"The pioneer landmarks are being removed one by one; and justice to their memory and to their many struggles and triumphs demand a public recognition, which may be preserved in the archives of the family, to stimulate the coming generations.
"The subject of this sketch was born in Connecticut, May 24, 1802, moved to Niagara county, New York, where he joined his fortune with Miss Renew Scovill, with whom he lived for fifty-seven years. They remained there till the first three children were born, when they moved to Chautauqua county, New York, where they remained till they came to Hartford in 1842.
"It required some nerve to face the frowning forests, which he met with vigor that soon redeemed the virgin soil of a large farm and repaid him for his masterly efforts in abundant crops, which had placed him in circumstances. He built a house in the village and removed thither until the loss of his wife, on the 3rd of January 1883, when he disposed of that property and returned to the farm, where departed with disease of the heart, March 30, 1884, leaving nine children: two daughters and seven sons, besides many grandchildren and some great grandchildren, to mourn his loss.
"The funeral services were conducted from the Baptist church, Eld. J. H. Reese, of Bangor officiating. A large audience of earnest sympathizers were present and aided by loving words of condolence and deeds of affection.
