Alice "Allie" Cook was born on 7 Feb 1855 at Ohio.1 She married Volney E. Manley, son of George Manley and Jane Elizabeth Olds, on 7 Feb 1876.1 Alice "Allie" Cook died on 25 Dec 1916 at Hartford, Van Buren County, Michigan, at age 61.2 She was buried at Maple Hill Cemetery, Hartford, Van Buren County, Michigan.3
Her obituary states: The Hartford Day Spring, Wednesday, December 27, 1916, page 1
"WELL KNOWN LADY FOUND DEAD IN BED
"Mrs. V. E. Manley Died Suddenly Yesterday Morning—Heart Disease Was Cause
"After a brief illness of heart disease, Mrs. Allie Manley, wife of Volney E. Manley, was found dead in bed at the family home on Franklin street Tuesday morning.
"Miss Elitha Williams, who has been caring for her during her illness, was sleeping with Mrs. Manley. They had been talking at midnight, but when Miss Williams awoke in the morning she found Mrs. Manley dead. The Grim Reaper had appeared during the night, and the family found only his harvest in the morning.
"For the past two years Mrs. Manley had been a sufferer of rheumatism. During the past ten days complications of the heart developed which resulted in her death.
"Mrs. Manley was the oldest child of Sullivan and Harriet Cook, who were among the well known pioneers of Hartford and had spent practically her entire life here. She was born in Ohio on February 7, 1855, and came with her parents to Michigan as a child. She was married to Volney E. Manley on February 7, 1876, and to them were born two sons, Max, now deceased, and Ned Manley of Hartford, who with the husband survives.
"She also leaves two brothers, Frank and Ned Cook of Hartford and three sisters, Mrs. C. B. Manley of Lawrence, Mrs. S. G. Howard of Traverse City, and Mrs. M. E. Deane of Hartford.
Mrs. Manley was actively interested in many phases of community welfare, and had been active in the social life of the village. She was one of the organizers of the Ladies' Library association, serving several terms as librarian, and was a past president of the Woman's Club. She was also a member of Benevolence chapter, O. E. S., and had served in the offices of the chapter.
"She was of a bright and cheerful disposition, and kept open house for her friends and neighbors—being never too busy to give attention and sympathy when needed. She was equally popular among the young and old, and will be missed in the community.
"Funeral services will be held at the home at two o'clock tomorrow afternoon, Rev. J. S. Hamilton officiating, and interment will be made at Maple Hill."4
