He had enlisted on or about April 1861 in Lee County, Georgia, in Capt. John N. Stokes Company and served in the 11th Regiment of the State of Georgia. In the 2nd Battle of Manassas, Virginia, "on or about the 30th day of August, 1863, I was wounded by being shot through the right forearm from the effects of which wound I was disqualified from service at the time for about six months, and my arm was permanently injured by such wound that it has always been weak and its use greatly impaired and as I grow older the ill effets of said wound became more apparent in the stiffness and pain felt, so that I am very much unfitted for manual labor. Afterward on or about the day of 1863 at Knoxville, Tennessee, I was wounded in the left eye and face by a piece of bullet from the effects of which wound my eyesight gradually faded until about a year after the surrender the sight of my left eye was totally lost."
