On 20 Aug 1832, Jasper Olds, age 75 years, 4 months and 6 days, resident of the town of Andover, Allegany County, New York made application for a pension, under the act of 7 June 1832, based on his Revolutionary War service. He was born in Sheffield, Berkshire County, Massachusetts on 14 April 1757 and was living in Pownal, Bennington County, Vermont (then called New Hampshire grants) when he enlisted about 1 January 1776 at the age of 18 years, 8 months, and some days. He immediately marched, with his company and regiment, from Pownal to Ticonderoga, then on the ice of Lake Champlain by way of Crown Point to St. Johns then on the ice to Montreal, then on the ice of the River St. Lawrence by way of _____ River to a place then called Point Chambon and on land to the city of Quebec. At Quebec, they joined with troops under Benedict Arnold. He arrived there about the time General Arnold received his commission which was about the last of January or first of February the same year. They camped on the Plains of Abram and he almost daily saw General Arnold who had command of all the American troops there and was suffering from a leg wound he had received on the last of December in an attack on Quebec. He then served on the Island of Orleans until 5 May when orders were received from General Thomas to rejoin the others on Abram's Plains. They began there march but were informed that General Thomas had ordered a retreat and was already on his way ahead of them. They were likely to be captured by the British and Col. Seth Thomas told them "Boys you must every one take care of yourselves and get up with the advanced retreat the best way you can. This is all I have to order and God be with you -- flee for your life." They broke ranks and in singles and pairs took action they thought best to shun the British and reach the advanced retreat. "This applicant and his father Jonathan Olds who was also an enlisted soldier in the same company kept [to] the woods for three days and three nights until they arrived in sight of a Bridge on which was posted a sentinel so far off that we could not determine whether it was American or British", but it turned out to be an American and they rejoined the Americans and continued to retreat up the St. Lawrence River to Montreal. Here, he says, General Arnold took from the merchants "a large quantity of goods under such circumstances that many of the soldiers talked privately among themselves that it implicated his honor as a General and his character as an honest man." From Montreal, they continued their retreat to Crown Point and some went on to Ft. Ticonderoga. He did not get back to Pownal, where he received his discharge from Capt. Samuel Wright, until about 18 June.
In the late spring or early summer of 1777, he re-entered the service under Capt. Nathaniel Seely and again joined Col. Seth Warner. They went to Ft. Ticonderoga and were there when General St. Clair had to evacuate it. His third term of service was in August 1777 under Capt. Nathaniel Seely and Col. Moses Robinson. The fourth tour was in the spring of 1778 for 20 days under either Capt. Joseph Briggs or Capt. Thomas Robinson. The fifth tour was for one month in the fall of 1778 under Capt. Joseph Briggs and Col. Moses Robinson. The sixth tour was for one month in the Spring of 1779 under Capt. Thomas Ransom but he did not recollect the Colonel's name. The seventh term of service was of 20 days in June 1779 under Capt. Elisha Parker but he did not recall the Colonel's name. This statement gives a detailed record of seven times he was in service as a private from Vermont. Each time he had returned home to Pownal. He stated that he had also served additional times that he could not now recall details of but which would have added up to about two more months service. After the war he lived at Pownal, Vermont for three years, then moved to Clarendon, Rutland County, and lived a year, then to Mt. Holly in the same county, lived there for several years, then moved to East Bloomfield, Ontario County, New York, and lived there for some time, then to Andover, Allegany County, where he was now living. Among these papers is a letter from the town clerk certifying that he and Lydia Moon were married in November 1789 at Clarendon, Vermont. He signed his pension application "Jasper Oles".1

Jesse Olds was born on 31 May 1770 at Brookfield, Worcester County, Massachusetts.3 He was the son of Ezekiel Old and Elizabeth (?).2 Jesse Olds married Mercy Taft bt 1793 - 1794 at Uxbridge, Massachusetts.4 Jesse Olds died on 6 Sep 1838 at Macoupin County, Illinois, at age 68.4
"... he graduated from Harvard College, Class of 1794, having married while still at college; studied theology; was the first Congregational minister at Williamstown, Vt., but remained in the ministry only a year; he moved into Vermont from Montague, Mass., in 1798 and was the first white settler in Westfield, Vt; was a member of the Vermont Legislature 1802/4 and 1807 from Craftsbury, Vt; studied law and in 1812 was admitted to the Supreme Court at Chelsea, from Randolph, where in that year he had removed from Craftsbury; practiced law at Randolph until 1817, when he moved to Kentucky, accompanied by his brother, Phinehas Olds, who, however, remained there only a short time; gave up the practice of the law and became a professor of languages, which avocation he followed during most of his life; moved to Macoupin Co., Ill., about 1836."5
"Jesse Olds, the first settler, came from Mantague [sic], Mass., bringing with him his wife [A footnote here says he married a daughter of Seymour Taft, an innkeeper at Montague.] and two or three children. He seems to have possessed an aspiring, stirring disposition, and figured somewhat conspicuously in the early history [due to a printer error, this article is continued at this point from p. 355 to p. 359] of the town. He was educated, refined and polished in manners; and, but for his want of discretion, might have made a mark among his countrymen, of some importance. He had been a minister of the Congregational church, but never appears to have officiated in that capacity in Westfield, and but once while he resided here; that is, at the funeral of two young men in Potton, C. E., as mentioned in Sumner's history of the Missisquoi valley. The farm upon which he commenced is now called the Morse place, and formerly part of the farm owned by Hale Clark, on what is called the "West Hill;" there being no dwelling house upon it. Mr. Olds erected a frame barn previous to 1802, which was probably the first one in town, the outlines of which are still visible. It is thought that he had one daughter born here, which might have been the first birth in Westfield, though we cannot be positive. He set out an orchard near his house, a few trees of which still remain alive. As his house stood near the only road leading into the town from the south, it was frequently the temporary residence of the early settlers.
"This road came over the mountain from Craftsbury, and led on through Jay to Potton, C. E. where there were a few inhabitants.
"He went to the General Assembly at Westminster in 1803, being the first representative from Westfield. He was also town clerk from the organization of the town in 1802, till his removal, the first week of May, 1804, to Craftsbury. From Craftsbury he removed to the State of New York, where he died."6
"Jesse Olds came to Westfield about 1800, and about '09 or '10 moved to Craftsbury, and from Craftsbury to Kentucky in 1814, and afterward to the southern part of Illinois, where he and his wife died. Their children were Frances Eliza, Clarissa, Frederick Augustus. The son and one of the daughters are now living, 1863. The son resides in Rochester, Olmstead Co. Minnesota."7
Jesse Olds appeared on the census of 1830 at Eastern Division, Harrison County, Kentucky, as follows:
1m under 5, 1 m 15-20, 1 m 20-30, 1 m 60-70
2 f 10-15, 1 f 15-20, 1 f 50-60.8
