His obituary states:
"SUCCEEDS AT LAST"
"Clarence H. Olds Ends His Life by Poison Route"
"MISLED HIS FAMILY"
"Said He Was Going to Manistee, but Went to Hotel"
"His Body is Found in a Room at the Clarendon When Door is Forced at Noon Today."
"Failure, even at attempts to end his life, is the reason for the self-inflicted death of Clarence H. Olds, well known in Big Rapids, Muskegon and Grand Rapids as manufacturer, politician and amusement promoter. His body was found in a room in the Clarendon hotel soon after noon today.
"'Several times that I can remember I have tried to end this miserable existence, but have failed as I have at everything else I ever tried to do. This time I hope to succeed.'
"This brief note was found with an emptied bottle labeled carbolic acid and a paper box marked morphine. By this means was the story told.
"At 614 South Laafyette [sic] street live a widow, a nineteen-year-old son, Clarence F., and Katherine M. Olds, a daughter twenty-one years of age. The son was notified of his father's death by The Press. The widow and daughter will be told of it by a letter which the suicide left on the table with the bottle and little paper box.
"Clarence H. Olds was born in Delphi, Ind., fifty-one years ago. He married and settled in Big Rapids about twenty-five years ago, soon becoming manager of the Michigan Cigar company of that city. Later he removed to Grand Rapids, engaging in the cigar business here. Then he entered politics. For ten yeara he served as statistical clerk and secretary of the street and crossing board at Lansing, where he was a Pingree appointee, serving under Sybrant Wesselius.
"Misled His Family
"Resigning two years ago with ample funds for a business venture, Mr. Olds purchased the Bijou theater in Muskegon and managed for one season the Lake Michigan park resort near that city. Failure seemed to follow him and he sold out his interests at a heavy loss.
"Despite his many failures Mr. Olds was very popular. He was elected alderman and city treasurer in Big Rapids and made a strong run for mayor in that city. His name is known throughout Michigan as active in fraternal circles. He was a member of the Masonic lodge at Big Rapids, a member of the Consistory here and also was a Knight Templar, a Woodman and an Elk.
"Surviving him besides his immediate family are two brothers, Edwin and Frank Olds, who conduct a laundry business in Detroit, and the Misses Jane and Anna Olds, also of that city.
"Leaving his family about a week ago, saying that he was going to Manistee on business, Mr. Olds was last seen by his wife and children. Wednesday last he registered at the Clarendon and has lived quietly there since. He was last seen alive Saturday night. When the chambermaid tried to enter his room yesterday she was asked not to disturb him. This noon it was decided by the manageement to force the door.
"Coroner Hilliker is conducting an investigateion."3
Another article adds:
"For years Olds was nicknamed 'Sky' after the famous lobbyist of the same name and for a time yesterday it was thought the old time lobbyist had taken his life."
"Sybrant Wessellus, who knew him well, says the man had no greater reason than many others to believe himself a failure, for he had succeeded in many thngs except in his effort to restrain his appetite for drink."5

Clarence L. Olds was born on 7 Oct 1853 at Batavia Township, Branch County, Michigan.1 He was the son of Martin P. Olds and Caroline B. Sprague.1 Clarence L. Olds married Alma Willis, daughter of George Willis and Mary Welch, on 22 Jun 1871.2
"Clarence L. Olds is an only son and child. He was educated in the common schools and in the high school of Coldwater and was thus equipped in able manner for life's practical and responsible duties. Having arrived at years of maturity he was married on the 22nd of June, 1871, to Miss Alma Willis, a daughter of George and Mary (Welch) Willis, who was born in Portage county, Ohio. Unto Mr. and Mrs. Olds has been born one son, Mortimer W., who wedded Miss Mary Bowers and resides on part of the old homestead.
"At the time of his marriage Clarence L. Olds located upon what is the old home property of the family in Batavia township, and here he has since lived, being engaged in general farming and stock raising. He has four hundred and forty acres of land which he carefully cultivates, and the fields have been placed under a high state of improvement, and return golden harvests for the care and labor bestowed upon them. He has never been known to take advantage of the necessities of his fellowmen in any trade transaction, but by close application and unfaltering diligence has won a gratifying measure of success. He has also been a potent factor in public life, giving his allegiance to the Democratic party, and upon that ticket he was elected and served for three terms as supervisor, being first chosen to the office in 1896. He belongs to the Masonic lodge of Coldwater and to the Maccabees tent. He has been a lifelong resident of Branch county, and with the exception of three years has lived continuously in Batavia township. A worthy representative of an honored pioneer family, his worth is widely acknowledged by all who know him and his life has been in keeping with the splendid record made by his father and his grandfather. One cannot carry his investigations far into the history of the county without learning of the close and honorable connection of the Olds family with the history of this section of the state, and Mr. Olds like his ancestors has stood as the defender of its best interests and as the promoter of various measures for the general good."2
