His obituary states: "The Late Edson B. Olds. Lancaster, Jan. 25
"MESSRS. ARMSTRONG AND GREEN: -- Our citizens were startled last night by the announcement of the sudden and unexpected death of Dr. Edson B. Olds, a merchant of this city, and well-known in the politics of the State and Nation for thirty years past.
"The Doctor had been complaining of rheumatism for a week, but was able to visit his store almost daily. I saw him at 10 o'clock on Saturday, and conversed with him a few minutes, while he was waiting upon some customers in his establishment.
"He was conversing with his daughter, in his room, about half past nine last evening, and presently said he would retire. He did so, but got up in a few minutes, saying he had a severe pain in his left side and shoulder. He dressed, and sat in a chair, and while his daughter was rubbing his arm (of which he then complained) with liniment, he suddenly gave a gasp, and life was extinct. The physicians have decided that he died of rheumatism of the heart. He was 66 years old last June. The Doctor lost his son, Rev. L. Olds, at Washington last summer. He was at his bedside for three weeks. That death afflicted him very much. He lost all his spirit; was depressed, gloomy and unhappy every hour. Nothing would arouse him from the settled melancholy which was praying upon him. I knew him very intimately, and endeavored to arouse him occasionally to cheerfulness, but all my efforts were unavailing. He spoke of death frequently, said his day of usefulness to himself, family and country had gone, and that he, too, soon would pass away.
"The Doctor was born in Massachusetts. There were four brothers of the old family, all noted for mental acquirements, and fine business capacity. Joseph Olds, deceased, was a Representative from Pickaway county, a good lawyer, and President of the Circleville Bank; Chauncey N. Olds, a Representative and Senator; Attorney General for a short period and a gentleman of culture and fine literary and legal attainments; Lyman Olds, manufacturer, resides in this city; Judge Olds, of the Columbus Circuit, is a son of the Doctor's. The Doctor will be buried on Wednesday.

Another obituary for Edson states:
"Death of Dr. Edson B. Olds
"By private intelligence from Lancaster, we learn, with feelings of profound regret the death of Dr. Edson B. Olds, at his residence in that city, on Sunday night, January 24th.
"Dr. Olds was born in Vermont, and emigrated to Ohio at an early age, and settled in Circleville, where he practiced his profession. Subsequently, he engaged in mercantile business. In 1841, he became a member of the Ohio Legislature, and first in the House of Representatives, and then in the State Senate, of which body he was Speaker, he served several terms, taking a leading and active part in the business of legislation. From 1849 to 1855 he was a member of Congress, representing the district of which Franklin county was a part. While a member of that body, as chairman of the committee of Post-offices and Post Roads, Dr. Olds, by his industry and tact, was enabled to settle the question of the right of the people of Wheeling, Va., to bridge the Ohio river -- stoutly contested by the citizens of Pittsburg -- by procuring the passage of a resolution, making the bridge a part of a post road.
"His many exalted qualities of head and heart made Dr. Olds many friends, and when to these was joined his talent as a public speaker, his friends looked forward with confidence to the time when still higher honors awaited him.
"A sketch of Dr. Olds' life, no matter how brief, would be imperfect without a notice of the foul wrong committed on his person which was the primary cause of his death. In 1862, just after the party of free speech had come into power and inaugurated the war, which President Lincoln might, almost with a word, have prevented, Dr. Olds, while sick at his home, had his house entered by men claiming authority from Secretary Stanton and Governor Tod, and without trial, without crime, and in violation of the clearest principles of constitutional right, was carried off a prisoner and immured, first at the Old Capitol Prison at Washington, and subsequently at Fort Lafayette, and was there kept in a loathsome dungeon, deprived of all the comforts of life. So vindictive were his captors, that, to prevent his reading anything that might possibly come to him, his spectacles were taken from him -- his eyesight was so defective that without glasses he could not read. Harsh and brutal treatment, then and there endured was the producing cause of his death. Immediately after Dr. Olds was released from his prison, a vacancy happened in the Legislature, from Fairfield county, and the Doctor was taken up and elected to fill the vacancy by an overwhelming majority.
"After his deliverance from prison, Dr. Olds sought in vain for redress. Congress removed the right to sue for false imprisonment, to the United States Courts, and there -- to the eternal shame of the American people, be it said, -- there was no redress.
"With broken health, Dr. Olds lingered until Sunday night last, when another of the victims of Radical power was summoned to that Higher Court, where justice will be meted out by the Judge of the quick and the dead.
"Gladly would we have omitted that portion of Dr. Olds' life, when he was a prisoner, without a crime, in an American Bastile, for it is a subject that we, in common with the right feeling, law abiding portion of the American people cannot but feel, as De Wilton said of the scoundrelly Marmion,
'Vengeance to God alone belongs,
But when I think of thy many wrongs,
My blood is liquid flame.'
"In monarchial England, such a outrage on a citizen, no matter if he were the meanest of his class, would have convulsed the country from center to circumference. Less outrages brought the head of Charles the First of England, and Louis the 16th of France, to the block, while in free America, the party which based its platform on free speech and freedom to the negro, committed this on the person of Dr. Olds, and similar ones on other citizens, and the courts, by partisan decisions, instead of being a protection, aided the minions of power to strike down the rights of the citizens. --- Statesman."11

Maggie McCracken, a genealogist and antique dealer, shared the following information with me as she was looking for a home for this rosewood dresser
"I bought an old rosewood dresser, and there was information in it that indicated it had been purchased by Edson B. Olds after his wife Anna Maria Carolus suffered a stroke preventing a planned move of the family to Minnesota. Here is some of the information [stuff in brackets I [McCracken] added]:
"In 1856 Edson B. Olds planned to move to Minnesota and disposed of much of his household possessions when his wife, Anna Mria Carolus suffered a stroke and the plan was given up. The family then moved to Lancaster where they settled in a house owned by George Smith (father of George Smith who later married Mary Olds--a case of love at first sight according to an account of the lady herself to her daughter Rose O. Smith). The following articles are mementos in the possession of Mary Clarke McIntyre, great-grand-daughter of Anna Maria Carolus. The rosewood dresser was purchase in Cincinnati [Cincinnati written in hand, typewritten New York crossed out] for the Lancaster home after the Minnesota trip was given up. The sewing table, which belonged to Anna Maria Carolus, was used in turn by her daughter Mary Olds Smith, her unmarried daughter Lucy olds, then her granddaughter Rose Olds Smith. [In handwriting between lines it continues:] It is now the beloved possession of her great-granddaughter Mary Clark McIntyre. [Back to typing] The sandalwood fan [arrow in handwriting with "in Lucy Old's picture-p-"], the mother-of-pearl card case, the white cup and saucer with the raised figures, the cranberry decanters and the large silver tablespoons were all Anna Maria Carolus' possessions (Also the candleabra in the possession of Rose Ellen Clark Nolte). The turn-top table was "always in the family for as long as she could remember" Rose O. Smith said. 20 [in handwriting again now:] is now owned by Mary C. McIntyre. (End of pages.)
These typewritten pages were found within a rosewood dresser, presumably the one referred to above, made by Mitchell and Hammelsberg furniture company of Cincinnati, Ohio."7

Edson Baldwin Olds was born in 1819 at Burlington, Vermont.1 He was the son of Gamaliel Smith Olds and Julia Whitney.1 Edson Baldwin Olds died on 24 Jan 1869 at Lancaster, Ohio.1
"OLDS, Edson B., statesman, was born in Burlington, Vt, in 1819, son of Gamaliel Smith Olds, clergyman and educator (1777-1848). With his parents he removed to the state of Georgia where his father was for several years professor of mathematics and natural philosophy in the University of Georgia, at Athens. Here he had the advantages of a thorough course at this celebrated school where he was duly graduated. He adopted the profession of medicine and in 1841 removed with his parents to Cincinnati, O., where he commenced practice as a physician and surgeon. He became popular, and soon gained a large acquaintance and influence. He was elected as a Democrat to represent his district in the thirty-first U. S. congress and was re-elected to the thirty-second and thirty-third congresses, where he served on important committees and was a prominent and pronounced defender of the institution of slavery as it then existed in the southern states, and in favor of an equal chance for its introduction in the new territories. The anti-slavery sentiment became so strong that he was not returned to the thirty-fourth congress. However, his local reputation as an able legislator secured for him a place in the Ohio state legislature, where he served for six years in either house, and was for one session president of the state senate. In 1862 he was accused, by the general government, of disloyalty, and arrested and imprisoned in Fort Lafayette, New York harbor. While so imprisoned his constituents renominated him for the Ohio legislature and he was elected. The charge of treason not being sustained, he was released and took his seat in the state legislature. After the close of the war Dr. Olds built a church and made the one condition in its management "that it should be free from the heresy of regarding slavery and rebellion as sins." He died at Lancaster, O., Jan. 24, 1869."1
With an Edson Baldwin Olds, b. 1802, son of Joseph Olds, and an Edson Baldwin Olds, b. 1819, son of Gamaliel Smith Olds, both dying on 24 Jan 1869, it is clear that their biographies must be disentangled. From at least 1840 onward the biography quoted here belongs to Edson B. Olds, born 1803. Perhaps the other one never existed or died young. The Olds Genealogy, by another Edson Baldwin Olds, does not show that Gamaliel Smith Olds had such a son, nor does any other record that I have found, except the article quoted.
Gamaliel Smith Olds was at the University of Georgia in 1825-6. If he had a son born in 1819, that son was far too young to take advantage of a university education at this time.

"One of the interesting events of the past week was the golden anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Edson M. Olds, which was celerated at their farm home in Star township on October seventeenth. One hundred twenty-five relatives and friends came to help them make merry this fiftieth milestone of their joint journey through life.
"Autumn being an ideal time for such an occasion, the home was very tastily decorated in autumn leaves, ferns and yellow chrysanthemums. The Rev. R. H. Dean performed the double ring ceremony. Little Luella Sloat, a granddaughter, carried the rings in a basket of asters and roses. Mrs. Roy Kline, another granddaughter, played the wedding march.
"The out of town guests were Mr. and Mrs. Henry Garris and Mrs. Pemelia Garris, of Munith; Mr. and Mrs. Claud Holcomb and Mrs. Ida Garris, of Jackson; Mrs. Roy Kline and three children, of Detroit; Mr. and Mrs. C. Carlzen, of Petoskey, and Mrs. Alma Wellman and son, of Bellaire.
"Mr. and Mrs. Olds were among the earliest residents of Star township, having moved there in the fall of 1880 when nearly all of northern Michigan was a dense wilderness. Their untiring efforts have done much to make Star township one of the finest farming communities in northern Michigan.
[followed by a 50th anniversary poem]"10

"Golden Wedding
