Nancy Malissa Scates married John Blackwell.1 Nancy Malissa Scates was born in Jan 1823.1 She died in 1904.1 She was buried at Broad River Baptist Cemetery, Harris, Rutherford County, North Carolina.2
I have made an attempt to collect documentation of the identity of the mother of Zachariah Matthew Blackwell, born 1866. His death certificate names his parents as John Blackwell and Eliza Scates, both natives of S. C. I have (so far) found the death records of two of his siblings -- Sarah Elizabeth Blackwell Couch, born 1863, whose parents were John Blackwell and ---- Skates; Nancy Blackwell Burgess, born 1864, whose parents were John Blackwell and Melissa ------. The best candidate to be "our" John Blackwell in the 1850 census is in Spartanburg County, age 37, with supposed wife Rebecca, age 27, and child Margaret, age 7, and is hard to claim. In 1860 John Blackwell of Rutherford County, North Carolina, age 37, born in S. C., with wife "Lissa", age 33. born in S. C. In 1870 John Blackwell of Rutherford County, age 50, born in S. C., had wife Nancy, age 41, b. S. C. In 1880, John Blackwell of Rutherford County, age 58, born S. C., had wife Nancy, 54, b. S. C. John then died in 1888 and Nancy can be found in 1900 as widow Nancy M. Blackwell, 77, b. S. C., and mother of Letta A. Smith, b. Aug 1855. Both John and Nancy are listed as buried at Broad River Baptist Church although no tombstone photos are available and there probably is no marker.
If "Eliza" Scates was ever part of the family, she was long gone before these children were born and I have concluded that "Eliza" is perhaps written for "Lissa" [Melissa] of the 1860 census and that the mother of all these children was Nancy Melissa Scates.
Nancy Malissa Blackwell and John Blackwell appeared on the census of 25 Jul 1860 at 2nd Broad District, Rutherford County, North Carolina, as follows:
     1425/1425 John Blackwell, 37, farmer, b. S. C.
      Lissa, 33, b. S. C.
      Calvin, 14, b. N. C.
      Angeline, 5, b. S. C.
      John, 9, b. N. C.
      Allen, 4, b. N. C.3
Nancy Malissa Blackwell and John Blackwell appeared on the census of 14 Jul 1870 at P.O. Moorsboro, Hickory Grub Township, Rutherford County, North Carolina, as follows:
     106/101 Blackwell, John, 50, farming, b. S. C., cannot read or write
      , Nancy, 44, keeping house, b. S. C., cannot read or write
      , John, 19, farm laborer, b. S. C., cannot read or write
      , Letty, 16, at home, b. N. C., cannot read or write
      , Allen, 14, at home, b. N. C.
      , William, 8, b. N. C.
      , Elizabeth, 6, b. N. C.
      , Mathew, 3, b. N. C.
      , Nancy, 1, b. N. C.4
Nancy Malissa Blackwell and John Blackwell appeared on the census of 25 Jun 1880 at Cherokee Township, Spartanburg County, South Carolina, as follows:
     510/510 Blackwell, John, 58, married, farmer, cannot read or write, b. S. C., father b. S. C., mother b. N. C.
, Nancy, 54, wife, [not marked married], keeping house, cannot read or write, b. S. C., father b. VA, mother b. S. C.
      , Elizabeth, 15, dau., at home, cannot read or write, b. N. C., parents b. S. C.
      , Mathew, 11, son, farm laborer, cannot read or write, b. N. C., parents b. S. C.
      , Nancy, 9, dau., b. N. C., parents b. S. C.5
Nancy Malissa Blackwell appeared on the census of Jun 1900 at Cherokee Township, Spartanburg, South Carolina, as follows:
      Blackwell, Nancy M., mother-in-law, b. Jan. 1823, age 77, b. S. C., parents b. S. C.
This is in the family of Govan Smith, b. Aug 1858, and wife Letta A. Smith, Aug 1855. They had been married 25 years and Letta had had 6 children with 5 still living, all of whom were still at home. Thus, Letta A. Smith must have been the Lettie Blackwell previously listed in the family of John and Nancy Blackwell.6

John Schindler was born in Dec 1819 at Germany.2 He married Helen Mar Olds, daughter of Otia Olds and Sarah M. Chamberlain, c 1866.1,3
John Schindler appeared on the census of 5 Sep 1870 at Erie County, New York, as follows:
563/535 Shindler, John, 48, farmer, b. Baden, parents of foreign birth
Sommers, Josephine, 30, housekeeper, b. Germany, parents of foreign birth
Shindler, Francis E., 4, b. New York, parents of foreign birth
[This household includes several young men as workers.].4
John Schindler and Helen Mar Schindler appeared on the census of 15 Jun 1880 at Aurora, Erie, New York, as follows:
253/264 Shindler, John, 60, farmer, b. Baden, parents b. Baden
      , Helen, 35, wife, keeps house, b. N. Y., father b. N. Y., mother b. VT
      , Francis E., 13, dau., at school, b. N. Y., father b. Baden, mother b. N. Y.
      , John, Jr., 4, son, b. N. Y., father b. Baden, mother b. N. Y.
      , Sarah, 2, dau., b. N. Y., father b. Baden, mother b. N. Y.
[Listed just before the family of Otia Olds.]5
Frances E. was born about the same time that John and Helen are supposed to have been married. However, perhaps their marriage was later. Helen was still listed in her father's family in 1870 and her known children were later. The 1870 census says Frances E. was born to foreign born parents (i. e. not Helen) although this changed in 1880. Furthermore, the 1900 census only reports three children for Helen which E. B. Olds also reports.6
John Schindler and Helen Mar Schindler appeared on the census of 26 Jun 1900 at Aurora Township, Erie County, New York, as follows:
330/340 Shindler, John, head, b. Dec. 1819, 80, marr. 34 yrs, b. Germany, came to US in 1836, in US 63 years, naturalized, farmer
      , Helen, wife, b. June 1842, age 57, marr. 34 yrs, 3 children, 3 living, b. NY, father b. NY, mother b. VT
      , Cyrus, son, b. June 1883, 16, b. NY, father b. Germany, mother b. NY, farm laborer.2
A small stone marker in the Davis Cemetery, Elma, Erie County, New York, bearing the inscription "John/ Schindler/ 1819 - 1904" is at least consistent with the John Schindler who married Helen Olds.7

I may have given this to brother John.

In December, 1962, Anna Olds told me how she and Bryant Olds first met. The Schmidts had a young horse that they were teaching to pull a cart in single harness. When this horse decided they had gone far enough from home, she would stop and had to be lead to start again. It was necessary to mount the moving cart from the rear. One day when Anna was doing ths (with her sister Ida in the cart), Bryant Olds came by and said "Do you girls need any help?" Anna said "No". That was her future husband.
The Wyanet Bugle of 3 Nov. 1893 contains the following:
          “WEDDED”
“Miss Anna Schmidt was married to Bryant Olds, Wednesday, November 1st, at high noon, at the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Schmidt, north of town. Rev. Bannon, of Princeton, performed the marriage ceremony. Miss Emma Hess, of Chicago, cousin of the bride, and Mr. Guy Olds, brother of the groom, were the attendants. The bride wore a lovely pink silk, and the groom wore the conventional black. There were about fifty guests present, all relatives, and a royal dinner was served. Many presents were received. The worthy young couple occupy the home prepared by the groom, and everything points to a happy life for them, which they deserve.”

Under "North Wyanet" on the same page appears the following note:
"A serenading party for Anna and Bryant came about four o'clock p.m. on Wednesday in the shape of a thunder storm, and delighted the whole neighborhood for about twenty minutes, when all of a sudden it took flight north-east and we got no rain."5
“Last Saturday morning lightning struck Bryant Old’s [sic] home, knocking off the chimney and going through the south side and through the west side tearing off siding and doing internal injuries to the plastering. Mrs. Olds and baby had a very narrow escape as they were alone in the house at the time; they got quite a shaking up."6
               AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
(no date, unfinished)
Anna Schmidt Olds
I am writing these lines, thinking I might be helping out after I am gone. it has happened to me great many times, since my Parents are not here to ask them about things. just an idea of what my life has been. if I were given the chance to live it over again, I would be satisfied and happy to live it just as it was. I was born Nov. 18, 1874 north and west of Depue in Bureau Co. Illinois, in a Log Cabin one room. I remember my mother telling me about finding a snake in the cradle with me, of grabbing me up and running oiut side calling Father to kill the snake. we lived there till I was about 2 years old when the folks built a new house which in those days was considered a nice house. it is still standing, but the road has been rerouted therefore its not visable from the road, we lived there till I was six years old when we moved to Chicago. Sister Ida was born, was just an Infant when we moved to Chicago. (I remember when she was born I was at the neighbors they told me I had a little sister and didn’t I want to go home but I didn’t want to go I liked it better in this home John Lang w[h]ere there were children to play with. I remember them taking me home on horseback I rode in front of the rider) Pa, and I had maleria fever a lot while we lived on this Farm was one reason for selling out. both Pa and Ma (as we called them) worked very hard had little enjoyment, we used to go to church in a Lumber wagon. I was Baptized on Christmas day 1874 in the church on the Hill near Hollowayville, Ill. still have the dress I was baptized in a long dress about 2 yards long. I had it on Milford once just so I could say he had had a Baby dress of mine on. we only lived in Chicago about a year in a basement flat of my Aunts then (Mrs. Hess) (Emma Gundlachs mother) Pa bought a Farm near Fontanelle Iowa, Adair Co. while we lived in Chicago then (714 N. Halsted) number is changed but house still stands N. of N. Ave. west side of street. I went to German school.) we moved to Fontanelle some time in the winter. (one of the things I would like to ask my folks when this was) stopAnna Maria Sophia Schmidted with some folks by name of Henry Ahnen untill our place was vacant. Pa and Ma worked very hard I was old enough too to work and take care of the other children. didnt have much time for play. started to school in a Farm house turned into a school room. I couldn’t speak english but soon learned. winter time I didn’t attend school much on account of cold weather and when there was work I didnt get to go either work came first. finally they built a new school house 1 ½ miles to walk. used to have Fall, winter, and Spring terms. the folks built the place all over house a new barn. (I remember the barn raising as they use to call it) Ma was a very good woman was very popular with neighbors, used to be called to take of Mothers and Babies often no Doctor. we moved to Illinois Wyanet in Sept. Pa went with the car of horses and tools also house hold good. while Ma and the children went on the train Will, Emm, and Johnny were born in Iowa. Pa bought a Farm north of Wyanet, which was my home until I was married. (and now left to Emma and I in Pa’s will) after landing here from Iowa, grandpa Schmidt met us at the Depot. he was living with Aunt Minnie Scharff we stayed there till our goods came moved into a vacant house of Scharffs a couple of months then we moved to Pa’s other sister a widow Mrs.Freda Fink. the tenant she had on the place left. so we moved in and took care of it and husked the corn we were there that winter by March 1st our place was vacant so we moved on it I was 13 years old now. went to school there till the next winter when I was sent to german confirmation school Rev. Drexel was our teacher, stayed and boarded with Aunt Ricka Fink. was confirmed April 14 then the following June I went to work out as they called it. (to find out how other people lived) as the folks used to say. I worked for Mrs. Phillip Wolfersberger in Princeton for $11.50 a week I was very home sick the later part of the summer I was home again. then that fall I went back to Mrs. Wolfersbergers. I was there then till the following summer Ma needed me at home they built the house. the following Jan. 1892 I went to Chicago to work the Fink girls used to tell me of good wages they made and of good times they had. (while in Princeton I met a young man by the name of Herma Smith I went with him till I went to Chicago) I worked in Chicago on the N. side, but didn’t like it very well so in April 1892 the folks sent for me to come home Ma wasn’t very well. then I staid at home with the exception of helping the neighbors for 50 ct. a day. we now had a road cart with a double seat we could drive a single horse. one day I hitched up a young horse to the cart started for Wyanet. Ida and I would lead Kate the horse a ways to let her know what was expected of her then I would get in the cart while she was going. that’s what I was doing when a young man in a cart stopped and asked “are you having trouble” I explained to him that our horse wasnt broke to drive single. that was the young man I later married. we met again in Wyanet at a dance a girl visiting me from Chicago (Inga Thompson) he asked me and my Friend to go for a ride next day sunday. so on sunday he came dressed (like a dude) as they used to say had a nice horse and buggie. we went from home to Wyanet then to Providence then to Tiskilwa to Princeton and home had a nice day. from then on we went together. (Herma was out) were together every Wednesday night and Sundays, I met the Olds family and I guess I suited them. used to be invited there to sunday dinner the Olds girls used to be out to our house, we went together and were married at high noon on Nov. 1st 1893 the folks had a wedding for us 50 relatives both side of the family Emma Hess and Guy Olds stood up with us Rev. Banning married us went to house keeping in the house N. of Mrs. Susan Olds. it was then a 1 story 4 room house. Bryant was very ambitious he bought an old house near my home n of the school house used to be owned by Harrington paid $50. for it tore it down and used it to build the house where John Olds died in. Bryant worked on that all winter with Mr. Chet Allen’s help by March it was ready to move in there was still a lot of work to do yet. such as painting and papering. We were very happy. Bryant came home under the influence of liquer. I didn’t mind then but he liked it and it grew on him (to our sorrow) his Father was very much oposed to it. also his mother. he worked for his Father in the Hardware, in Dec. 21st 1894 our first Baby was born. (we came near both not being here) had Dr. Shoemaker and Dr. Palmer from Princeton. we were very happy with our Baby. Bryant and I both loved children. the Winter of 1895 Bryant wanted to do something for himself so bought a Pump business with Henry Schultz (Holloway Pump and Windmill) that was a bad change.

This travel log of one of her trips to western U.S. and Mexico was kept by Anna S. Olds on 11 pages of a pocket notebook. It does not name the year but that is shown to be 1934 when comparing the dates and days of week with a perpetual calendar and the known family timeline. Since she used historic Route 66, I found the website http://www.historic66.com/ very useful in following along and it helped me read the town names. She travelled with her son Austin, his wife Pearl, and her other daughter-in-law Myrle.

Anna Olds lived as a widow for 37 years in Chicago and Wyanet, Illinois. By the time of her death in 1966, the style of obituaries had changed from that used for so many of the earlier members of this family record.
     "Death Takes Mrs. Anna Olds
"WYANET -- Mrs. Anna Olds, 92, life long resident of the Wyanet community, died at her home at 4:50 p.m. Sunday after a three year illness.
"Mrs. Olds was born Nov. 18, 1874, in a log cabin at Searles Ridge, the daughter of William and Wilhelmine Hopp Schmidt.      Another obituary for Anna states:
     "Mrs. Anna Olds

"Pallbearers were Eugene Cook, Henry Frielingdorf, Cecil Wilson, John Scharff, Ronald Peterson and Wendell Morse."16
When Anna Olds' personal items were divided, Doris Olds kept a list of things that went to Doris and Bob ("us") and to Austin and Pearl. Among these, some are still [2009] recognizable heirlooms, namely: "pictures or clippings -- few -- included marriage license, our pictures"; "sewing basket (U. George)"; "pipe (John)" [Anna's grandfather Schmidt had smoked a meerschaum pipe and died of mouth cancer. That was one reason that John and I, as boys, were not allowed to play with it. -- DWO]; "Bible (Dan)" [The Wilhem and Wilhelmina Schmdt family Bible]; "Bryant picture" [a framed collage showing the Bryant brothers]; "a cake stand" [possible the one that belonged to Aunt Minnie Scharff]; "1 master salt" [not identified in 2009]; "Godeys books (parts of 4)"; "Typed records of Mother's trips". One item in Pearl's list is "Grandmother Olds's ?? picture & frame". The identity of the lady portrayed is still not certain but "people say" it hung in the Schmidt house in Princeton although it looks somewhat like Anna Belle Krimmel Olds. Another item for Pearl was "Guy M. Olds picture in frame". I also eventually got both pictures.17
