Need to correct the title from MGEN Robin Olds to BGEN. Our father Robert was the MGEN.
I have always referred to Robin as my brother vice half brother but some would prefer to do otherwise to be absolutely correct. I spent 10 days with Robin in Steamboat Springs in Feb of 2007 and it was a great time despite his health. We were the two who made the service a career and had a bond because of that (Even despite the fact my service was in the Navy!).
I am the surviving brother. There were four Olds brothers: Robin/Steven/Sterling/Frederick. Robin was 14 years older than myself and was a teenager when I was born at Langley Field, Virginia. Robin and Steven Olds were in fact full brothers born to MGEN Robert Olds, USAAC and Eloise. Eloise died and Robert married Majorie Langley. She had two teenaged sons from a previous marriage. They were divorced in less than 2 years. He then married my mother Helen Sterling Olds in 1933 and Sterling (Dusty) was born at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas in March 1935 and I was born at Langley Field in June 1936. They then separated in late 1939 and were divorced in 1940. His last wife was Nina Gore Auchincloss (children Gore Vidal and Nina by previous marriages).

"Bureau County School Notes
. .. Literary and Music program held at the Bureau Twp. Schools Tuesday afternoon and evening May 8th. The winners of the different events are as follows:
. . .
Boys Oration
1St. 'The Call to Arms' Robert Olds, Wyanet."8
Robert Lee Olds attended Wyanet High School during the years 1927 - 1931. The 1928 Wyhian (yearbook) essentially ignored the freshman as he is neither pictured nor named with his class. However, close examination shows that "R. Olds" was a reserve on the basketball team. Since "E. Olds" was also listed, we are fortunate to have a least a first initial in Robert's listing among the reserves. However, some of the many friends who signed his copy of this yearbook left comments. Among them were:
Inez A. Hayden --"I have great hopes of you as an orator"
Gerald L. Barnett -- "Go to it Patrick" [Patrick Henry?]
Robert W. Watson -- "Friends Romans and Countrymen (Oh! you Cicero)"
Virden Bimm -- "Oh those pretty eyes, how we like 'em"
Gladys Stroud -- "Don't forget the freshman party"
Leroy Halberg -- "Don't forget track practices"
By the end of his sophomore year, the 1929 Wyhian had taken more notice. He is pictured with the sophomore classs. He is also pictured with the Student Council, along with Ardeth Olds and Elvin Olds. He is listed as "Manager" in The Athletic Association, the male representative from the Student Council. At the Athletic Banquet on April 25, "Robert Olds did himself exceeding well in the chair." He is pictured with the Football Squad as Right Guard and the description of the basketball team, The Eagles, says "R. Olds coming to the front with plenty of speed." He apparently was not on the first team in either football or basketball as a sophomore. In a regional competition reported under "Zone Contest at Wyanet May 7", it is reported "In Boys oration Bob Olds again came out in first place, and in girls Humorous, Ardeth Olds was first." Although there was competition in various areas of performance, these seem to be the only first place awards claimed for Wyanet.
I do not have the 1930 Wyhian. In his senior year, the Wyhian reported a summary of his activities as:
Robert Olds -- "Bob"
Football 1,2,3; Basketball 1,2,3,4; Track 1,2,3,4, Captain, 3; Baseball 2; Athletic Board, Manager 2; Student Council 2,3; President 3; Zone Contest 1,2,3; County Contest 1,2,3
"Argue early, argue late;
If a line were crooked, he'd argue it straight."
During this year he was on the Wyhian staff and also played the part of David McKenzie in the Senior Class Play which was "The Charm School". The class will stated that "Robert Olds leaves the right of making wrong remarks in civics class to Clark Larson." This yearbook also included his baby picture.9
Robert Olds also won the Boys Oration for Wyanet in May 1930.10
These notes show Bob's early interest in orations. I have a typed copy of one such oration that he gave, titled "What Price Peace" by Kathleen Norris. It is not now clear whether he wrote this after reading her book of this title or whether it was prepared by someone else. Neither do we know when and where it was delivered.
Bob had a diamond stick pin given him after an oration in Bureau County which he did not win. I think it was from a Mr. Whitlock, a client of Milford Olds.
I remember that he once gave a recitation of "The Cremation of Sam McGhee" by Robert W. Service, with great effect. Another time, he prepared and delivered a speech on the "Know Nothing Party." In particular, I remember that preparation for this one including blowing out the contents of several fresh eggs so the empty shells could be thrown at the audience as a surprise at the end. Sadly, the content of the presentation is as lost as the contents of those eggs. These two presentations were made at Kimmel School while I was attending there. Such forms of community entertainment have largely disappeared, even before any rural impact of television. [DWO]
I am not able to further interpret the following newpaper clipping. Probably Robert finished last.

"Argue early, argue late;
