He graduated from Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, TN. His write-up in the yearbook says: "Bob is one of those guys who studies awfully hard and as a result he makes good grades and is a good student. Bob excels in all his classes. He didn't need but a half year's work to graduate, so for that reason he was not with us the first term. One of the outstanding things about Phillips is his society work. He has been a true Columbian and has meant much to that society during his stay at C. N. C. Bob is the Poet of the Senior Class. Not that he is any Bryant or Longfellow, but he is a good poet just the same. Many times we have read his poems in the Orange and Blue and enjoyed them. If Bob should ever fail in his life's work we are sure that he could drop back on poetry and make a living. But Bob isn't going to fail; he isn't that kind."
