Uzal Wardell was born (probably) at Exeter, New Hampshire. The birth is apparently unrecorded. I changed the birthplace from Boston (as reported by some) to Exeter, New Hampshire, since the family had already left Boston after being banished for reasons of religious controversy.1 He was christened on 7 Apr 1639 at Exeter, New Hampshire.2 He was the son of William Wardell and Alice Pice. Uzal Wardell married (1) Mary Kinsman on 3 May 1664.3 Uzal Wardell married (2) Grace (?) in 1676.3 Uzal Wardell died on 25 Oct 1732 at Bristol, Massachusetts, at age 93.4
"Uzell Wardell (of William) was born 7 April 1639, probably at Exeter, N.H., as noted above, and he died in Bristol, Mass., 25 October 1732. He married on 3 May 1664 Mary (Kinsman) Rindge/Ring, daughter of Robert and Mary (Boreman) Kinsman of Ipswich, Mass., and widow of Daniel Rindge/Ring, Sr. . . . She died between June 1673 and 1676, for by early 1677 Uzell had married, second, Grace ______, who died in Bristol, Massachusetts as "Old Mrs. Grace" on 9 May 1741 ...3 " "The will of Uzal Wardwel of Bristol, yeoman, was dated 10 January 1728 and proved 7 December 1732. In it he named his wife, Grace; five sons, Joseph, Uzal, James, William, and Benjamin; and six daughters, Mary Barker, Grace Giddeons, Sarah Bosworth, Alec (Alice) Gladding, Abigail Green, and Hannah Crompton."5

William Wardell was baptized on 4 Jan 1606/7 at St. Wilford parish church, Alford, Lancashire, England. He was the son of John Wardale and Margaret (?). William Wardell married Alice Pice on 1 Sep 1636 at Boston, Massachusetts. William Wardell died in Apr 1670 at Boston, Massachusetts, at age 63.
"William Wardwell was baptized 4 January 1606/7, in the parish church of St. Wilfrid, Alford, Lincolnshire, England, the youngest son of John Wardale, and named for a twin who had died in 1596. ("The Parish Registers of Alford and Rigsby in the County of Lincoln, England", extracted by Arthur S. Wardwell of Brooklyn, N. Y., 1921, from Wardwell-Eardeley Collection, Toedteberg Room, Brooklyn Historical Society). The Wardales had lived in Alford for generations and John Wardale had been baptized there 13 June 1652, the son of Hugh Wardale (ibid.)"
"In the summer of 1633, along with several others of the village (including three members of the Hutchinson family), William left Alford to emigrate to the Bay Colony. It is believed that the group boarded the Griffin at London along with passengers Mr.Atherton Hough and Mr. Thomas Leverett, with their families, all of "old" Boston in Lincolshire. (Charles E. Banks, Planters of the Commonwealth, 1620-1640 [1930 reprint ed., Baltimore, 1961]). . . ."
"In September 1636, William, nearing 30, married Alice ---?---, most probably Alice Pyce. (She is thought to have been the sister of John Pyce/Pise, who married at Alford, 22 August 1639, Mary Wardale, William and Thomas's only sister.) "1
Religious controversy caused John Wheelwright, the Wardwell's minister, to be banished from the Bay Colony and in the Spring of 1638, the Wardwells moved to the Falls of Squamscott in New Hampshire and, with others, founded the town of Exeter. In January, 1639, the First Church of Boston dismissed Thomas and William Wardwell, John Wheelwright and others to "the church of Christ in the Falls".1

John Warfield was christened on 28 Nov 1613 at Dry Drayton, Cambridge, England.1 He was the son of Richard Warfield and Elizabeth Carter. John Warfield married Abigall Normington c 1639. "John Warfield, a young Watchmaker in Fleet Street, was married first to Abigall, a daughter of Alexander Normington, a 'Cutler,' and his wife, Elizabeth, who lived in the same street. No Marriage Allegation was made before the Bishop, the Vicar or the Faculties; they must have been married 'by banns.' The 1640 allegation at his second marriage gives his age as 'about 26' (he was in fact eight months past his twenty-sixth birthday), so when he married Abigall he would have been about 25. She was baptized at St. Dunstan's in the West on November 12, 1620. Her name was not "Abigail" though that spelling was also used at the time."2 John Warfield married Rachell Clarke, daughter of Robert Clarke and Rachell (?), on 2 Jul 1640 at Fleet Street, London, England. "Widowed only a few months, and left with an infant son, John Warfield took a second wife (and began what would become the Maryland line) when, on July 2, 1640, he and Rachel Clarke were married at St. Dunstan's 'by license from Mr. Hunts Register.' She was the second identified daughter of Robert Clarke and his wife, Rachell, who may have been the daughter of that name of Richard Wotton (or Wooton), a 'Scrivener' of Fleet Street (his house valued at 30 lbs.), and his wife Elizabeth Comins (?Cummings). If so, she became a mother at the age of sixteen."3 John Warfield was buried on 16 Nov 1665 at Fleet Street, London, England.4

Richard Warfield was born c 1676.1 He was the son of Richard Warfield and Elinor Browne. Richard Warfield married Ruth Cruchley, daughter of Thomas Cruchley and Margaret Baldwin, c 1698.2 Richard Warfield died on 23 Feb 1755 at Anne Arundel County, Maryland; Newman (perhaps following J. D. Warfield) quotes an issue of the Maryland Gazette from 1755, without giving the exact date:
"Sunday last, died of Pleursey, at his plantation about nine miles from town on the Patapsco Road, Mr. Richard Warfield in the 79th year of his age who formally [sic] was one of the Representatives in many Assemblies of the County, and for many years one of our Magistrates. A gentleman of an upright and unblemished character."
Barnes states that the issue was dated 27 Feb. 1755 which makes the date of death 23 Feb. 1755.3,4
In 1729 he gave a deposition regarding the history of 150 acres called "Crouchfield" which had been surveyed for William Crouch. Warfield gave his age as 53.1
"Richard Warfield entered the Lower House of the Legislature as a delegate from Anne Arundel County and served continuously until 1739. [Archives of Maryland, vols. 30, 34, 37, 39] He was on a commission to organize the public school system in Anne Arundel and for a number of years served on the vestry of St. Anne's Parish."1
Newman gives an abstract of Richard Warfield's will as follows:
"His last will and testament in which he was styled 'Gent.' was dated October 28, 1753, and probated in Anne Arundel County on March 12, 1755, with William Woodward, John Warfield, Jr. and Edward Baldwin as the witnesses. [Wills, Liber 29, folio 332].
To daughter Ruth Hall, wife of Joseph, 200 acres of 'Warfield's Contrivance' where Joseph Hall was then living.
To his niece, Elizabeth, the daughter of his brother Benjamin, then the widow of Henry Ridgely, he devised his share of 'Wincopin Neck' which he and his deceased brother patented.

Richard Warfield married Elinor Browne, daughter of John Browne. Richard Warfield was christened on 27 Aug 1646 at Fleet Street, London, England.1 He was the son of John Warfield and Rachell Clarke. Richard Warfield died in 1704 at Anne Arundel County, Maryland.2
He is on the ancestor roster for the Colonial Dames XVIIth Century. According to the listing, Richard Warfield married Elinor Browne, was a landowner in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, in 1669 and served in the military. He died in 1703.3
In the "Conclusions" of his detailed article, Foose says: "The evidence that Richard Warfield, the son of John Warfield of Fleet Street, and Richard Warfield, the Maryland immigrant of 1659 were the same person is circumstantial but persuasive:" and lists several arguments for this conclusion.4
J. D. Warfield mentions a "Warfield record" that Richard Warfield settled near Annapolis in 1639, but discounts this as being before the existence of such a settlement.5
He was transported to Maryland about 1659 by John Sisson according to the land office record quoted by Newman: "11 November 1662. Came John Sissons and demands Land of the Lord prpty for transporting unto this province himself and Wife ffrances Sisson, Nathaniel Brown in the year 1659 ... Richard Warfield ... Anno 1662 in all six hundred acres." [Liber 5, folio 484, Land Office, Maryland Hall of Records, Annapolis].
He came to Maryland as a "redemptioner", meaning he was to pay for his passage by a period of service after arrival. Newman quotes Sisson's will which shows the status of Richard Warfield: "Although John Sisson at the time of application for land-rights did not state that Richard Warfield was transported as a redemptioner, later conditions prove he actually came into the Province in that capacity. John Sisson, his benefactor, died shortly thereafter. His undated will was probated on March 16, 1663/4, by which he bequeathed his servant-boy, Richard Warfield, to Cornelius Howard." [Wills, Liber 1, folio 197]
"He had completed his service by 1669, when he and Edward Gardner were granted jointly a tract of land which they called "Gardner's Warfield". It was not until 1674/5 that he applied for land-rights.
"February 13, 1674/5. Came Richard Warfield of Ann Arundel County and proved his Right to fifty acres of land for Serving his time to Cornelius Howard 1660" "Warrant then Granted to the said Warfield for fifty acres of Land it being due to him for his time of service performed as aforesaid". [Liber 18, folio 165, Land Office]6
In 1675, Richard and Elinor Warfield were summoned as witnesses in the Chancery contest over the will of Nicholas Wyatt, an immediate neighbor. In 1689, Richard Warfield signed, as a military officer, the address to King William. He was known as Capt. Richard Warfield and his descendants are eligible for membership in the Society of Colonial Wars.
In 1696 Richard Warfield's name was returned as one of the vestrymen of St. Ann's Church, before the first building was completed. In his old age, he began the first westward movement of the early settlements to the unexplored frontier of Howard County.
Richard Warfield's will was probated7 on 11 Feb. 1703/4 and Newman gives the following abstract.
To son John "Warfield's Plains" and "Warfield's Forest"
To son Richard the plantation on which he was then living and 59 acres of "The Addition"; also the parental dwelling-plantation at the marriage or death of daughter Elinor.
To son Alexander "Brandy"
To son Benjamin 240 acres of "Warfield's Range" at the Patuxent
To daughter Rachel Yate 150 acres of "Warfield's Range", in event of her death without issue then to son Richard8; personalty to her and her children at 21 years; to Rachel's daughter Elinor silver spoons.
To daughter Elinor use of dwelling plantation while she remained unmarried, and part of "Warfield's Range", in case of her death without issue then to son Benjamin.
To sons John Warfield, Richard Warfield, Alexander Warfield and Benjamin Warfield and daughter Elinor Warfield residue of estate.
Executors -- sons John and Richard
Overseers -- sons Alexander and Benjamin.
In listing the children, I have followed Newman's ordering who uses the order in the will. He adds Mary who predeceased her father and is not named in the will (Vol. II, pp. 251-252).6
