     Her obituary states:
“Mrs. Fannie Shank died April 27, 1891, aged 81 years, 10 months and nine days. She was born June 18, 1809, in Lancaster county, Penn. When a child her parents moved to Morrisons’ Cove, Bedford county, Penn., and on the 15th of March 1827, she was married to Samuel Brown, by whom she had seven children -- five daughters and two sons. Her oldest daughter, Mary Bowers, lives in southern Illinois; her second daughter, Hannah, died Jan. 15, 1869, the wife of John G. W. Smith in Des Moines township, this county; her third daughter, Fannie Teeter, lives in Tuscola, Ill; her fourth daughter, Delilah Goughnour, lives in Polk County, this state, as does also her fifth daughter, Margaret E West. Her oldest son, Samuel H. Brown, lives in Fremont county, this state, and her second son, Daniel W. Brown, was killed by lightning in 1860, on his return from Colorado, in western Nebraska. Mrs. Shank, with her husband and family, came to Iowa in August 1847, and settled in Des Moines township, this county. Her husband, Samuel Brown, died Sept. 27, 1863. For the next nine years she lived the greater part of the time with John G. W. Smith, of Des Moines township. In January, 1872, she married Daniel Shank of Dallas county, with whom she lived about fourteen years. She then became too old and feeble to keep house and moved to her daughter’s, Margaret E. West, of Polk county, where she lived to the day of her death. She made a request to be buried by the side of her first husband in Des Moines township and her wish was faithfully complied with, all her children in this state being present. Very early in life she united with the church of her choice, the German Babtist [sic], known as the Dunkard, of which she was a faithful and devout member all her life. She leaves a husband, four daughters and one son and many grand-children to mourn her loss.”.2

Henry Hoover

M
Relationship5th great-grandfather of Daniel Wayne Olds
Last Edited8 Apr 2018
Henry Hoover married Catherine Good, daughter of Jacob Good.

Who were the Hoovers of Martic Township, Lancaster County, PA before 1800?

Many of the early Germanic families that settled this region were Mennonite. Two of their leaders were Martin Kendig and Hans Herr. They had come to the colonies in 1710 from Switzerland where Mennonites and others were suffering from significant discriminatory treatment by their governments. Kendig, with others, had obtained a warrant dated 10 Oct 1710 for 10,000 acres north of Pequa Creek in Chester County (now Lancaster County). Michael Shenk and Hans Huber can be added to list of settlers by 1715. "Martin Kendig and Hans Herr were the richest and most influential members of the colony, and much of the land for the new settlers was first taken up in the names of these two men." On 8 Feb 1717 it was agreed that Kendig and Herr could have 5000 acres "to be taken up about Conestoga and Pequea Creeks ..., it being for the settlements of several of their countrymen that are lately arrived here". Warrants dated 22 September [sic -- November] 1717 were then made to several individuals, including Michael Shenk but no Hoover. John Ulrich Huber is listed among the settlers before 1727.1
When the Germans petitioned the Board of Property for this land in Sep 1717, they "were asked if they understood the Disadvantage they were under by their being born aliens, that therefore their Children could not inherit nor they themselves convey to others the Lands they purchase, according to the Laws of England, which may in such Case be extended hither. They answered that they were informed thereof before, however inasmuch as they had removed themselves and ffamilies into this Province they were, notwiths'g the s'd Disadvantage, willing to purchase Lands for their own Dwelling. It was further said by the Commissioners that it was their Business to sell and dispose of the Proprietors' Land to Such as would purchase it, yet at the same time they were willing to let them know, as they are aliens, the Danger that might ensue if not in Time prevented, also that some Years ago a Law was Enacted here and afterwards passed by the late Queen Ann. for enabling Divers aliens, particularly named therein, to hold and enjoy Lands in this Province, and that the like advantage might probably be obtained for those amongst themselves that were of good Report if a Petition were preferred to this present Assembly when they sit to do Business. With this advice they seemed pleased and desired to be informed with such a sitting of the Assembly would be, tnat they might preferr a Petition to them for such a Law as is above mentioned."2
The 5000 acre warrant to Kendrick and Hess is listed in the "Old Rights Index: Chester County" under the letter K, warrant no. 8. Since the land was to be taken up in several surveys, this index points to several entries in the Copied Survey Books. The one in Book D74, p. 32, shows the terms of the warrant given on 22nd "9br" [which would be November, not September as sometimes reported] 1717. On the reverse is recorded the return of several of the surveys, two of which (now, as corrected) name a Hoover. One is to John Hoover, returned 19 7br 1744, for 105 acres (see D82, p. 19) and the other is to Hans Hoober (see D82, p. 3)3 4

A selected few of the "Dutch" (as opposed to English) names and property evaluations on the 1718 tax list (the first one known) for Conestoga Township, Chester (now Lancaster) County, Pennsylvania , are: Martin Kendig (50 pounds), Michael Shank, Jr. (8 pounds), "Woolrick Howry" (5 pounds), Jacob Hoover (5 pounds), and Michael Shank, Sr. (15 pounds).5,6 For 1719/20 the list includes: Michael Shanke (17 pounds), Martin Kendich (100 pounds), Michell Shanke (22 pounds), Michael Shanke, Jr. (24 pounds), Jacob Huber (22 pounds), and Jacob Hoover (18 pounds). For 1720/21 the list includes: Woolrich Houser (30 pounds) and Jacob Houber (10 pounds). For 1721, the Hoovers in Conestoga were: Jacob Houber (10 pounds), John Jacob Houber (10 pounds), Woolrich Hoover (6 pounds.) and John Hoober (8 pounds). In 1722/23 East Conestoga had: John Jacob Hoover (12 pounds) and John Hoober (10 pounds). One wonders about such names as Henry Howry, Jacob Hobbin, John Howry, Meirick Wowser, and John Howry. They may not all be written or transcribed correctly. The 1724/25 list for Conestoga Township shows no assessment amounts but includes John Hoover, Jacob Hoover and Woolrich Houser. For 1725/26 the Conestoga tax list includes: John Hover (tax = 4s), Jacob Good (tax = 3 s 3p), Jacob Hoover (tax = 2s), John Hover tax = 3s), and "Woolrich Houser" (tax =3 s 3p). For 1726/27 the Conestoga tax list includes: Mart Kendrick & son (tax = 12s 6 p), Henry Hoover (tax = 3s), "H. Howery" (tax = 6s), John Hoover, (tax = 3s), "Noah Houser"7, Mich. Hoover (tax = 6s) , and Mike Shank (4s 3p).5,8
John Woolrick Houver of Lancaster County is the only Hoover (unless John Houser should also be included) to sign a petition asking for the Act which was then passed 14 Feb 1719/20, to obtain rights equal to natural born citizens to hold and transfer land. These signers were men who had entered Pennsylvania between the years 1700 and 1718 as subjects of the Empire of Germany.9

In January, 1733 [a date shared by many warrants], three Hoober men ((A) Woolrich Hoober, (B) Jacob Hoover and (C) Henry Hoober, all below) obtained warrants for land in this area. Each name, however, may apply to more than one man, as shown well by Kris Hocker in the case of Henry Hoover.10

(A) Woolrich Hoober (Ulrich Hoover): On 22 Jan 1733 Woolrick Hoober was given a warrant for 226 acres on Pequea Creek, returned 21 June 1749 for 290 acres and patented to Woolrick, recorded in warrant book A15 p. 224 and a survey was copied into book A46, p. 222. The copied survey shows it to have been dated 27 Dec 1745 on a warrant dated 22 Jan 1733 and it also describes it as 290 acres belonging to Woolrich Hoover and located in Warwick Township. One bordering tract (copied survey C76, p. 63) is shown as warranted 23 May 1745 and surveyed for 99 acres on 6 Sep 1749. On the reverse it is marked "vacated for want of complyance &c and ordered to be Return'd for Ulrick Hoover by Warrt of the 21st of August 1751 & was accordingly Returned ye same day". The name Ulrick has been marked out and replaced with Jacob. Another bodering tract belonged to Jacob Hoober and the copied survey [D36, p. 277] shows two tracts of land with the first being for 174 acres warranted to Jacob on 22 Feb 1738 and the second for 69 acres warranted to Jacob on 9 July 1741 and added to his survey on 13 May 1743. This survey reported a neghboring tract as belonging to Hans Hoober. [The same tract that had belonged to Ulrick Hoober, above.] Another neighboring survey dated "16th 8br 1730" (Copied Survey Book D88, p. 130), describes this tract as belonging to John Ulrick Hoober. This is also true of Book A64, p. 211, dated 10 Apr 1734. So, Woolrick Hoober may have been John (Hans) Ulrich Hoover. Although fascinating, I am leaving this Warwick Township Hoover family unconnected for now.

Copied survey Book D88, p. 127, dated 20 Oct 1728, describes 226 acres on a branch of Pequea Creek in Lancaster County belonging to Woolrich Huber who was given a warrant to accept the survey on 19 7br [Sept] 1744. The adjacent owners were Jacob Hoober, John Dehoof, John Line and "vacant". Copied survey D88, p. 138 dated 10 May 1719, made for Hans Boyer, refers to this neighboring tract as Ulrich Hoover's land. Book D78, p. 4, dated 29 8br[Oct] 1728 calls D88, p. 127 vacant. Woolrick Hover died intestate and the land descended to his children, Jacob, Anna, wife of Henry Shank, Maria, wife of Jacob Boyer, Elizabeth, Woolrick, Henry and John, all of Lancaster County. When the heirs of "Woolrick Hover" sold his land on 23 Jun 1759 it was described as 226 acres which was patented to him on 20 Sep 174411 and was then in Conestoga Township. The deed released the property to the son, John Hover.12 Book A83, p. 245 dated 14 Oct 1760, refers to neighbor "Ulrich" Hoover. Book B37, p. 235, dated 16 June 1761, refers to D88, p. 127 as John Huber's land in Conestoga Township. Book B4, p. 28 and Book C159, p. 287, both dated 23 Apr 1806 refer to the border with "lands late of William Hoover". On these surveys, many references to other copied surveys are not contemporary although the land name or description usually is.

(B) Jacob Hoober: On 24 Jan 1733 Jacob Hoober was given a warrant for 210 acres on a branch of Pequea Creek with no record of return or survey in the Warrantee Register for Lancaster County (see p. 85). However, Copied Survey Book D88, p. 135, does describe 210 acres on Pequea Creek as surveyed unto Jacob Hoober on 28 Jan 1733 based on a warrant dated 24 Jan 1733. Although a John Taylor had mistakenly requested and obtained a warrant for this land, Jacob Hoober had already purchased the right to 210 acres from Martin Kendrick and John Herr who had had 5000 acres granted to them. The Pequea Township Warrantee Map locates this tract and describes it as warranted to Martin Kendrick on 22 Nov 1717, surveyed 24 Jan 1733, and patented to John Jacob Hoober 22 Oct 173613. According to the Pequea Township Warrantee Map, the neighbors for the survey copied to Book D88, p. 135 are: D88-139, C58-90, C185-218, D82-15, and D82-48. West Lampeter adds (nearby) a 24 Jan 1733 warrant to Henry Hoober that was patented to Joseph Bosler (Copied Survey Book C77, p. 249). The Providence Township Warrantee Map adds B8-89, C67-217 and C76-15.
In chronological order by survey date these are:
D82-15: 4 Jun 1718 to Michael Shank, 250 acres. 144 acres sold to Henry Hoober. Refers to neighbor Jacob Hoover.
D82-48: 4 Jun 1718 to Michael Shank, 250 acres. 106 acres sold to Jacob Good. Refers to neighboring Jacob Hoover's lands.
D88-139: 20th 8br 1729 to Samuel Boyer, 115 acres. This shows the name of Jacob Hoober on neighboring line
C76-15: 10 Nov 1731 to Jacob Good, 68 acres. This shows the name ofJ acob Hoover on neighboring line.
C58-90: 27 Jan 1733 to Jacob Goughnour, 105 acres. The bordering land across Pequea Creek is not named
C67-217: 21 Feb 1743 to Jacob Huber, 47 1/2 acres. "borders on Jacob Huber's other land"
B8-89: 14 Mar 1743 to Samuel Boyers, 79 acres. The border detail is not shown.
C185-218: 24 Apr 1759 to John Smith, 167 1/2 acres. This borders on Jacob "Hoyer's other land" with "other" struck out

There is another tract of Hoover land that seems to have been surveyed at least three times. In D88-140, it is one of four tracts surveyed "12th of 9br 1720" on the right of Kendrick and Herr containing 81 acres and 5 poles belonging to Jacob Hoober. Compared to later surveys, the boundaries are simple and the area reduced. On B8-89, it is described as 110 acres, surveyed 30 March 1738, belonging to John Hoover. On D82-19, it is described as 105 acres, surveyed 12 May 1719 on the right of Kendrick and Herr for Barbara, widow of Jacob Hoover, with a warrant to accept the survey given to John Hoober on 10th "7br" 1744. It is also mentioned as the neighboring "widow Hoober's Land" on survey D88-138, made 10th May 1715 for Hans Boyer. (This seems too early to mention widow Hoober, but this survey was not returned until 23 Nov 1739.) The tract is also reported on the warrantee township maps for Pequea (from D82-19) and for Providence (also from D82-19, wrongly given at one point as D88-19) where it is shown as 105 acres warranted to Martin Kendrick on 22 Nov 1717, surveyed 12 May 1719, and patented to John Hoover on 2 Oct 1744.
(C) Henry Hoober: On 24 Jan 1733 Henry Hoober was given a warrant for 160 acres on a branch of Pequea Creek, returned 28 March 1810 for 86 acres, 40 perches, but patented to Joseph Bosler.14 (Also see Copied Survey Book C77, p. 249) This warrant may have been used more than one time. Let's examine a set of five contiguous tracts associated with the name Henry Hoober. These are the tracts marked B1-B5 on Kris Hocker's map used above. They may also be viewed on the Warrantee Township maps for West Lampeter, Strasburg, Providence and/or Pequea Townships. These tracts are bounded, easterly, by a 3584 acre survey for Amos Stretel and westerly, in part, by the lands of Jacob Hoober discussed above. In chronological order by survey date, they are:
C76-15 (B4): Surveyed for Jacob Good on 10 Nov 1731, 68 acres. Warranted to him 24 Jan 1733 for 75 acres but, "he not complying with the conditions", warrant granted to Henry Hoober 14 Apr 1740. At the time of this survey, the neighboring tract to the north already belonged to Good, the one to the west belonged to Jacob Hoover, and the one to the south of this one was vacant (later surveyed as A46-77).
D82-15 (B2): Surveyed for Henry Hoober on 12 Apr 1740. Two hundred acres had been warranted to Michael Shank on 27 "7ber" 1717 and surveyed as 250 acres on 4 June 1718. Shank then sold this 144 acres to Henry Hoober and the other 106 acres to Jacob Good. At time of the survey, Jacob Hoober was the neighbor to the west, Henry Hoober to the north and Jacob Good to the south.
D82-48 (B3): Surveyed for Jacob Good on 12 Apr 1740. Two hundred acres had been warranted to Michael Shank on 27 "7br" 1717 and surveyed as 250 acres on 4 June 1718. Shank then sold this 106 acre portion to Jacob Good and the other 144 acres to Henry Hoober. The name on this tract is given as Henry Hoober, Jr. on the West Lampeter and Pequea Township Warrantee maps.
A46-77 (B5): Surveyed to Henry Hoober on 20 "10ber" 1744 by warrant dated 13 "9br" 1744, 171 acres. At the time of the survey, "Henry Hoober's old land" was to the north. On 15 Jan 1793, when neighboring tracts were surveyed (see C148-213 and C128-215), they referred to the "lands late of Henry Huber". On 7 Nov 1820, when a small piece to the northwest was surveyed (see D26-209), part of A46-77 was referred to as "Henry Hoober, now Simon Graft" and another part was marked "Adam Goughnour in right of Henry Huber".
C77-249 (B1 on Hocker's map): surveyed 3 Oct 1795 on warrant of 24 Jan 1733 to Henry Hoober, 86 1/4 acres, in Lampeter, Martic, and Strasburg Townships. Peter Rush was claiming this land in right of the Henry Hoober warrant, even though Frederick Doersh had a survey that included it and no survey had been made on the Hoober warrant. The 1795 survey refers to the tract to the south (D8-15) as belonging to Henry Hoover.
On 15 Apr 1740, Henry Hoover obtained patents to three contiguous tracts of land of 68 acres (Warrants A9, p. 178), 106 acres (warrants A10, p. 97) and 144 acres (warrants A9, p. 180) respectively. All three had previously been the property of Michael Shank.
Dale R. Shank describes these land transactions and places the land location in a modern setting:
Michael and his wife Mary, came to America, along with his father and his brothers and sisters, as part of the large group of 363 Mennonites who settled on Pequea Creek (pronounced PECKWAY) in Lancaster County in September of 1717.
Michael and Mary must have already been married and needing their own land when they arrived in Philadelphia, because he immediately made application to William Penn's Commissioners of Property for 200 acres. A warrant, now recorded in Harrisburg in Book D, Volume 82, at page 159, states that on 27th of September in 1717 Commissioners Richard Hill, Isaac Norris and James Logan granted Michael Shank the right to take up and have surveyed to himself "in or near the township of Strasburg the quanity of 200 acres of land that has not been already surveyed, nor appropriated, nor is seated by the Indians". Being required by the terms of Penn's warrant to settle on unoccupied land, Michael selected a tract on the banks of the Pequea Creek, only a short distance downstream from 530 acres of land that his father Christian and Benedict Brakebill had jointly bought from John Funk only two days earlier on September 25, 1717. Michael's land was surveyed out to him the following spring on June 4, 1718 by Issac Taylor. Although the Indian tribes had roamed this area for hundreds of years, Michael Shank thus became the first white man to ever live at this site. Taylor, Penn's surveyor, allowed Michael 250 acres
of land, it being the custom to allow additional acreage to the amount requested for the development of roads which, of course, were non-existent in those days. A plat of the land, showing Michael Shank's name may be found in the Pequea township map of early settlers which was prepared by the State of Pennsylvania in 1933.
For anyone interested in seeing this first homestead of our pioneer Michael Shank, it can be easily found today. it lies partly in Strasburg and partly in Providence townships (formerly old Martic twp). Another survey on April 12, 1740 and recorded at Harrisburg in Book D., Volume 82, page 15 shows that the north boundary of the 250 acre rectangular tract runs almost directly east and west and lies no more the 50 feet south of the spot where the Big Beaver (Beaver Dam) Creek empties into the Pequea. The land extends more the three fourths of a mile southward from this point. The present day crossroads community of Herrsville is located just off the northwest corner of the tract. About 200 yards south of the community, the rural Herrsville Road crosses Pequea Creek. Looking to the east from the bridge one can see what was once the land on which Michael Shank built his first rustic home in America. Although not proven, this is quite likely the birthplace of John Shank, one of Michael's older sons and our ancestor who will be discussed in a following article "John Shank (c1718-1791)".
Some light is shed on Michael's early life and circumstances on Pequea Creek by a deed, not made until April 7, 1740. The foregoing survey of 1740 would have been made in connection with the transaction. Many early deeds were never recorded or were lost and this 1740 deed was made in order to clarify the title to the land. The deed was made by Thomas Penn, Richard Penn and John Penn; all sons of William Penn; and it is recorded in Lancaster County Book A, Volume 9, page 180.15 It recites that Michael Shank paid them the sum of 14 pounds and 8 shillings for the before mentioned 250 acres and that he, on the 7th day of March in 1733, deeded the land to Henry Hoober and Jacob Good. Henry and Jacob by mutual consent, divided the land, with Henry receiving the northern part of 144 acres and Jacob receiving the remaining 106 acres on the south. You may notice on the chart following this article that Michael Shank's sons Henry and Christian, intermarried with their neighboring Hoober (Huber) [and] Good families. A fact which helps to explain the transaction.
Although Michael retained ownership in the Pequea Creek land for a good many years, he did not reside there for any great length of time. His desire to locate near his father and family, no doubt, led him to select the tract in the beginning. I visited the site in October 1981 and found it to be very hilly and by no stretch of the imagination can it be called good farm land. Today it is overgrown in parts and contains two small dairy farms.
Michael soon left the Pequea Creek area, moving about five miles northwest to Conestoga Creek. The 1725 Tax List of Lancaster Co. (then Chester Co.) shows there were two Michael Shanks in the county at that time. One of the two was our ancestor, listed as "Michael Shank of George Gray's place". In those early days, men often occupied and worked a tract of land for many years before receiving a valid and legal deed to it. In this case, Michael did not receive deeds to Gray's two places of tracts until 1740. As previously mentioned, in 1933 the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania had maps made of land ownership in these early days. The maps are put together by townships and the Pequea township map shows Michael Shank's name and the location of the land he first acquired in 1717, as well as the two tracts that he bought from George Gray in two deeds made in July and in August of 1740. As a matter of interest to Shank descendants, the Strasburg twp map which adjoins Pequea show the 530 acre John Funk land that Michael's father, Christian bought in partnership with Benedict Brakebill in 1717. So it is then, that three of our grandfathers, at one time or another lived in sight of Pequea Creek which meanders through their lands and the lands of Lancaster County.
Michael Shank lived on Conestoga Creek for some 35 years until his death in 1759. This second location of his land is even easier to find today than is the location of his first tract on Pequea Creek. There is recorded at Harrisburg, Pa in Book D, Volume 73, page 53 a survey of the first 84-1/2 acre tract Michael bought from George Gray in 1740. It is bounded on the south by "Kings Road". This is now a very busy highway, located in precisely the same location now as in 1740, but now known as "Long Lane". Traveling west on Long Lane about four miles south of the City of Lancaster, one comes to Leamon Lane which turns northward toward the town of Millersville. This intersection marks the southeast corner of Michael Shank's two tracts which extend all the way north to Conestoga Creek.

One Henry Hoover's will (made 1757, probated 1758) named no wife, but left his estate to his son John and his daughter Elizabeth Boyers and mentioned his friend Henry Huber.17

Although Lancaster County was formed in 1729, available county tax records do not begin until 1751.18 In 1751, the only Hoovers on the Martic tax list19 were Jacob and John Hoover [A Henry is included by Hocker], but in 1754 there was another Jacob and a Henry, and in 1756 there were three Jacob Hoovers, a John, a William and a Henry. In 1757 one Jacob Hoover was "Senior". In 1758, one Jacob Hoover was a weaver and one (of three) was "the Bigg". William and one Henry are missing but a John has appeared. In 1759 Jacob Hoover's widow is listed. He had died in 1759 and had sons Jacob, Mathias, John, Martin, Christian -- some of his children were married but not all.
"These Hoover families (4~5 families) have been referred to as the Byerland Hoovers because of their proximity to the Byerland Meeting house in Martic Township. They lived in southeastern Conestoga Township (now Pequea Township) and northwestern Martic Township (now Providence Township). The original settlers included Ulrich Huber (ca 1703—1757), Jacob Huber (ca 1698—bef 23 Nov 1739), Henry Huber (bef 1712—1758), Henry Huber (bef 1719—1767/69), and Jacob Huber (ca 1698—1759), son of Hans Huber of Earl Township."20
The 1779 tax list of Earl Township, Lancaster County, PA, shows a Martin Hoover twice and that of Strasburg Township shows a Jacob Hoover twice. A Jacob Huber is also listed in Cocalico Twp. (1779) and in Lancaster Borough (1781).21

The 1787 Martic list contains Jacob Hoover "single [perhaps this says Senior], Jacob Hoover "hemp [hill]", Jacob Hoover, John Hoover, John Hoover "B C", John Hoover "junr", Christian and Petter Hoover's land, Christian Hoover and Hendry Hoover.
In 1789, Jacob Hoover's widow appears on the list as well as Christian B.C., John little, Henry, John jr., Christian and Peters Land, Jacob -?-, and Christian jnr. The 1790 list shows: Jacob's widow taxed £0-6s-8p; Christian B. C. 0-12-4; Jno. Little 0-7-10; Henry 0-1-4; John Jr. 0-3-8; Christian and Peter's land 0-9-4; Jacob hemp 1-6-0; amd Christian Senr 0-12-0. In 1792, we have: widow Hoover, Christian Hoover B.C., John Hoover little, Hendry Hoover, John Junr, Christian & Peter, Jacob Jun., Christian "Conestoga", Jacob "Hemphill", and Christian Sen.
The federal census of 1790 shows: page 56, Christn Huber 1 - 2- -, Christian Huber 1 - 2 - -; p. 61 Christ Huber 2 1 1 - -; p. 64: Jacob Huber 2 2 5 - -, widow Huber 3 1 2 - -, John Huber Senr 2 - 2 - -, John Huber Junr 1 3 6 - -, and Henry Huber 1 4 3- -. 22
The Hoovers on the lists (one list for property, another for tax) in 1793 were:
Christian Hover “B. C." 140 acres, 2 horses, 3 cows, Tax: 1£-2-6
[His name should be John as indicated on other lists and on the summary list for 1793 where the given name Christian is crossed out and replaced by John. The indicator B. C. is attached to him for years in the lists.]
John Hover “Littell” 100 acres 2 horses 4 cows, 0£-12-8
Hendry (Henry on the tax list) Hover -- acres, 2 horses, 2 cows. -£-3-9
John Hover “Juner” 100 acres, 1 horse, 2 cows, 0£-7-9
Christian Hover Land 100 acres. 10£-3-9
-----[Some intervening, non-Hoover, names appear here. The listing is grouped by first letter of the surname (all H’s together) but there may have been two groups of Hoovers in Martic, separated by geography or family]----
Christian Hover 57 (perhaps 51) acres, 2 horses, 2 cows, 0£-10-0
Petter (Peeter on tax list) Hover 57 (perhaps 51) acres, 1 horse, 2 cows. 0£-9-0
Jacob Hover Juner, 2 cows, 0£-14-0
Hendry Hover “frod Towne?” (Henry Hover Frog Town on tax list), --acres, 2 horses, 2 cows,-£-3-6
Jacob Hoover “Hemp Mill” (Senior? on tax list) 290 acres, 4 horses, 6 cows, 1 mill, 1£-2-6
[Hemp Mill has been marked out and replaced by Senor in the summary list]
Christian Hover Senr(?) 160 acres, 1 horse, 2 cows, 1£-2-6

The next tax list from Martick (1796) shows:
widow Hoober 15 acres, 1 house, 0 barn, 1 horn cattle, 100 value (her heirs appear in 1801)
John Hoober (B C) 140 acres, 2 houses, 1 barn, 1 blind mare, 2 horned catttle, 1000 value (his widow appears in 1809)
John Hoober (Little) & Son Trade: B. Smith, 100 acres, 1 house, 1 barn, 2 horses, 4 horned cattle, 1600 value
Henry Hoober 2 horses, 2 horned cattle, 125 value
Henry Hooober Jr. 90 acres, 1 house, 1 barn, 2 horses, 2 horned cattle, 275 value
John Hoover Jr, Weaver, 100 acres, 1 house, 1 barn, 2 horses, 2 horned cattle, 300 value
Christian Hoober 51 acres, 1 house, 1 barn, 2 horses, 2 horned cattle, 325 value
Peter Hoober, 51 acres, 1 house, 1 barn, 2 horses, 2 horned cattle, 325 value
Jacob Hoober Senr, 97 acres, 1 house, 1 barn, 2 horses, 5 horned cattle,550 value
Christian Hoober Senr 80 acres, 1 house, 1 barn, 1 horse, 2 horned cattle, 500 value
Christian Hoober, Jr. 1 horse, 2 horned cattle, 75 value
Martin Hoober 130 acres, 1 house, 1 barn, 2 horses, 2 horned cattle, 600 value
Abraham Hoober 10 acres bottom, 38 acres hill, 250 value
Freemen (i.e. at least age 21 and single): Martin Hoover, House Carpenter

The 1797-98 list is the same except Abraham Hoober is missing.
There appears to be no 1798 federal direct tax list for Martic Township.
The 1799 list is the same except that Peter Hoover is now missing, Jacob Hoober, Senr and Christian Hoober, Jr. are missing and Abraham Hoober's land is listed.
Widow Hoober is not in the 1800 tax list, and "Martan Hover", joyner is no longer a freeman (i.e. he was married). The others listed are: John Hoober, mason; John Hoober, farmer; Henry Hoober, farmer; Henry Hoober, Junr, farmer; John Hoober, Weaver; Christian Hoober, Snr., farmer; Peter Hoober, farmer; Jacob Hoober, Snr, farmer; Christian Hoober, Jr., farmer; and Martan Hoober, farmer.19 The 1800 census, however, does show widow Hoober who was over 45 years old.
WARNING: I HAVE NO DIRECT EVIDENCE, OTHER THAN THE LAND, OF A LINK TO "MY" MARTIN HOOVER but Kris Hocker has shared a careful analysis of a Henry Hoover who appears to be a prime candidate for the lead postion in this pedigree.
"Surname Saturday: Henry Huber Family 1 Jan 2011
"There were two Henry Hubers living near Pequea and Beaver Creeks in the Martic/Conestoga/ Strasburg/Lampeter township area in the mid-to-late 1700s.1 This post is about the family of the Henry Huber who married Catharine Good, daughter of Jacob Good.
"Jacob Good patented 106 acres on a branch of Beaver Creek in Martic Township (now Providence), Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in the right of Michael Shank on 12 Apr 1740. (see B3 on map)2 He warranted another tract of 75 acres, also on Beaver Creek, on 24 Jan 1733.3 He did not comply with the conditions of the warrant and 68 acres were warranted to Henry Hoober on 14 Apr 1740. (see B4 on map)4 Both of these tracts are shown as being patented on 15 Apr 1740 to Henry Hoober on the Providence Township Warrantee Map. "Jacob Good wrote his last will & testament on 12 Sep 1739; it was proved 22 Jan 1741. In it he mentions his wife Barbara, brothers Peter and John, sisters Feronica Nisley, Margaret Metz, Ann Strum, and son-in-law Henry Hoover.5
"Henry Hoover also patented a tract of 171 acres in Martic Township (now Providence) on 13 Nov 1744. (see B5 on map)6
"Assuming he was at least 21 years of age in 1740 when he patented land, Henry was born ca 1719, quite likely before. He married Catharine Good sometime before her father wrote his will in 1739, possibly before 1736. He may be the “loving friend…Henry Huber” named in the 1757 last will & testament of Henry Huber, who owned the adjoining property. (see B1 and B2 on map)7 He was also likely the “loving friend Henry Hoover” appointed by neighbor Johan Jacob Hoover as an executor of his will along with Jacob’s son John and Martin. (see A1, A2, A3 on map)8
" Henry and Catharine (Good) Hoover had at least 3 children:

" i. Jacob Huber, born bef. 1736 and died bet. 13 Mar and 9 Jun 1788, Martic Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.9,10,11 Jacob married Barbara (___) before 1764. His will names his six children, as follows:
" 1. Henry Huber, born ca 1764, possibly the Henry Huber who married Anna Margaretta Boyer, daughter of Henry & Elizabeth (___) Boyer.
" 2 Jacob Huber Jr., born ca 176612
"3. Barbara Huber, born ca 176813
"4. Christian Huber, born ca 1771-177414
"5. John Huber, born ca 1771-177415
"6. Martin Huber, born ca 1774 (aged 16 by 25 Aug 1790)16
"ii. John Huber, born bef. 1746 and died bet. 19 Apr 1794 and 21 Apr 1810, Martic Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania 17 John married Mary (___) before 1770.
"1. John Huber Jr.18
"2. Mary Huber, born bef. 1786, married Peter Huber, son of John and Barbara (___) Huber, grandson of Jacob and Barbara (___) Huber of Martic Township.19, 20
"3. Barbara Huber, born ca 1770-1780 and died bef. 16 Jun 1841, never married21, 22
"4. Christina Huber, born ca 1770-1780, never married23, 24
"5. Esther Huber, born bef 1802 and died 15 Mar 1832, never married25, 26
"6. Abraham Huber, married Mary (___)27
"7. Ann Huber, died before 1 Jan 1828, never married28
"8. Susanna Huber, born ca 1790-1794, never married29, 30
"9. Elizabeth Huber, born ca 1790-1794, married Henry Krieg sometime bet. 1825 and 3 Mar 183431, 32, 33
" iii. Daughter Huber (possibly Barbara), married Jacob Huber.34 This Jacob may be Jacob Huber Jr., son of Johan Jacob and Anna (___) Huber, grandson of Hans Huber of Earl Township. Johan Jacob and Henry Hoover were neighbors and, presumably, friends.

Jacob Hoover was the son of Martin Hoover and Maria Eshleman.
He was dead when his father's will was written in 1854. He had two children, Jacob and Elizabeth. Liebegott says that this Jacob Hoover married Susanna Shadle but a Jacob W. Hoover (with wife Susanna Shadel) is mentioned in a history of Blair County, Pennsylvania, which says he was about 18 months old when his father died and that his mother later married a Mr. Brown.1 If so, he was not the one in Martin Hoover's will. Jacob W. Hoover [a Civil War Soldier who died in 1891 and m. (1) a Miss Rice and had a daughter Maria and married (2) Susanna Shadel, dau. of John, and had (among others): Levi, b. 1861, who married Mary J. Strayer in 1897; Jemima who married William G. Blair Hoover, born in 1871; Jacob W Hoover, born in 1875; and Nancy Wyant] may have been the son of Martin Hoover’s deceased son Jacob.2

After youngest son Martin turned 16, Jacob Hoover's executors were able to sell Jacob's land. The deed, made on 25 Aug 1790, from John and Jacob Huber of Martick township, Lancaster County, to Adam Gochenauer of the same, was filed in Lancaster County Deed book 17, pp. 657 - 660. As executors of Jacob Huber, deceased, John and Jacob had been directed to sell Jacob's land after the youngest son, Martin, became 16. The property was described as "situate and being in the township of Martick aforesaid, bounded and described as follows, to wit, Beginning at a post in a line of John Huber's land, thence by the same West by South one hundred and sixty perches to a post, thence by Jacob Huber's land South by East thirty two perches to a hickory, South twenty four degrees East fifty eight perches to a chesnut tree, East by north fifty one perches to a post and South by east sixty six perches to a post thence by land of Ulrich Huber, East South East one hundred and twenty perches to a post, thence by John Huber's Land, north north west one hundred and thirty six perches to a post, East by north fifty six perches to a chesnut tree and north north East forty perches to a black oak standing at the side of Beaver Creek, thence down the said creek about five perches to a post, thence by Peter Musser's Land west by South fifty four perches to a post and north by west about fifty perches to the place of the beginning containing one hundred and thirty seven acres and one hundred and forty eight perches and the usual allowance on one hundred & twelve acres thereof (be the same more or less) [It being the same Tract of Land (all to six acres and twelve perches) which Henry Huber and Catharin his wife by three Indentures each dated the sixth day of June 1767 after reciting as therein is recited, and for the consideration therein mentioned, granted and confirmed unto the said Jacob Huber deceased his heirs and assigns for ever, as by the said Indentures may appear] And whereas the said Jacob Huber being so seized in fee of the Lands and Premises aforesaid, made his last Will and Testament in writing and thereof appointed the said John Huber and Jacob Huber, Executors, and in and by his last will and testament having given to his wife Twenty acres of Land adjoining Samuell Winter during her natural life, did order and impower his said Executors to sell all his estate, real and personal and that as soon as his youngest son Martin Huber should attain the age of sixteen years at public Sale and to make a good Deed or Title for the same to the purchaser, as in and by the said last Will and Testament duly proved & remaining in the Register's Office, at Lancaster may appear. And whereas the said Executors agreeable to the directions of the said last will and Testament, and after the said youngest Son Martin had attained the age of sixteen years, did at public vendue, sell the above described Tract of Land (being the residue of the real estate of the said deceased) with the Appurtenances unto the said Adam Gochnauer for the sum of Seven hundred and sixty one pounds Specie. Now this Indenture Witnesseth that the said John Huber and Jacob Huber for and in consideration of the said Sum of Seven Hundred and sixty one pounds, Specie, to them in hand well and truly paid, by the said Adam Gochenaur at and before the execution hereof ...."
Signed John Hoover, Jacob Hoover
Certified by a Justice of the Peace on 25 Aug 1792. Recorded 7 Oct 1819.2
The land sold to Adam Gochenauer in 1790 by the heirs of Jacob Hoover can be located on the township warrantee maps of Providence, Pequa, Strassburg and West Lampeter townships of Lancaster County.3 The land had been in Martic Township when the Hoovers acquired it. (Martic had been formed in 1729 when Lancaster County was created from Chester County.)
It is taken from land that had belonged to Henry Hoover. Starting on a patent made to Henry Hoover, 15 Apr 1740 (see copy in book D82 p. 48 for reference to original warrant made to Michael Shank), draw a new line, W by S 160 perches across this tract to meet the line with John Jacob Hoober, then S by E 32 perches to a hickory on a corner with another survey made for Jacob Good (C76 p. 15, 10 Nov 1721, but voided and resurveyed for Henry Hoober 14 Apr 1740. Continue along the border of this survey, jogging around the edge of a survey made for Martin Hoover, and along the line of Heny Hoober's survey.

Martin Hoover

M, (10 Aug 1776 - 28 Mar 1855)
Father*Jacob Hoover Sr. (before 1736-between 13 Mar 1788 and 9 Jun 1788)
Mother*Barbara (?)
Relationship3rd great-grandfather of Daniel Wayne Olds
Last Edited15 Dec 2018
Martin Hoover was born on 10 Aug 1776 at Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.1 He was the son of Jacob Hoover Sr. and Barbara (?). Martin Hoover married Maria Eshleman, daughter of Martin Eshleman and Elizabeth Groff, on 23 Apr 1799 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.2 Martin Hoover died on 28 Mar 1855 at Bedford County, Pennsylvania, at age 78.3 He was buried at Replogle Cemetery, Woodbury Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania.3
Several sources provide evidence for the date of Martin's birth. His tombstone gives the calculated date which I have used -- 10 Aug 1776.4 The dates published by Brumbaugh, which may also be the source used by Kathryn Hough and others may give a slightly earlier birth date. Martin's age of 76 from the 1850 census of Middle Woodberry Township, implies a birth date from 2 June 1773 through 1 June 1774 (based on the official census date), although his page was not recorded until 22 Oct 1850 and so might imply 23 Oct 1773 through 22 Oct 1774.
Chris Hocker had this to say in an e-mail of 1 May 2011: "Martin, b. 1772-1774 [<16 in 1788, <16 at time of census (as of 2 Aug 1790), >16 by 25 Aug 1790—so maybe born bet 2-25 Aug 1774, if calculated correctly & census is correct age bracket]".
This is based on the following: When Jacob Hoover wrote his will on 13 March 1788, his youngest son Martin was not yet 16, so was born after 13 March 1772. In 1790, widow Huber of Martic Township had 1 male under 16 in her household, possibly her youngest son, Martin, who was thus born after 2 Aug 1774. [2 Aug 1790 was the official date of the 1790 census.] Jacob Huber's executors, waiting until Martin was age 16, sold Jacob's real estate on 25 Aug 1790, implying that Martin's birth was before 25 Aug 1774.
While this conclusion does not agree with the year calculated from the tombstone, I have often found such disagreements between earlier and later records and I impressed that the MONTH of birth agrees. To me, this is further evidence that "our" Martin Hoover was the same as this Jacob's son.
According to Liebegott5, he was a son of a Jacob Hoover of Bedford County, Pennsylvania, who did name a son Martin in his will.6 Additional evidence is needed, especially in view of the fact that the names Jacob and Martin Hoover apply to several different men at this time. The Jacob of Bedford County was there long before “our” Martin arrived and others have claimed descent from his son Martin who appears to be different from our ancestor.

Another piece of evidence provides at least anecdotal support for connecting Martin Hoover to Jacob. Jacob Hoover, who "died March 13, 1788", is shown as "Great-Great-GreatGrandFather", the father of "Great-Great Grandfather" Martin Hoover, b. 1776, died 17 March 1855,7 in "Kathryn's Family History". This sheet also shows that Martin Hoover married Maria Eshleman but gives her dates as 1778 - 6 Oct. 18688. The author of this sheet of information was Kathryn (Hoover) Hough, b. 8 Dec. 1907, daughter of Levi Hoover, and granddaughter of Jacob Hoover who was a son of "our" Martin Hoover. The source of her information is still unknown, but this is a reference to the Jacob Hoover whose will was made in 1788.9
Our Martin Hoover’s first known appearance on the public record is on the 1796 tax list of Martic Township, Lancaster County, PA, where he appears among the freemen (single men, age 21 or more) as a House Carpenter. The most recent Martic Township list prior to that was for 1793 and this Martin Hoover does not appear. Thus, our Martin Hoover seems to have come of age in a community of Hoover families in Martick Township. There appears to be no 1798 direct federal tax list for Martic Township. Unfortunately the 1800 tax list apparently does not show property ownership but it lists: Martan Hober, Joyner; John Hoober, Mason; John Hoober, Farmer, Henry Hoober, Farmer, Henry Hoober, Junr, Farmer, John Hoober, Weaver & Farmer, Christian Hoober, Jnr, Farmer; Peter Hoober, Farmer; Jacob Hoober, Snr, Farmer; Christian Hoober, Jr, Farmer, Martan Hoober, Farmer.

The 1800 federal census shows:

Peter Hoober     1 - 1 - -      :: 4 - - 1 -

The 1810 census of Lancaster County includes at least three Martin Hoover/Hoober families.
Martin Hoover, Earl Township: 2,2,-,-,2 :: -,2,2,-,1
Martin Hoover, Martic Township: 1,1,1,1- :: 5,-,-,1,1
Martin Hoober, Martic Township: 3,2,-,1,- :: 1,1,-,1,-
In 1820, Martin Hoover of Manor Township is listed as
Martin Hoover, -,1,1,1,-,1 :: 3,1,1,1,-,
Our Martin Hoover seems to have come to Bedford County shortly after the 1820 census. Martin Hoover is on the 1822 tax list for Woodberry Township. His tax was $2.16 and that for Samuel Hoover was 41 cents while David Hoover was charged 6 cents.10 On 20 April 1829 when letters of administration on the estate of Jacob Hoover of Woodberry Township were granted to Henry Fluck, Martin Hoover and John Snider were sureties. 11
The 1830 census of Bedford County shows this Martin Hoover, age 50-60, with his wife, age 40-50, 1 boy age 5-10, 2 boys age 15-20, and two girls, age 10-15. In the 1840 census of South Woodberry Township, Martin Hoover is listed as age 60-70, with his wife, age 50-60, 1 female age 20-30, and 1 male age 15-20. By the time of the 1850 census, Martin, age 76, and Mary, age 71, were living alone in Middle Woodberry Township, near their son Rudolph. Another Martin Hoover, age 50, and wife Mary were living in the same township.

Martin Hoover made his will on 19 June 1854. It was probated 21 April 1855, and is filed in Bedford Co. Will Book 4, p. 153. It was signed Martin Hoover Sen. by his mark and witnessed by Edward Pearson and Joseph Keagy. Both witnesses appeared for probate in June, 1855.

" I Martin Hoover of the Township of Middle Woodberry County of Bedford and state of Pennsylvania, do make and publish this my last will and testament hereby revoking and making void all former wills by me at any tme heretofore made, I direct that my body be decently interred in the burying ground of the Mances Church in the Township aforesaid according to the rites and ceremonies of said Church, and that my funeral be conducted in a manner corresponding with my estate and situation in life, and as to such worldly estate as it has pleased God to intrust me with, I dispose of the same as follows, I direct that all my debts and funeral expenses be paid as soon after my decease as possible out of the first money that shall come into the hands of my Executors from any portion of my estate real or personal, also I order and direct that my loving wife Maria, shall have my frame dwelling house and stable with all the lots attached supposed to be six in number situate on the west side of the Turnpike road in the Town of Woodberry, known as the Diehl property, with all the household furniture now or may be in our possession, shall be and remain the absolute property of my beloved wife, if she shall be living at the time of my decease, and further I order that my Executors shall collect all rents interest on bonds notes &c as they come due &c on any claim that may come to their notice and pay the same annually to my beloved wife, and after the decease of dear wife, my estate shall be disposed of as follows, I give to my two grandchildren namely Jacob and Elizabeth, children of my son Jacob Hoover deceased, two hundred dollars each, and I give and bequeath to my beloved children, namely, Martin, Elizabeth, intermarried with David Boyers, Susanna, intermarried with Samuel Eshleman, Barbara, intermarried with Christian Hetrick, Anna, intermarried with Jacob Brown, Frances, intermarried with Samuel Brown, Mary, intermarried with Michael Fishel, Catherine, intermarried with Samuel Bosler and Rudolph Hoover, each heir share and share alike, considering my son Rudolph Hoover, having received one thousand dollars of his legacy already in pay of his farm. It is also my will that my wife in addition to the aforesaid shar have privilege of getting wood fuel &c of the barrens or ridge tract of land, and I do hereby make and ordain, my son Rudolph Hoover and Samuel Bosler, my son in law, sole Executors of this my last will and Testament -- In witness hereof, I Martin Hoover, the Testator have to this my will written on one sheet of paper set my hand and seal the nineteenth day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand and fify four -- The words two hundred dollars each was interlined before Signing."12

Martin Hoover died 28 March 1855, age 78 y., 7 m., 18 d. Maria, who was listed as age 88 in the 6 July 1870 census of Bedford County, died 6 Sept. 1870, age 89 y., 2 m., 19 d., and they are buried in the Replogle Cemetery, just north of Woodbury, in Bedford County, where their death dates and ages may be seen on their stones.

Martin and Mary Hoover had sold some land to their son Rudolph on 28 March 1854 which was mortgaged by Rudolph to Martin. After Martin's death, Rudolph sold some of that land and needed a clear title. In Deed Book AJ, pages 211-213, are recorded the quitclaims from the other heirs. They were: David Boyer and Elizabeth, his wife, of Bedford County; Christian Hetrick and Barbara, his wife, of Bedford County; Samuel Bassler and Catherine, his wife, of Blair County; Jacob Furry as attorney in fact for Jacob U. Brown and Anne his wife of Jefferson County, Kansas; Martin Hoover of Wayne County, Ohio; Samuel Eshleman and Susan, his wife, of Jefferson County, Iowa; Samuel Brown and Frances, his wife of the same county; Mary Fishel, widow, of the same county; the said Elizabeth Boyer, Barbara Hetrick, Catherine Bassler, Anne Brown, Martin Hoover, Susan Eshleman, Frances Brown and Mary Fishel being children and heirs of Martin Hoover, dec'd.

I am still seeking additional proof of the parentage of the Martin Hoover whose chronology I have updated below. Although this appears to point to a connection with a colony of Hoovers living in Martic Township, Lancaster County, PA, and this colony is mostly included in the Huber-Hoover History13, I have been unable to identify our line in that book.

The Liebegott papers contain an abstract of this will made at the Bedford County, Pennsylvania, courthouse in 1927 by Elvin R. Hoover and recopied Dec. 3, 1945 by Edward D. Kimes. This copy gives Martin Hoover (not Houser as in other notes) as Trustee and Jacob Price of Washington County, Maryland, as Executor. If this could be documented from the original estate papers, it would nearly eliminate "our" Martin Hoover from this Jacob's family as our Martin is not known to be in Bedford County this early., County Court House, Bedford County, Pennsylvania.
