 Lucy Ann Olds died on 3 Jun 1911 at Yamhill County, Oregon, at age 80.6,7,8
Tipton, Cedar County, Iowa, was where the 1852 Olds wagon train members gathered for the journey to Oregon. Gowen says "Ann Derby (Lucy Ann), a sister of 'Little' George Olds, resided near Tipton, Iowa, in the eastern part of that state. She and her husband were to accompany the party and it was agreed among the various emigrants to make Tipton the rendezvous at which all would meed to start on the trip. As far as Tipton the route traversed a settled country through which no dangers aside from ordinary road hazards were to be expected."9 Edward Wallace adds: "Israel Mudge, a brother in law of Aaron Olds was living at Tipton at that time [about the first of May, 1852]. Some of our company had arrived at this place earlier than others. This was intended to be the last resting place before launching out on the wild plains. It was about the 10th of May when all was ready to start."10
"Following their arrival in Oregon the couple settled in Yamhill County and continued to reside there for the rest of their lives. Mr. Derby died in 1902; Mrs. Derby on June 3, 1911, at McMinnville, Oregon. Her obituary notice refers to eleven surviving grandchildren and to five surviving children, names of the children being: Jane Derby Garrison; Mary Derby High; Jerome Derby; and James Derby, all of McMinnville, Orgeon; and William Derby of Centralia, Washington."11
