Edward C. Olds was born on 26 Feb 1887 at Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana.1,2 He was the son of Charles Luther Olds and Eliza Jane McLachlan.1 Edward C. Olds died on 19 May 1963 at age 763 and was buried on 23 May 1963 at Lindenwood Cemetery, Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana.3
He "lives in New Haven, Conn; is in bond brokerage business in New York City."1
"Among New Haven's most progressive young men who through their energy, foresight and cooperation in well defined plans have contributed much to the city's growth and development, Edward C. Olds stands high. His interests are many and varied and rank him with the capitalists of this section. He was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, February 26, 1887, and is a son of Charles L. and Eliza (McLaughlin) Olds. The father, a native of New York, was taken to Fort Wayne by his parents when a little lad of five years and was there reared, educated and there he later married. He entered into the electrical manufacturing business, afterward selling out to the General Electric Company, and since then he has had charge of the local branch of the interests which constitute that great corporation. His wife was born in Fort Wayne and they still reside in that city.
"Edward C. Olds, the youngest of their six children, mastered the branches of learning taught in the public and high schols of Fort Wayne and pursued his more specifically literary course in the academic department of Princeton University, from which he was graduated with the class of 1909. He then turned his attention to the banking business in connection with N. W. Halsey & Company, private bankers of New York city, with whom he continued until 1914. In the previous year he became the representative of N. W. Halsey & Company at New Haven and in 1914 he decided to embark in business on his own account. Prior to that date he had become connected in an official capacity with a number of the leading enterprises of New Haven and had become a large stockholder of several business interests. It was this that necessitated his severing his connection with the Halsey Company to look after his own investments. He became president of the Connecticut Realty Company, controlling a large business in real estate operations, and since 1915 has been president of Colony Advertising Company. He is also president of the firm of H. D. Rollins & Company, of 61 Broad street, New York city, and he is connected with other enterprises and interests. He displays notably sound judgement in making his investments, his sagacity is keen and his efforts are attended with success. He readily discriminates between the essential and the nonessential and with notable prescience forsees the outcome of any undertaking.
"Mr. Olds is connected with many clubs and social organizations. He has membership in the Graduates, Country, Lawn and Princeton Clubs of New Haven and in the New York County Club. He is also a member of the Advertising Men's Association and of the Chamber of Commerce and is in hearty sympathy with the purposes of those organizations to further the upbuilding and promote the interests of New Haven. His cooperation can always be depended upon to further any project for the general good. Opportunity has ever been to him a call to action and indefatigable energy has led him into fields of successful achievement where many a man of less resolute spirit has not had the courage to venture. He is well qualified for leadership and his position is one of prominence. When the call to arms came in 1917, Mr. Olds placed his services at the disposal of the country, enlisted and is now serving with the American expeditionary forces in France."4
A later article shows a different view of his life:
"A 64-year-old man, who has just finished hitch-hiking through 14 States looking for work, is convinced that jobs for older persons are hard to find.
"He is Edward C. Olds, a veteran of both World Wars and a 1909 graduate of Princeton. He talked to hundreds of prospective employers, but he didn't find the job he was looking for.
"'I'm certain it's because I didn't hit the right places at the right times,' Mr. Olds said. 'There are jobs available for older people who are physically and mentally capable of holding them, but it's difficult to know where thery are.'
" Mr. Olds, who has a wide background of office and administration experience, started his tour in Houston, Tex. He saved a little money and left his job with a Texas oil company because he found it unsatisfactory and felt that he could do more in another job.
"He visited St. Louis, Kansas City, New Orleans, Nashville, Memphis and towns and cities between.
"Worked in Europe
"'Everywhere I went, the people I talked with agreed that something ought to be done to help the older folks,' he said. 'But there was no work right then for me.'
Travelling is nothing new to Mr Olds. He has crossed the Atlantic many times and has worked in London, Paris, Bucharest and other European cities.
"After he received his bachelor of arts degree from Princeton, he worked at various office jobs. When World War I began, he went to France and joined the French Army.
"After America's entry into the war, Mr. Olds returned and joined the fledgling Air Corps. He served as an intelligence officer at Kelley Field in Texas and Mitchell Field, N. Y.
"The war ended and Mr. Olds went traveling again. He was treasurer for the Hoover Commission to Romania. When that job was ended he came back to the United States and went into the real estate business
"Mr. Olds was 55 when the United States entered World War II. He applied to the Air Force, passed the physical exam and was enlisted as a private. He went through the nobn-commissioned grades in 110 days and was commissioned as a lieutenant.
"One of his tasks during World War II was leading a flight of B-17 bombers to England for use by the Royal Air Force.
"Left Army As Captain.
"When fighting stopped, Mr Olds became a Displaced Persons officer with that division in London. He learned about personnel problems there. When he left the Army, he held the rank of captain.
"A civilian again, Mr. Olds went to Texas, where he had held various oil company jobs during the last few years. Now he is traveling once more, and looking for work.
"He was in Washington today for that purpose and to talk to any one who will listen about a plan he has for finding jobs for older persons.
"'There should be a central clearing house of information about jobs available to these folks.' he said. 'It would not be an employment agency, but a center to distribute information about available work. Actual negotiations for the job would be carried out by the individuals involved.
"His trip and his own frustrations in job hunting have convinced him of the need for such a clearing house.
"In his present tour, Mr. Olds is traveling lightly, with a suitcase and a brief case. In Washington, he is staying at the Howard Hotel. If he can find support for his plan, he said he will open a job information clearing house himself."5

The house (built of logs and located on the west side of the road) stood about four rods northwest of Jay Johnson's present house. In the spring of 1861 he set out 200 apple trees of many different varieties and in 1867 he set out 800 more, making 26 acres of apple orchard in one block. Probably this was the largest apple orchard in the township at that time. This orchard has always had the best of care, and is now owned by Charles Johnson and is considered one of the best producing orchards in the township. Mr. Olds, his wife and daughter, Nettie, lived on this farm until 1868 when he sold the 160 in section 28 to Augustus N. Spaulding. . . . After selling his farm he removed to Hartford village and built the brick hotel known for a number of years as the Olds House (now the Hartford House).
