"After finishing high school and the two years normal school course at the University of Nevada, Jessie launched out on her teaching career. She was given a country school in White Pine County in country more desolated than where she was raised, and as it had been at our ranch it was a one family school for one homesteader in the district with a family of six children. The schoolhouse was a half a mile from the homesteader's cabin, and there was a teacherage attached, forming an L-shaped building. Jessie wrote some very homesick letters, but she stayed with it. I realized it was a tough assignment for young girl of twenty, and thought it would be easier for her if she could live with the family instead of half a mile from anybody. ... She'd had a pretty tough assignment and I felt proud of her for having the fortitude to stay with it. But she'd had enough of school teaching for awhile, and she came back home and married her high school sweetheart."6

He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War.3
John Olds appeared on the census of 1790 at East Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut, as follows:
John Olds, 1 - 3 - -
John Olds, Jr., 2 2 3 - -
This may be John Old (b. 1724) and his son John Olds (b. 1753), but convincing proof is lacking.6
This news extract appears to refer to the same John Olds.
"MANCHESTER — - Time may be running out for the historic John Olds homestead, one of the oldest homes in town.
"A New York developer wants to tear down the large white farmhouse at the corner of Tolland Turnpike and Slater Road to make a "natural park-like setting" for residents of the nearby Waterford Commons apartment complex that the developer also owns.
"Built around 1776, the farmhouse was home to Olds, a farmer and Revolutionary War soldier who is often called "the father of Manchester" because he led the movement in the early 1800s to separate what was then known as Orford Parish from the town of East Hartford. He and other settlers succeeded, and Manchester was founded in 1823.
...
"In November, the house was placed on the State Register of Historic Places and last week was "approved for study" for the National Register of Historic Places. That is an important step, but it will still be many months before it will be considered for the national register, said David Bahlman, the deputy state historic preservation officer.
"Every effort should be made to the save the house, he said.
""It is a fine, fine, fine representation of the period," he said. "It's not a building that should be demolished."7"
An historic marker near his house in Manchester says
"John Olds, Esq. 1753 - 1833
"Born in Suffield, Conn. He lived for a time in Sheffield, Mass. He settled here in 1790. He was a farmer, soldier in the Revolution and was active in civic affairs, serving six terms as selectman in East Hartford. He was an early leader in the move to separate Orford Parish from that town."8
John Olds appeared on the census of 1810 at East Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut, as follows: John Olds with 1 male 16-25, 1 male 26-44, 1 male over 45, 1 female 26-44 and 2 females over 45.
If this is the John Olds (b. 1753, age ca. 57), the record suggests he may have had children.9
John Olds appeared on the census of 1830 at Manchester, Hartford County, Connecticut, as follows: he was living alone at age 70 - 80.10
By his age, this is an apparent match with a death notice published in the Connecticut Courant for 6-28-1831, saying: "DIED -- at Manchester, the 21st inst. John Olds, Esq., aged 78". This, however, means the historic marker quoted above has an error in his death date.11
"At a Court of Probate holden at Hartford, within and for the district of Hartford, on the 21st day of July, A. D. 1831.

"On motion of Simeon A. Spencer, Executor on the estate of John Olds, Esq., late of Manchester, within said district, deceased -- This Court doth decree that six months be allowed and limited for the creditors of said estate to exhibit their claims to said Executor, after public notice of this order shall have been given, by advertising the same in a Newspaper published in Hartford, and by posting up a copy thereof on a public sign-post in said Manchester.

Gowen says that this is the John Olds who appears in the Granville, New York, federal census records of 1790 - 1810.6
John Olds, who had been on the pension roll of Vermont from 6 Apr 1818 was transferred to New York beginning 4 March 1825.7 The final payment record show that John Olds whose Agency of Payment was Burlington, Vermont, under the Act of 1818, who received a payment in the 4th quarter of 1825, had died 10 March 1825. This seems to have been merely the date he was transferred to New York records.87
The following information is from his pension file (S43102, Conn., Continental, 21 pages):
John Olds, age 63, of Wells, Rutland County, Vermont, appeared before a judge there on 6 April 1818 to apply for his pension. He had enlisted at Ashford, Connecticut, in May, 1776, "in the Continental establishment" for one year but had served longer at the request of General Washington and re-enlisted in June 1777 for nine months. In his statement of 28 June 1820, he was age 65 and his wife Lucretia was age 70. He was given a pension on the roll of Vermont to commence on 6 Apr 1818 in the amount of $8/month. The first payment, with arrears of $183.69 and a semi-annual amount of $48, was made in Sep 1820. On 7 Feb 1825 when he appeared before a Justice of the Peace in Jefferson County, New York, he was living in Wilna, and requested that his pension be transferred to New York.
Daniel Olds of Painesville, Geauga County, Ohio, appeared before a Justice of the Peace there on 9 July 1819 and stated that John Olds had enlisted in May 1776 at Ashford, Connecticut, for one year. He was discharged on 14 May 1777 at Newark, New Jersey, and enlisted again the following June for nine months and was discharged the following winter. He had been in the battles of Trenton and Princeton in New Jersey and also White Plains "soon after the retreat out of New York". Daniel had enlisted at the same time and in the same companies.
On 15 July 1920, Della Farman (Mrs. V. A.) Blomgren of Kanawha, Iowa, wrote to the Clerk of the Pension Office to gather information for her DAR application and gave further information on her ancestor, John Olds. He was born in North Ashford, Conn., on 31 May 1757 and married (1) Dolly Clark and (2) Lucretia ________, b. 1750.9
E. B. Olds lists one child, John, for John and Lucretia Olds. In the copy used by Higginson Book Company to make reprints, this John Olds has been marked out by an unknown user. I take this as a hint there may be an error here. At least the connection must need additional proof. E. B. Olds says:
"John, born 1791; died November 21, 1875, Wilna, Jefferson Co., N. Y; married at Tolland, Mass., December 1816, Orphana Fowler; he was a Drum Major in the Conn. Militia, War of 1812; moved to Tolland, Mass. about 1814; afterwards lived in Wilna, N. Y."10,11 So, how is this John Olds connected?
