Guy N Gillespie was born on 29 Aug 1879 at Michigan.2 He was the son of Henry H. Gillespie and Ida Olds.1 Guy N Gillespie died on 25 Dec 1894 at Tompkins, Jackson County, Michigan, at age 15.2,3 He was buried at Lincoln-Pomeroy Cemetery, Tompkins, Jackson County, Michigan.1
His obituary states:
"HORRIBLE ACCIDENT.
"A Boy Has His Head Blown Off by the Accidental Discharge of a Shotgun -- Insane with Grief.
"The township of Tompkins was greatly shocked yesterday morning by the tragic death of one of its best known youths. The terrible event cast a shaow over the Christmas festivities of the vicinity.
"Guy Gillespie, aged 15, son of Henry Gillespie, early in the morning borrowed an old-style muzzle-loading shotgun, with which he proposed going hunting. He took the piece, which was loaded, to his home to clean it before starting out. It was about 9 a. m. when he went into the front yard for the purpose of discharging the load. The cap snapped, but without waiting to see if the charge held fire, it is supposed, he attempted to blow down the barrel to see if the gun was really loaded. It is thought as soon as his mouth was place over the piece, the load, which had hung fire, was discharged. The entire top of the boy's head was blown off. He was carried into the house and a surgeon was summoned, but his presence was of no avail, for death had been instantaneous.
"Guy Gillespie was a fine young man, well known and loved by all of the villagers for his pleasant manners and invariably joyous disposition. In their awful bereavement the family of the lad has the most tender sympathy of the community in which they live.
"The family of the boy were beside themselves with grief over the terrible affair. The father was especially affected. This morning several of the neighbors came to the city for a coffin, etc.,and despite their objections, Mr. Gillespie insisted on making the journey, and accompanied by a neighbor, started for town. When about two miles from the city Gillespie became a raving maniac. His companion whipped up the horse in the efort to get to the city as soon as possible. They arrived with the animal covered with foam. Gillespie ran into Dan Gage's cigar store, where his struggles were awful to witness. Sheriff Peek, Patrolman Crowcombe and others held Gillespie, while Dr. Main administered a hypodermic injection of morphine, when the unfortunate man was taken to the residence of Dr. Campbell, on Cortland street, where Mr. Gillespie lay this afternoon, entirely out of his mind, but resting easily. He called repeatedly for his dead son, Guy. What disposition is to be made with the insane man could not positively be learned at 2 o'clock. If he regains his senses it was said to be possible he would be taken to his home in the country. Dr Main is in attendance."4
A second newspaper report adds only gruesome detail:
"He loaded the gun in the kitchen, bade his mother an affectionate good bye and went outside where, an instant later, the gun was discharged and blew the whole top of his head to pieces. Fragments of bone, flesh and brains were spattered over the side of the house clear to the roof."5
