"He was named in the 1522 will of his father. Also he inherited lands from his Uncle Sir William Smyth."1 John Smith left a will on 16 Jun 1642 at Erwarton, Suffolk County, England.2. "In his will, proved 10 Oct 1542 he gave his Erwarton properties, 'Brownes Marlars & Sparhawkes," to his son William. If William were to die without heirs they would go to son Philip. This apparently happened, because Philip bequeathed them in in his 1587/8 will. These had been earlier bequeathed in his grandfather William Smyth's 1492 will. John's will names his wife Anne; mother Margaret Smyth, widow; and young children William, Philip, Margaret, Anne and Joan. The extant parish registers of Erwarton begin in the 1550s, thus little has been learned about John's wife and children>'
