In discussing the early history of Bridgewater and their first church, Mitchell says:
"Feb. 18, 1664, the settlement of the Rev. James Keith, their first ordained minister, is recorded, and the terms of it particularly expressed. He is there called "a student in divinity, having some competent time improved his gifts amongst them in the work of the ministry, and having also due approbation by the testimony of the Rev. Elders of other churches of Christ, to whom he was known." He was a Scotchman, educated at Aberdeen, and probably came to Boston about the year 1662, and was introduced to the church at Bridgewater, by Dr. Increase Mather, whom he always esteemed as his patron and best friend. In the second preface to the " Bridgewater's Monitor," the first having been written by Increase and Cotton Mather, it is said Bridgewater had not an ordained minister till 1663. This had reference to the old style, probably, when the year commenced on the 25th of March. The terms of his settlement were liberal ; a double house lot of twelve acres with a house built thereon, and a purchase right, so called, being a fifty-sixth part of the original grant; £40 annual salary, £20 to be paid at Boston in money, and the other half at home. In 1667 they gave him an additional grant of thirty cords of wood annually, "the cutters of the wood to have five groats, and the drawers seven groats a cord." In 1681 they raised it from £40 to £50, £20 to be paid at Boston in money, and £30 at home in corn
and provisions. In 1689 they agreed to allow him £10 in corn in lieu of his thirty cords of wood. He died July 23, 1719, ae. 76, of course was about 21 when he was ordained.

"The text he selected for his first sermon was from Jeremiah i. 6, "Behold I cannot speak; for I am a child." The Lord however indeed encouraged him, '' and put his words into his mouth," and he proved
a worthy man and a faithful shepherd over his infant and feeble flock. His advice and influence with the civil authorities of the colony were also considerable. In the case of the capture of Philip's wife and son, when the question as to what should be done with the son was in agitation, and the opinion of grave divines desired, Mr. Keith's opinion, stated in a letter to the Rev. Mr. Cotton, in favor of mercy, and differing from most others, had great weight, if indeed it was not decisive on the occasion. The boy's life was spared, and with his mother he was sent out of the country, and probably to the Bermudas. The letter follows, and is well worthy of a place here.
"October 30, 1676. I long to hear what becomes of Philip's wife and his son. I know there is some difficulty in that Psalm 137, 8, 9, though I think it may be considered, whether there be not some speciality and somewhat extraordinary in it. That law, Deut. 24. 16. compared with the commended example of Amazias, 2d Chron., 25. 4, doth sway much with me in the case under consideration. I hope God will direct those whom it doth concern to a good issue. Let us join our prayers at the throne of grace with all our might, that the Lord would so dispose of all public motions and affairs, that his Jerusalem in this wilderness may be the habitation of justice, and the mountain of holiness, that so it may be also a quiet habitation, a tabernacle that shall not be taken down." He preached the sermon at the dedication of the new meeting house in South Bridgewater in 1717, two years only before his death, which was printed in the " Bridgewater's Monitor," and which contains some pertinent and impressive remarks on the subject of intemperance even at that early period. " Besides other evils," said he, " which might be mentioned, I would refer particularly to that of intemperance, the excessive and prodigious expense upon strong drink, above all, that of rum; I say, the scandalous and horrible abuse of rum, which threatens ruin unto this land and to this place; a ruin to all our dearest interests, both civil and religious. If there be any such houses among you, as I fear there are, that vend that strong drink contrary to the law of God and the wholesome law of this province, let such of you as are vested with civil power and stand obliged unto the oath of God, see that such grievous profanation be suppressed, lest that iniquity, the abuse of rum, be our ruin."5
The nine children of Rev. James and Susanna (Edson) Keith are listed with full birth dates by Edson. This list is in conflict with various genealogies which show the marriage of Ephraim Howard and Mary Keith about 1689, but appears authentic because it gives full and internally consistent dates for the nine children.1
Among the references given in the bibliography for this section of the Edson Genealogy are several previous publications on the Edson Family, Mitchell's History of Bridgewater, "Bridgewater, Mass., VR", and "Keith Family". Both Mitchell and Latham discuss the family of Rev. James Keith and list his children, including the Mary who married Ephraim Howard. They do not provide birth dates for these children, but surely would have done so if they had been included in the Vital Records of Bridgewater or available to them in the other local and family records they examined in their Bridgewater research.6,3
Latham, however, provides further information on pages 2-3:
"A memoir of Royal Keith, with annals of the Keith family of Scotland, a pamphlet of 24 pages, was published in Boston 1873, by C. E. Keith, & Co., in which memoir on the 7th page is given an account of the birth of the children of Rev. James Keith, putting down the exact date of the birth of each of his nine children, naming them in the order in which they are named in Mitchell's History of Bridgewater [which was, significantly, all the sons followed by all the daughters -- DWO], as follows:
[Here, he gives the same list of names with the same birth dates as later reported in Edson]
"James Keith, born December 5, 1669;
Joseph Keith, " November 8, 1671;
Samuel Keith, " December 20, 1673;
Timothy Keith, " April 3, 1675;
John Keith, " October 4, 1676;
Josiah Keith, " December 25, 1678;
Margaret Keith, " November 2, 1682;
Mary Keith, " April 3, 1684;
Susanna Keith " March 10, 1687
"This account of the dates of the births of these children is believed to be wholly incorrect, without authority, and was altogether conjectural. Two of the three daughters, and four of the six sons of Minister Keith, lived and died in Bridgewater. These four sons have gravestones, giving the date of their deaths and ages, and one of them, said Joseph Keith, giving the exact date of his birth, as well as his death, as before stated. ["Joseph Keith being the only one of the nine children of Rev. James Keith, the exact date of whose birth is known. He was no doubt born February 14, 1675, as stated on his grave-stone, and died September 27, 1730." -- Latham, p. 2] The other three sons have gravestones reading as follows:
1. Samuel "died February 3, 1759 in the 82nd year of his age." He was buried in Scotland, part of the South Precinct of old Bridgewater. [Thus, b. ca. 1677 -- DWO]
2. Timothy "died November 8, 1767, aged 84." Buried in Campello, part of North Precinct, now Brockton. [Thus, b. ca. 1683 -- DWO]
3. John "died June 11, 1761 in the 73rd year of his age." Buried in the Old Yard, South Precinct, now Bridgewater. [Thus, b. ca. 1688 -- DWO]
"There is no record of the birth or death of the other five children of Rev. James Keith, who have no gravestones. Two of his daughters lived and died in Bridgewater, now West Bridgewater. James died in Mendon, Josiah died in Easton, and Margaret probably died in Rehoboth. Their birth and deaths are unknown except as before erroneously stated in that memoir, which is incorrect and unreliable, if gravestones tell the truth."
Latham ends up giving later birth dates for these sons than does Edson which might indicate that Mary, next to the end of the list, was born even later than the 1684 date given. However, the real result is that there is now more room to place Mary earlier in the birth order, as she must be if she became the wife of Ephraim Howard.
On page 240, Latham further lays to rest any difficulty to good genealogy that might be created by the earlier Keith pamphlet "We have never been able to find any record of the date of the birth of Rev. James Keith, nor the date of his marriage to Susanna, daughter of Dea. Samuel Edson, or of the date of the birth of his children, except Joseph. In the pamphlet referred to on the third page of this book, it is stated that they were married May 3, 1668, but that date was acknowledged by the author to be conjectural and with out authority, and we have no confidence in that date."

Mary Keith was born at Bridgewater, Massachusetts.2 She was the daughter of James Keith and Susanna Edson.2 Mary Keith married Ephraim Howard, son of John Howard and Martha Hayward, in 1688 or 1689.3 Mary Keith died in Feb 1760 at Bridgewater, Massachusetts,4 and was buried at South Street Cemetery, Bridgewater, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.5,6
Mary Edson Keith, daughter of Rev. James and Susanna (Edson) Keith, born 3 April 1684 [sic], married to Ephraim Howard, and died in 1760 is listed as the next to the last of their children, all with full dates for birth. Latham discusses these birth dates, which appear in an early Keith family monograph, and shows that they are incorrect conjectures. Both Edson and Mitchell list Mary as the next to last child, but the order was introduced by Mitchell when he listed first all the sons, then all the daughters.2,7,8
The birth and marriage dates for Mary cannot both be correct and apply to the same person. Since both fit within their respective time niches and seem not be estimates subject to much variation, the implication is that the two references do not apply to the same Mary. Ephraim Howard's wife could belong to an earlier generation but Rev. James Keith immigrated before his marriage and there are no other known members of his family with whom to place Mary unless she was his daughter, born much earlier than stated in the Keith monograph and used by Edson. For the present, I choose to leave her in this pedigree and seek contemporary evidence for her birth date.
