     "He was the inventor of 'Olds Horse Power'".1
     His obituary states:
DEATH OF BARNARD LORENZO OLDS.
Former St. Albanian Was Active in Philanthropies in California.
Many friends in St. Albans and Franklin county will be interested in the following from The Jacksonville (Ill.) Courier of November 18 as it relates to the death of Barnard L. Olds, a former St. Albanian, and probably practically the originator of the old horse power business which at one time was a well known feature of the foundry company's business.
"E. A. Olds, advertising manager for The Jacksonville Courier, has received word of the death of his uncle, which occurred in Pomona, Cal., Tuesday afternoon. The deceased visited in Jacksonville one year ago last May and while here met a number of the people of the city who will remember him. He was a foster father to Mr. Olds. of this city, who as an infant was adopted into the family of the uncle following the death of his own parents.
"Barnard Lorenzo Olds was a native of Vermont and was born in Franklin in that state. He was in his sixty-fifth year at the time of his death, which resulted from stomach and heart trouble. He received his preliminary education in the schools of his native state, graduating from the academy at St. Albans. Later he attended college at Oberlin, Ohio, where he received the degree of L. L. B.
"Mr. Olds was of a mechanical and inventive turn. Early in life he invented a horse power and threshing machine which he manufactured at St. Albans, Vt. In 1832 he sold the United States patent rights which he held and moved to Montreal, Canada, where he continued in the manufacturing business. His health failing a few years later he sold out his interests in Canada and moved to Edgar, Nebr. There he established a hardware store in company with a brother. Somewhat later he also founded a bank at Lawrence, Nebr. After the discouragements incident to two or three years of crop failures, Mr, Olds sold his holdings in Nebraska and moved to Denver, Colo[.] This was in 1888. He there became identified with real estate and mining business and for three years was also purchasing agent for the Colorado & Southern Railway Co. About eight years ago, on account of failing health, he went to Pomona, Cal., where he has since resided,
“The deceased is survived by his wife, Mrs. Katie (Woodworth) Olds; one son, Percy W. Olds, of Pomona, Cal; one daughter, Mrs. F. W. Carringer, of Denver, Colo; and two grandchildren. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. E. U. Sunderland, of Highgate, Vt., and one brother, Edwin W. Olds, of Pomona, Cal. E. A. Olds of Jacksonville, is one of a number of nephews and nieces who also survive.     ;
“B. L. Olds was prominent in the Masonic order and in the Odd Fellows. He early united with the Methodist Episcopal church and was always exceedingly active and interested in church work. He was a liberal supporter of the Methodist church in all the different lines of its activity. He also abounded in private charities and was philanthropic and liberal in the extreme. During his lifetime he was largely instrumental in the building of several new churches, among them being the St. James, Grant Avenue, and Christ Methodist Episcopal churches in Denver. He was superintendent of a Sunday-school in Pomona with a membership of over 800 and was also active in other branches of the local church work.
"To a rare degree the deceased through the years possessed the acquaintance and friendship of the /[/l/]eaders of the Methodist church. He was a warm friend and confidant of Bishop W. H. Warren, Bishop W. F. McDowell, Bishop Earl Cranston[,] Bishop Robert McIntyre, and Dr R. M. Barnes.
“The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at Pomona, Cal."3

A letter was written by Rev. Benjamin Olds to his wife about 11 months prior to his death. It was written near Bardstown, KY, in what is thought to have been Camp Merton. Other papers indicate the 65th Ohio Vol. Infantry had arrived there the 30th of Dec., 1861. Benjamin had gone there to visit his son, Major James Olds. The letter is as follows: "Burdstown, Kentucky, Jan. the 25 1862. Abigail Olds Dear wife. I thought as writing was fashionable I would write to you having little leasure. I am not very well today tho I am not much alarmed. I got vaxenated to day as the small pox is in the camp. The hospital is a little out of town where the small pox is and we are not much alarmed about it. There is two hospital buildings in town about five hundred on the sick list. From four to five out of that number die a day. Poor creatures suffer very much for want of care. The lady that tends to James as to dressing blisters and getting his vittles goes threw the hospital every day. She found one poor fellow who had a large blister that had been on four days and had never been dressed at all. James had a very bad night last night but is revived up today and upon the whole gains very slow. When we shall be able to start we cannot tell. We hope to start next Monday but it is extremely uncertain. Take as good care of Jane as you can and we will come as quick as we can. We have to clime forty two steps to get to our room and to go up and down a great many times a day. No more at present. Yours IC. (In Christ?] Benjamin Olds" The Jane mentioned was their daughter, aged thirty one years, unmarried. Perhaps she was an invalid of sorts as she died at age 38. Benjamin died at six o'clock AM on a Friday, of Typhoid Fever and influenza of the stomach, after one week's illness.10

     Benjamin Olds was a native of Pennsylvania, born in 1795. Abigail was born in Jefferson County, New York, in 1805. "Of their large family of eleven children, nine sons and two daughters, two are now living, Lester and Walter Olds. Benjamin Olds, though a farmer, having developed and improved 240 acres in Morrow County, was also a regularly ordained minister of the Methodist Church and successfully combined both vocations. In politics he was a whig and later a republican, and had a record as a soldier of the War of 1812. A more intensely patriotic family it would be difficult to find. Five of his sons were soldiers in the Civil War; James, who served as major of the Sixty-fifth Ohio Infantry in Gen. John Sherman's Brigade; Sanford, who was a member of the One Hundred and Twenty First Ohio Infantry and died as a result of wounds received in the first battle of Chickamauga; Lester, who was in Company D of the One Hundred and Twenty-first Regiment. Chauncey, who was in the Third Ohio Cavalry and at Munfordville, Kentucky was shot through the left lung and shoulder and died seven weeks later because of the wounds."11
Benjamin Olds appeared on the census of 30 Jul 1850 at Westfield Township, Morrow County, Ohio, as follows:
     Benjamin Olds, 55, farmer, b. Pa.
     Abigail ", 44, b. N. Y.

     Although E. B. Olds and Frederick Pierce have essentially the same information on the family of Joseph and Sally (Whitney) Olds, Pierce has "Benjamin Smith [Olds], b. May 5, 1807; m. Theresa Herron, and d. Nov. 12, 1862". Pierce seems to have missed the fact that there were two sons named Benjamin. I have no separate confirmation of the middle name.1,3
