On 23 Oct 1783, Ambrose Cobb of Chesterfield County, Virginia, wrote his will. His bequests were to his sisters, includiing "to my sister Phebe Cobbs my tract of land whereon I now live during her natural life & after her Death then the said tract of land to descend to my brother Samuel Cobbs and to his Heirs forever.
"Item I give & bequeath to my Sister Mary Perkinson my Negro Fellow named Jack to her and the Heirs of her Body provided that David Perkinson gives up the Money to my Estate that I owe him on his wife's account." The remainder of estate was to be sold to pay his debts with the remainder to be divided equally among his sisters Elizabeth Booth, Hannah Marshall and Phebe Cobbs. This is taken to establish the identify of the wife of the David Perkinson who died in Union County, South Carolina but more evidence is needed.3

Ambrose Cobbs married Anne White.1 Ambrose Cobbs was born c 1603 at Petham Parish, Kent, England.2 He died b 15 Jan 1656 at Bristol Parish, Henrico County, Virginia.3
The remote ancestor, Henry Cobbes, fl. 1258, was a landowner in "the parish of Hope, St. Mary (in the Marsh), New Romney and Newchurch." [These are place names in Co. Kent, England.]4
The William and Mary Quarterly, from which my outline has been taken, is a respected journal but the 1910 standards of published genealogical research are far below those of today. There is now a website entitled "Cobb and Cobbs", run by Betty Atkinson, which includes a well-studied English pedigree of twelve generations of "Cobbes of Kent" down to "Ambrose COBBS "the Emigrant" (Ambrose, Thomas, John, Thomas, John, Thomas, Edmund (Edward), Edward (Edmund), Richard, John, Henry) who was born about 1603 in Petham, Kent, England. He died about 1655 in Henrico County, Virginia (Bristol Parish)." There is a more detailed discussion of Ambrose here and some more information on his son Robert. After that it continues down to Mary Cobb who married David Perkinson, but only in bare-bones chart form. This site is available for personal use but is copyrighted.5
Ambrose Cobbs, on 25 July 1639, patented 350 acres upon the Appomattox River for the importation of himself, Anne his wife, Margaret his daughter, Robert his son and Richard Barker, Hugh Barker, and Thomas Harvey.6 From the records of York County he appears to have had two other sons: Ambrose and Thomas. Thomas died without issue in 1702.1
