BROTHER STOPS INTRUDER WITH FORGE HAMMER
Eugene Olds of Wyanet Escapes After Assault on Wife and Her Brother Wednesday Night.
QUARREL OVER PIG
Floyd Martin Puts Intruder to Route After Desperate Fight in Potato Patch.
Stunned by a blow on the head with a hammer as he broke into the house where his wife was living in Wyanet late Wednesday night, Eugene Olds, 25 year old son of Mr. and Mrs Frank Olds, shot twice
wide of his mark and failed in his attempt to kill his wife, Gertrude Martin Olds, and her brother, Floyd Martin. Mrs. Olds is about 25 years of age and her brother is 21 years old. The couple separated several weeks ago. Olds went in hiding after the attempted murder but was captured by Sheriff Spaulding and Deputy Sheriff Conkling yesterday afternoon.
Shortly after 11 o'clock Wednesday night the husband, who had been drinking most of the afternoon and evening, broke into the house where his wife and two of their three children have been living since they separated. The third child, a slx-year-old son, has been living with the father.
Used Shot Gun.
Olds carried a loaded double-barreled twelve-gauge shot gun in his hand when he entered the house. One charge was fired at Martin, passing close to his body under the left arm. The other charge was fired at Mrs. Olds as she ran to cover in a bedroom. The charge fired at the wife struck the door-jam behind which she was standing, passed through it and lodged in an ironing board.
The domestic troubles of the Olds family leading up to the attempted murders has been brewing for some time. Mrs Olds left her husband because of his drunkenness and cruelty towards her and their children. He has also been intimate with certain Wyanet women, the facts becoming known to Mrs. Olds. When she left him she took two of the children, a boy 3 years old and a girl 4 years old, with her. The other child, a hoy 6 years old, was kept by the father. Several times since the separation the father has threatened to take the two children away from their mother.
Pig Starts Trouble.
A pig, which the husband had given to Mrs. Olds, is said to have been the direct cause of the trouble leading up to the attempted murders. Both of the houses occupied by the Olds family are located in the south-western portion of the village only one block apart. When the couple separated the husband helped move the kitchen range and other furniture to the house occupied by the wife. He also gave her a pig. Recently he called at the house and took the p|g back to his own residence telling Mrs. Olds that he would take care of it for her and that when she got ready to sell it she could go there after it. His explanation for taking it was that he was better able to care for the animal than she.
Wednesday afternoon young Olds, his father, and Roy Wise, it is said, went to the eastern part of Bureau county, where Eugene got away with a lot of liquor, and took a goodly supply back to Wyanet with him about 5 o'clock.

WYANET MAYOR, SHOT FOUR TIMES, WILL RECOVER
Eugene Olds Commits Suicide After Attempt on Life of B. L. Hudson
Mayor B. L. Hudson of Wyanet, who has lain in a critical condition at Perry Memorial Hospital since he was shot four times with a 22 calibre automatic rifle in the hands of a drunken maniac at Wyanet Saturday night, is expected to recover, although his condition still remains exceedingly grave.
Mr. Hudson was shot by Eugene Olds, 39 year old Wyanet teamster, as he attempted to arrest Olds for an attempted assault upon the later's estranged wife. Olds later committed suicide as Sheriff Jack Applen was in the act of placing him under arrest.
. . .
Olds started on his rampage after he had imbibed too freely of hard liquor Saturday night. He made the assertion that he was going to “get his former wife. Arriving at the home, he was refused admittance, and so he obtained a hammer and proceeded to batter down the door.
Becoming alarmed, Mrs. Olds ran to the home of a neighbor, where she summoned Mayor Hudson asked Police Officer John Greene to put in a call for Sheriff Applen and then he and Stanley Perrin hurried to the scene of the disturbance. Upon their arrival there, they found that Olds had armed himself with a rifle and had taken refuge in a shed east of the house.
. . .
. . . and Olds was discovered hiding in the hay mow. As the sheriff climbed into the loft he heard two shots fired by Olds, and he called to the man to surrender and put up his hands. Olds raised one of his hands and the sheriff, upon reaching him, found that the man had been shot in the breast by a bullet from his own gun. He died on the way to the hospital.
Mr. Olds is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Olds of Wyanet. He is survived by the parents, his wife and four children. Alvin, Ronald, Reva and Victor.
. . .
An Inquest to determine the cause of Mr. Olds' death was conducted by Deputy Coroner John T. O'Donnell at Wyanet. A verdiet of suicide was returned.
Mr. Olds had frequently been in trouble due to excessive drinking. Several years ago he was arrested for threatened homocide and Stale’s Attorney Josef T. Skinner had him placed on a $50,000 peace bond. The bonds were so high that he could not furnish bail but the circuit court reduced the bond upon a habeas corpus proceeding.7
