"One man has a claim to fame in Olney that is unique. William Higgins claims he knows for sure where the white squirrels originated from.
"'The origin of the white squirrels comes from groves on either side of my grandfather's (G. W. Ridgely) house in Sumner,' Higgins said, 'I am old enough to remember my grandfather and father caging the white squirrels and bringing them to Olney.'
"Higgins is 84 years-old and claims he was nine-years-old when the white squirrels were brought here.
"His father, Asa Higgins, and grandfather made the traps to trap the furry creatures in the early 1900's. The two then took them for display at Jap Bank's saloon in Olney which was located across the street from where the court house is.
''They displayed them in the saloon until the Humane Society made him turn them loose,' Higgins said.
"Higgins said he didn't know how they had become a breed of squirrels, however.

William Higgins was born on 15 Dec 1654.1 He was the son of Richard Higgins.1
Mrs. Katherine Higgins says: "This date of his birth is clearly impossible. Savage boldly amends the record to read "Dec. 15, 1655." This is unsupported. The best explanation is that the person who transcribed the returns of births from Eastham made a copyist's error, and by mistake gave to Richard Higgins a child William who belonged to some other parents. The William Higgins who was on Long Island about 1700 was probably of another family. This Genealogy accordingly will not count William among the family of Richard Higgins."2
