James R. Derby was born on 26 Aug 1826 at New York.1 He married Lucy Ann Olds, daughter of Abel Olds and Annie Thurston, on 25 Jan 1851 at Michigan.1,2 James R. Derby died c 1906 at Yamhill County, Oregon.3
James R. Derby "was born in New York, Aug. 26, 1826, the son of John and Fanny (Edwards) Derby, both also natives of New York. They brought up to years of maturity all but one of their ten children. Only two of the family now survive, William and James R.
"The subject of this sketch was reared to farm work. January 25, 1851, he married Miss Lucy Olds, a native of Michigan, and a daughter of Abel Olds. March 25, 1852, they started on the long journey to distant Oregon, and found home here, in the then new territory. Crossing into Missouri, June 3, they arrived at the Dalles during the last days of October. From there they came in open boats to Portland, arriving November 25. The men took turns in walking on the banks, pulling the boats. Thus their journey had occupied eight months. In the company in which they came there was considerable mountain fever and a number of deaths, but this family arrived in safety.
"During the succeeding fall (1853) Mr. Derby located on 320 acres of land six miles north of La Fayette. ...
"Mr. Derby had four [sic -- listing six but Joseph Garrison was a son-in-law] children: Eliza Jane, who was born at the Dalles on the journey to Oregon; Joseph Garrison, who resides in Idaho; Jerome A., a farmer residing near his parents; William P., resident in Multnomah county; May E., who married J. E. High, and lives on the farm with her parents; and James D., at his paternal home."1
" ... the father homesteaded three hundred and twenty acres of land in the vicinity of La Fayette. He subsequently sold this and bought in the southern part of the county, but later disposed of this place also and purchased three hundred and fifty acres of land a mile west of McMinnville. ... Here both the father and mother passed away, he at the age of seventy-nine years and she at eighty. Of the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Derby there were born five children: Elizabeth, the wife of J. M.
