Samuel Smith was born c 1602 at England.3 He was the son of John Smith and Mary Gardiner.1,2 Samuel Smith married Elizabeth Smith, daughter of Philip Smith, on 6 Oct 1624 at St. Margaret's Parish, Whatfield, Suffolk County, England.4 Samuel Smith died in 1680/81.5
The article by Prindle is based on Hartford Times inquiries and answers and so of a quality unknown to me.6 Anderson in The Great Migration says Myrtle S. Hyde has reviewed the microfilm of the parish records and made some corrections.7
"He was named in the wills of his grandmother Gardiner in 1615 and his father in 1618. Because he had immigrated to New England in 1634, he was not named with his brothers in the 1635 will of their aunt Elizabeth (Gardiner) Hayward."
This family embarked on the ship Elizabeth, with Mr. Wm. Andrews as Master, from Ipswich England, on the last of April 1634 and headed for New England. According the ship's list, their ages were: "Samuell Smithe", age 32; "Elizabeth, his wife", age 32; children Samuel, age 9. Elizabeth, age 7, Mary, age 4, and Philip, age 1.8
Samuel was a freeman of Watertown, Massachusetts on 3 Sep 1634. Nevertheless, when the Massachusetts General Court gave permission (6 May and 3 June 1635) for people to move out, he and his family were in the group that started Wethersfield in Connecticut. On 14 Nov 1637, he served as deputy to the Connecticut General Court. He continued in many positions of public service in Wethersfield and later in Hadley, Massachusetts to which he moved in 1661.9,10
