John Mullins was the son of John Mullins and Jennie Bailey. John Mullins was buried at Clintwood, Dickenson County, Virginia. He married Olive Cox, daughter of David Cox and Mary (?). John Mullins died on 19 Sep 1859 at Dickenson County, Virginia.
"My maternal gran an unknown date father, John Mullins, came to Holly Creek, and built a cabin near where Columbus Phipps now lives in the town of Clintwood in 1829. My mother and her brothers, David and Solomon, stayed there and made a crop while their father went to North Carolina to get the rest of the family. My mother said she was 14 years old at that time. During this summer the two boys went to visit relatives in Kentucky for two weeks, and mother stayed alone at the cabin. She was born 15 May 1815, in Yancy County, North Carolina, on the Toe River. My great-grandfather was named John Mullins, and was called "Buttin' John" and "Grandsir". He came to Clintwood late in life and died and was buried there. His grave is above John Powers' place in Clintwood. Mother said her people were 'Tuchahoe and Buckskin'. Grandpa Mullins died when I was small. He had several brothers. Dr. Jim Mullins was one.
"His children were, in order of birth, as far as I can tell, as follows: David (eldest), Mary Jane (my mother), Solomon, Isaac, Kizzie, Nancy, John, Harmon, etc."1

John Mullins was buried at Clintwood, Dickenson County, Virginia. He married Jennie Bailey. John Mullins died in 1849 at Clintwood, Dickenson County, Virginia.
The following quote at least provides some possible references to the name John Mullins, althogh much of the early tradition of this family is yet to be proven.
"The progenitor of the Mullins clan from Southwestern Virginia was John Mullins Sr. ... my 4-g grandfather. John Muillins and his bride Jennie Bailey came to this country from Ireland just before the Revolutionary War. John married a second time, Mollly Brandon. Both wives died young. John and his family settled on the beautiful Big Toe River, in that part of Burke Co., N. C. which later became Mitchell, Yancey and Avery Counties, N. C. ...
"John Mullins Sr. was willing to fight for his new country's freedom because he joined "The Over the Mountain Men" to win one of the most decisive battles in the Revolutionary War. (see John Mullins Sr. and his brother Ambrose's name in "History of Patrick and Henry Counties, Va." by Virginia and Lewis Pedigo, page 74, list of soldiers.) It was while John Sr. and his family were living in N. C. he received a grant for Continental Line Service (see State Department of Archives and History. N. C. Grants #632,642 and 870). John and his wife had three sons and three daughters (see 1790 N. C. census). The sons were John, Jr. (who married Ollie Coz), Solomon, my 3-g grandfather..(who married Sarah Greenfield Cathey) and James (who married Nancy Mullins). The names of the three daughters has [sic] never been found. When John received his military grant, his sons Solomon and John Jr. are listed as chain carriers in measuring the land grant for their father at their homeplace in Burke County, N. C. (see N. C. Land Grant Bk. 74, Page 551)."1

His father was Mike Murphy and his mother was Mary Curran, both born in Ireland. Neither parent has an age listed although there is a column for this information. The age would be missing if they were dead but possibly for other reasons as well.2
Frank J. Murphy appeared on the census of 3 Apr 1930 at 6711 Sheridan Road, 49th Ward, Block 153, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, as follows:
Murphy, Frank J., renter, age 50, clerk for the City of Chicago, b. N. H., parents b. Irish Free State
, Leone, wife, age 50, b. Iowa, parents b. Canada English
, Raymond B., son, age 22, had attended school or college in the past year, b. Iowa, father b. N. H., mother b. Iowa
, Frank J., son, 19, clerk in publishing
Bates, Mae, age 55, sister-in-law, widow, first married at age 25, b. Iowa, parents b. Canada English.9
In 1925, Joseph Bates, an 18 year old nephew, is listed with the family of Austin Lally and his wife Gertrude (Brereton) Lally. His parents are given as John Bates, b. Ohio, and Mae Brereton, age 50, who had been married in Clinton, Ohio. Thus, the Mae Bates in the 1930 census with Leona Murphy is her sister.2

John Murphy appeared on the census of 1866 at Dale County, Alabama, as follows:

Although some Trees on Ancestry.com make this connection to the 1870 census record, this is not decisive. The entry is difficult to read. The ages do not match the 1880 entries for this family in the same county. Connection requires merging Andrew, age 4, b. AL with Jackson, age 14, b. AL and Albert. age 2. b. "One of the first weddings of the fall season occurred Saturday, September 5, at four o-clock at the Evangelical U. B. Church, Robinson when Miss Karen Murphy, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. R. B. Murphy, became the bride of Larry Lowrance. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lowrance are the groom's parents.
"Before a setting of palms, ferns, baskets of white gladioli and burning tapers Rev. Kenneth L. Brooks, pastor of the church, heard the vows of the impressive double ring ceremony.
"Preceding the ceremony, Miss Anna Keeley, organist, played bridal airs and accompanied the soloist, Richard Hamilton, as he sang "Always", "O Promise Me" and while the couple knelt on a satin pillow, "Wedding Prayer."
"As Miss Mary Keeley played Lohengrin's "Wedding March" the lovely bride entered the church on the arm of her father who gave her in marriage. The former Miss Murphy chose for her wedding a floor length gown of ivory satin with an oval neckline and elbow sleeves. The basque waist fell into a softly bouffant skirt with a chapel length train. The neckline and skirt had appliques with motifs of tiny seed pearls and re-embroidered lace. Her fingertip veil of bridal bouquet was a white orchid surrounded by stephanonatis [sic] and ivy tied with white satin ribbons ending in lovers knots.
"Mary Lou Grant, St. Louis, Mo., was maid of honor, Miss Shirley Adams, Robinson, was bridesmaid and Miss Lois Murphy, sister of the bride, served as junior bridesmaid. The bride's attendants were dressed alike in deep blue velvet gowns with fitted bodice, oval necklines and elbow length shirred sleeves. The full length skirts were ballerina length. Their pumps matched their dresses and they wore small circlets of matching velvet with circular veils. They carried nosegays of blue and white carnations.
"Little Miss Joyce Murphy, small sister of the bride, was flower girl. She wore a frock of sheer white nylon with the tiered skirt ruffled in lace. She wore a band of blue and white carnations in her hair and carried a white basket filled with rose petals.
"The groom chose Rodger [sic] Murphy, brother of the bride, as best man. Ushers were: James Connours, Donald Cochran and Donald Rich, Robinson, and Henry McCleary of Santa Fe, New Mexico. All the men of the wedding party wore dark trousers and white coats with carnation boutonnieres. The groom wore a spring of stephanotis from the bride's bouquet.
"Master Mark Varner, nephew of the groom, served as ring bearer. He too wore dark trousers and a white coat and carried the rings on a white satin pillow.
"Mrs. Murphy chose for her daughter's wedding a blue chiffon dress with a shirred bodice and a full skirt. She wore a blue feather hat and blue pumps. Her corsage was an orchid.
"Mrs. Lowrance, the groom's mother, wore a navy blue silk sheath dress with matching shoes. Her hat and purse were plum satin.
"Immediately following the ceremony Dr. and Mrs. Murphy gave a reception in the church dining room. The bride's table, covered in blue, was centered with a three-tier wedding cake topped by a miniature bride and groom. Burning tapers were on each side and punch bowls stood at each end. Appointments were in crystal. After the bride and groom had cut the first piece of cake, guests were served cake, punch, nuts and mints by Mrs. Robert Olds, Calhoun, Ill., Mrs. Charles McNamara, Villa Park, and Mrs. Helen Murphy, Chicago, all aunts of the bride, and Miss Dee Dee Wood. Miss Sandra Chronic had charge of the guest book. Miss Lana Boyd caught the bride's bouquet.
"For going away the new Mrs. Lowrance wore a royal blue wool dressmaker suit trimmed with dyed to match fur. She wore a small blue feather band and the orchid from her bridal bouquet.
"After a honeymoon in Kentucky and Ohio, Mr. and Mrs. Lowrance will be at 927-6th street, Charleston, Illinois. Larry will be a student this year at Eastern Illinois University.
"Out-of-town guests were Lt. and Mrs. Robert Kaley and son, Columbus, Ohio; Mrs. David L. Grant and daughters Laurice and Mary Lee of St. Louis; Mr. and Mrs. John Lowrance of Assumption; Stephen Moore and Carter Moore, Allentown, Pa; Mr. and Mrs. Ogle French, Sumner; Mrs. R. M.
