Francis Cooke

M, ( - 7 Apr 1663)
Relationship9th great-grandfather of Daniel Wayne Olds
Last Edited6 Dec 2016
Francis Cooke married Hester Mahieu, daughter of Jennie (?), in 1603 at Leyden, Holland.1 Francis Cooke died on 7 Apr 1663 at Plymouth, Massachusetts.2
"His marriage to Hester Mahieu in 1603 is shown in 'Kerkelijke Houwelijke,' at Leyden (Liber E, Folio 69, verso), but the day and month are not given. Judging from the preceding and following entries, it is thought to have been on June 30, 1603."3
"Francis Cooke and his son John embarked on the Speedwell at Delfs-haven in July, 1620, leaving behind Hester and the other children. At Southampton or Plymouth, England, they were transferred to the Mayflower and in her set sail from the latter place on Wednesday, 6/16 September, 1620.
"He signed the Compact in the cabin of the Mayflower on Saturday, 11/21 Nov., 1620. [M. D. I:79]"4
"We know Francis Cooke's children from the "Division of Cattle" made 22 May 1627 (Plymouth Colony Records, edited by Nathaniel B. Shurtleff and David Pulsifer, vol. 12, p. 9, hereafter PCR). The first lot fell to Francis Cooke, his wife Hester Cooke, John Cooke, Jacob Cooke, Jane Cooke, Hester Cooke, Mary Cooke and 6 others including Experience Mitchell."5
His name is on the Plymouth list of men able to bear arms in August, 1643, so he was between the ages of 16 and 60, and he must have been born after August 1583. "Against this official record, which is practically the statement of Francis Cooke himself and must be accepted accordingly, can be put nothing but the following entry in Bradford's list of passengers: 'Francis Cooke is still living, a very old man, and hath seen his childrens, children, have children:" and the marginal note an unknown hand: "dyed 7 of Aprill 1663 above 80.
"This marginal note is by the same hand that added the notes concerning the deaths of Bradford and Standish, both of which are incorrect.* [* MD 1: 12, 13] These errors cast suspicion on the age in the Cooke note, and the statement "above 80" was probably due to the well known tendency to overestimate the years of an age person after his death. Moreover a marginal note in an unknown had, made possibly years after his death of the person, and in a book which never belonged to any member of the Cooke family, can have no weight against the official enrollment of 1643."6
"When Francis Cooke wrote his will on the seventh of the tenth month 1659 he left everything to his wife Hester during her life and made no mention of his children, except son John Cooke was named executor with Hester (MD 2:24 f.) Francis Cooke died at Plymouth 7 April 1663 (MD 2:24)."5

Lillian A. Cooke married William Parker Olds, son of George Daniel Olds and Sarah A. Fairbanks, on 19 May 1880 at Lafayette, Yamhill County, Oregon.1,2,3 Lillian A. Cooke died on 6 Apr 1914 at Portland, Oregon.4
Lillian A. Olds and William Parker Olds appeared on the census of 8 Jun 1900 at Ward 6, Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon, as follows:
     Olds, William P., head, b. Jan. 1857, 43, marr. 20 years, b. Oregon, father b. Ohio, mother b. N. Y., Dry Good Merch.
      , Lillian C., wife, b. Oct. 1856, 43, marr. 20 years, 0 children, 0 living, b. Oregon, father b. Maine, mother b. Illinois.5
     Her obituary states:
"OLDS -- In this city, April 6, at 3 P. M., at her late home, No. 373 Hassalo street, Mrs. Lillian C. Olds, beloved wife of W. P. Olds. Funeral will be held at 2:30 o'clock today. Services will be conducted at the Unitarian Church, Broadway and Yamhill street, and at the Portland Crematorium."4
Another obituary for Lillian states: "Sincere sympathy is extended to Mr. William P. Olds of Portland. Oregon, whose devoted wife, Mrs. Lillian C. Olds, died on April 6th. Mrs. Olds had been in ill health for several months, but had been confined to her bed but a few days. Mrs. Olds was prominent in the work of the Unitarian Church and did much for charity, being greatly interested in the work of the Women's Union, Mann Old People's Home, and Florence Crittenton Home. She was especially interested in music and literature. Mrs. Olds was a native of Lafayette, Oregon, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Amos Cooke, well known pioneers. She was married to Mr. Olds 33 years ago."6
"OLDS INHERITANCE TAX FIXED. -- An order was signed yesterday by Circuit Judge Cleeton declaring $179.96 due to the State of Oregon as inheritance tax from the estate of Mrs. Lilliam Cooke Olds who died April 6. The estate, appraised at $22,996, is inherited by her husband, William P. Olds, who must pay a tax of 1 per cent after his statutory exemption of $5000. Mr. and Mrs. Olds made a mutual will, each leaving all of his or her property to the survivor."7
     W. P. Olds gave a pipe organ to Reed College in memory of his wife. The Oregonian reported his address given at the dedication.
"W. P. Olds last Sunday formally presented to Reed College the fine pipe organ that had been installed in the chapel. Mr. Olds dedicated the organ to the memory of his wife with the following address:
"''From the earliest dawn of recorded history it has been the custom to honor the memory, character and deeds of those who 'have crossed the bourne from which no traveler returns' by erecting monuments of various kinds, from the modest tablet in church or vault to the 'temples of fame which the children of vanity rear.'
"'Following such customs and feeling deeply her worthiness, we are assembled today to dedicate an instrument of melody to the use of this institution of learning in memory of one whose home was in our midst and whose beautiful life was an inspiration. She passed from us at life's meridian, when eager winds were filling every sail and each day was crowned with usefulness. She loved everything beautiful either in nature or if fashioned by the heart of man. Her soul was filled with noble harmonies and charmed by their melodies, and so desirous was she to avoid the sadness of funereal music that she directed there be no music at her obsequies. Gentle, kind and cheerful, she believed life should be filled happiness and every day be one of joy -- so much did she wish to banish all causes for sorrow and grief, she requested that her remains be cremated, the ashes scattered among the flowers, and no tablet be erected in the cemetery to call attention to her resting place and bring tears of sorrow to those who loved her. Her religion was of love without superstition or fear, and no hate or envy found entrance into it -- with love and good will to all and without complaint or objection, she faithfully performed her daily tasks; she gave aid freely to the sick and suffering, and large was her bounty to the poor; she sought no publicity and her unselfish acts were as flowers that blush unseen. None knew her but to love her and her example was a blessing to the community in which she lived.
"'To her, every place was a temple of justice, and liberty a sacred inheritance to be preserved and passed on to to[sic] those who follow us, at any cost. She believed higher education for both sexes to be the foundation for human development; that music should be a part of every one's education and that from the simple folk songs of childhood to the grand harmonies of the great masters it should be taught for its smoothing companionship and inspiration to higher ideals. No memorial could be found more fitting or representative of her character than musical harmony.
"'And, now, reverently, lovingly and with a full acknowledgment of my unnumbered obligations to her, I present this instrument of melody to Reed College in memory of Lillian Cooke Olds, the wife of my youth and for 34 years my beloved companion. Such an associate is one of the greatest prizes to be drawn in life's lottery. ...8 "
