Kingsley Olds1

M, (21 Jan 1794 - 1882)
Father*Daniel Olds1 (5 Apr 1759-16 Sep 1836)
Mother*Lois Stanley1 (17 Mar 1762-7 Sep 1854)
Last Edited12 Sep 2011
Kingsley Olds was born on 21 Jan 1794 at Peru, Berkshire County, Massachusetts.1,2 He was the son of Daniel Olds and Lois Stanley.1 Kingsley Olds married Phebe Ross on 5 May 1831 at Trumbull County, Ohio.3 Kingsley Olds died in 1882 at Berrien County, Michigan.1,4
He was a soldier of the War of 1812 and came to Berrien County, Michigan in 1833.1,5
"On the 16th of December, 1890, Mr. Copeland was united in marriage to Mrs. Emeline Warner, the widow of Condan Warner and a daughter of Kingsley Olds, who was one of the pioneer settlers of this part of Michigan. Mrs. Copeland was born in Niles, Michigan, April 17, 1841, and most of her life has been spent in Berrien county. She had four children by her first marriage: Ella, now living in Chicago; Lola; Mrs. Frances Mills, of Minnesota; and Bertha, who died at the age of three years.

"Abial C. Copeland is a Republican in his political views but without aspiration for office. He served, however, as highway commissioner for three years and is interested in all that pertains to public progress and improvement. Fraternally he is a Mason and he belongs to the Blue Lodge at Three Oaks. Whatever success he has achieved is due entirely to his own persistency of purpose and capable management. He has resided continuously in this county since 1868 with the exception of the brief period spent in Nebraska and is classed with the respected and intelligent farmers of his community. It will be interesting in this connection to note something of the family history of Mrs. Copeland. "Her father, Kingsley Olds, was born in Berkshire county, Massachusetts, January 21, 1794, and was the fifth son of Daniel Olds. He lived in the place of his nativity until eighteen years of age, when he made his way to the western country, settling first in Geauga county, Ohio, where he resided until after the outbreak of the war of 1812. He was then drafted for service and was mustered into the army, but only remained for about twenty days, after which he returned to his old home in Massachusetts. Soon his father gave him eighty acres of land, which was then an unbroken wilderness, the tract being situated in Cuyahoga county, Ohio. With characteristic energy he began to clear and improve it and had placed ten or twelve acres under cultivation when he traded this land to an older brother for an interest in a mill property situated on Grand river, Ohio. His attention was given to the operation of the mill for about six years, when through some mismanagement in business the brothers had to give up the property to the former owners. Mr. Olds then secured employment in a distillery in Trumbull county, Ohio, and while living there was elected justice of the peace for a term of four years. He was afterward re-elected to fill a vacancy and served for two years more. About this time he married Miss Phebe Ross, of Trumbull county, Ohio, and after working in the distillery and acting as justice of the peace for six years he removed to his father-inlaw's farm, which he operated on shares for three years. Soon after the expiration of that period his wife died and he broke up housekeeping, returning again to his father's farm, where he remained for about a year or two, doing such work as he could find. Later, however, he determined to make his way to Michigan and journeyed toward that state, ultimately reaching the present site of the city of Niles. There he began the manufacture of brick—the first in the place. There was not even a brick chimney in the town at the time. In the manufacture of brick he met with success and accumulated considerable property, judiciously placing his capital in real estate.

"While there Mr. Olds married a second time and after a few years, becoming tired of the business of manufacturing brick, he removed to the township of Benton when the whole district was almost an unbroken wilderness. He located on a piece of land on section 27, where he erected a log house and then began to clear away the heavy timber with which the land was well covered. After several years of hard labor, having got his land in a measure cleared up, he built him a new and comfortable frame house, in which he and his family resided for about eight years. He then had the misfortune of having his house and furniture nearly all destroyed by fire, but with renewed energy and strength he set to work to retrive his lost possessions and built another house on almost the site of the first structure. He continued to occupy it for several years, or until the infirmities of age came upon him and he turned over the care of the farm to his son, with whom he resided for several years, or until the time of his death, which occurred on the 26. of October, 1882, when he had reached the age of eighty-seven years, three months and seven days."6

Kingsley Olds1

M, (16 Oct 1793 - 16 Jun 1869)
Father*Timothy Olds1 (6 Mar 1763-before 24 Oct 1819)
Last Edited19 Nov 2015
Kingsley Olds was born on 16 Oct 1793 at Dalton, Berkshire County, Massachusetts.1,2 He was the son of Timothy Olds.1 Kingsley Olds married Margaret E. Widner, daughter of Michael Widner and Rebecca (?), on 20 Jun 1816 at Huron County, Ohio.3,4,5,6 Kingsley Olds died on 16 Jun 1869 at age 75.7,8 He was buried at Puckett Cemetery, near Warren, Illinois.9
The following long typescript entitled "Olds Family History" was shared with me by David L. McCrary in April 2011. It is one of many family history items he had found in his father-in-law's Aunt Lottie Olds' house.
"The Olds family came from England in 1667 and settled at Windsor, Conn., and moved on in later generations, into the Berkshires in Western Mass. James Olds, Kingsley's grandfather, fought in the Revolutionary War, as did, also, Kingsley's father, Timothy, and four of Timothy's brothers. ..."
"Kingsley Olds was born in Berkshire Co., Mass., on June 16, 1794 [1793 has been typed above this number], the 7th child in a family of 10 children. In the year 1798 his parents moved to Onondagua Co., New York, making the journey with two yoke of oxen and a big wagon. In 1813, when he was 20, they again moved, this time to the far west, settling in Huron Co., Ohio, near a small town called Bloomsville. This time their journey was made with a span of horses and a sled. On June 3010, 1816, Kingsley married Margaret E. Widner. She was of Pennsylvania-German extraction, the daughter of Michael and Rebecca Widner, and was an orphan. Her mother had died October 4, 1810 and her father April 15, 1813.
"Kingsley and Margaret Olds settled at Bloomsville, Ohio. The area was unsettled because of the unrest of the Indians. In the spring of 1817 the Indians became so troublesome that a group of 40 settlers, including men, women and children, at the call of Capt. Benjamin Funk, Comander of Huron Co., under Gen. Dodge, who was commander of the American forces of the North West, built a fortress or stockage [sic - stockade] for protection. They selected a spot and dug a trench around it. In the inner bank they set logs in double rows, one row blanking the openings in the other row. In this primitive mode, with no covering to protecct them from the biting winds of early spring, the chilling rains or blasting rays of the summer sun, this band of frontier settlers passed the summer of 1817. Here they were free of attacks and with plenty of provisions lived a happy life. (the nearest flouring mill was 60 miles away). Here was born the first child of Kingsley and Margaret Olds, Heman, on May 30, 1817. He lived 13 years dying Oct. 27, 1830.
"The family continued to live in Huron Co. where Kingsley engaged in "agricultural pursuits". Timothy and Mary (probably twins) were born and died in 1818. Lucnda was born March 22, 1821 (married Noah Burrows, of Illinois, and resided in Warren until moving to Calif., where she died July 8, 1901.) James S. Olds was born in Ohio Feb 22, 1823 (married Martha Franklin, daughter of John Franklin of Warren, and settled in Calif about 1849). William born April 25, 1826, died October 28, 1826. Elizabeth born Jan. 15, 1827 (Married Windsor Richards of Warren, moved to Lamoni, Iowa after Civil War, died there about 1910.[)] Lucy A. was born in Huron Co., Ohio also, Sept 24, 1829. (She married William Wood and moved to Calif. where he died. She died in Central America Jan 16, 1891.)
"In October 1827 Kingsley Olds, accompanied by a Mr. Putnam [sic], left home and frends in Ohio and started further West, the objective being the Winnebago Swamps in Illinois, then noted as good trapping grounds. The two men rarely met another human being, traveling through wild forests "on either hand". They continued on their journey, shooting game and setting their traps, crossing the Wabash River at Fayette, Indiana by fording and the Illinois River at Peoria by ferry, until they arrived at the Winnebago Swamps a few miles east of Dixon. They did not like their work so the remained only two weeks, took up their traps, & disposed of their furs. They passed through Dixon, crossing Rock River there on the ice and took a line of march for still further western loation. On this journey Mr. Putman [sic] would have frozen to death had it not been for the assistance of Mr. Olds. He pulled him from the wagon and applied his horse whip about his person with much energy untill he became angry and aroused, which warmed him up and saved his life, although parts of his body were very badly frozen. They continued their journey facing the cold, biting winds of the prairie and traveling through foot deep snow most of the way. They arrived at Gratiot Grove, Wisc. Jan. 27, 1828. The hunters put up at the house of a Mr. Thomas Wiley at Gratiot Grove, 15 miles west of what is now Warren, Illinois.
"In the spring of 1831 Kingsley and Margaret Olds, with their little one, leaving Kingsley's parents behind in Ohio, moved to Lafayette Co., Wisc. to the neighborhood of Gratiot Grove. Provisions at this time were scarce, especially flour and were held at famine prices. A Frenchman named Tomlishom, living near Galena, bought up all the flour in that section of the country and refused to sell for less that $22 a barrel, putting it out of the reach of these settlers who had come west to make homes, with but little more than an ox team and a few necessary tools. The people were very indignant at this act of the Frenchman, but there was no alternative, they had to pay the price or go without flour. The green corn soon ripening, the settlers set about providing the means for making their own flour. Large sheets of tin were bought, punched full of holes and the corn rubbed over the rough side, thus making a flour or paste that was not as palatable as it was acceptable. Upon this food Mr. Olds and his family subsisted during the corn season. The people thus getting along without the Frenchman's flour, it soured on his hands and left him the loser by speculation.
(Mr. Olds and A. C. Ransom planted the first farm.)
"About this time Mr. Olds bought 80 acres of land, built a house upon it, and started a farm; but is [sic] a few months his house and everything he had was destroyed by fire. He then sold his farm to Funk and Wiely.
"The Indians under blackhawk becoming quiet in Ohio, pushed westward and in 1832 made their appearance in the vicinity of Gratiot Grove, committing depredations, but the settlers went promptly to work and built a block-house or stockade into which the women and children were removed, Mr. Olds being a prominent man in the undertaking. The stockade was under the command of Captain Funk. No engagements were had with the Indians at this place. While they were living in the Fort Henrietta Olds, the ninth child of Kingsley and Margaret Olds was born on March 22, 1832. (She married three times. Her first husband was George Carpenter of Warren, whose grandchildren, John and Elmer Beals, were living in Warren in 1930. Her second husband was Charles Carpenter, no relation to George. In 1930, their son, David Adelbert Carpenter, was a farmer living about 2 1/2 [or 1/4] miles south of Warren. Her third marriage was to Henry Wilson, who lived about two miles south of Warren. By this marriage was born Jesse Wilson and a child who died in infancy. She died March 24 1921.)
"The people of Gratiot Grove had to contend with the usual frontier disadvantages. The nearest flour mill was located one half mile east of Galena, and was owned by a Mr. Parker. The nearest post office was at Galena, 13 miles distant, and one settler going to the city acted as mail carrier for the entire community.
In April 1834, Mr. Olds, in company with a Mr. Thomas Anderson, left Wisconsin for Ilinois, settling a short distance south of Warren, Illinois. Land not being in market, he settled as a squatter by building a cabin on land a few rods south of Mr. Theodore Pepoon's present (1868) residence. He made a farm which is now owned and resided upon the by the said Pepoon. The following year the firm of Olds and Anderson started another farm. In 1836 they built a double log house. Malvina Olds, the tenth child of Kinglsey and Margaret, was born near Warren of Sept. 15, 1836. (She married Briggs Sutherland of Warren and lived at Reedstown, Wisc., where both died, she on Feb 19, 1902. Soon after this Mr. Olds and Mr. Anderson dissolved their firm by mutual contract, Mr. Olds taking the farm upon which he resided up to the time of his death, and Mr. Anderson taking the Pepoon farm. Five yoke of oxen and one horse were used in making the above farm.
"Kingsley Elisha Olds, the eleventh child was born on the farm, about a mile south of Warren, on Nove. 1, 1839. (On August 1, 1865, he married Lydia Graham, daughter of Theodore Graham and Aletha Tucker, and lived south of Warren until 1868, when he moved onto a farm 4 miles northwest of Warren until 1901. He then moved into the village of Warren. -- see separate article about him.) Mr. Olds was County Commissioner during the years 1841-42.
"Up to 1847 Galena was the only market point, Mr. Olds getting all his grain ground there. It was also the nearest post office, 28 miles distant. Postage in those days was 25c on each letter. By 1840 Kingsley olds [Olds] owned 40 head of cattle. The county tax was only $1.50 on his entire lot of stock. About 1843-44 Millville, 4 miles distant, became the post office. In 1847 Tisdel became postmaster at what is now Warren, 1 1/2 miles distant. During the year 1847-48 Mr. Olds bought his land of the governmment upon its coming into market. In 1847 the Curtis Grist mill at Gratiot Wisc., was put in operation, 7 miles distant. Galena was the only market for grain and the nearest point to purchase family supplies.

[At this point, the typecsript begins page 3, with a partial repetition.]
"In 1840 Mr. Olds owned 40 head of cattle. The County tax upon his entire lot of stock was only $1.50. In three or four years Millville, 4 miles distant, became his Post Office. Two or three years later the Post Office was brought to Warren.
"Up to 1848 Mr. Olds enjoyed excellent health, but during the later part of the year he suffered from a very severe attach of typhoid fever, from which he never fully recovered, and to which he finally succumbed.
"Mr. Olds served as Justice of the Peace for a term of 1[8?- second digit in doubt but perhaps 8] years. He practically conformed to the laws and principles of honesty, integrity and sobriety, giving to every man has [his?] right, treating all men alike. During his second term of office as Justice of the Peace he would endeavor to reconcile disputes between neighbors and friends without going to the law, even tendering his fees and making any considerations within his power for a just and friendly reconciliation.
"In the summer of 1840 he assisted in organizing the first Sabbath School in this vicinity, being located in the grove now owned by Joseph Hicks. Mr. Olds superintended the building of the first school house, located near a spring, one-fourth of a mile south of L. F. Farnham's present residence.
"Mr. Olds was County Commissioner in 1841-42 amd Supervisor for the Township of Warren during 1861-62. In his political life he stood a straight forward Republican. In early life he voted with the Whig party, and since organization of the Republican party, he has been an honest worker in its ranks. On the breaking out of the Rebellion Mr. Olds's frontier patriotism did not desert him. When almost unable to take charge of his farm duties, he said to his only son this side of the Rocky Mountains, in his own peculiar style, "Go clean out the South. I'll do the work. He must be put down." His son went, and was a member of that glorious old Lead Mine Regiment. Passing through all the battles with his Regiment, manifesting his father's disposition of true bravery, he returned home to minister to his father's wants in his declining days.
"Kingsley Olds died June 16, 1869. He is described by a neighbor's child as follows: "Grandpa Olds, as he was called by the neighborhood, was the jolliest of men, and the children, for a mile around, were always anxious to visit at his home. You could hear 'Grandpa' laugh as far as (you could hear) Ki Van Dervort, and the biscuits and honey for lunch! Oh, my!" This child's tribute reveals the character of the man. When children love a man, they make no mistake and, their love is based on worth. They are more accurate in their analyis and impressions than adults. Intuitively, like a dog, a child knows his friends.
"Up to November last he bore up against his afflictions remarkably well, but since that time his afflictions became daily more severe, and he continued to fail during the eight months he was confined to his bed, until the angel of Death came and relieved him of his sufferings, and took him to that bright and happy home 'where the weary are at rest'." He was highly respected by all his neighbors, who mourned his death on June 16, 1869.11

Kingsley Olds was born c 1862 at California.1 He was the son of James S. Olds and Martha Franklin.1 Kingsley Olds died in Jul 1911.2
Kingsley Olds appeared on the census of 8 Jun 1880 at Bishop Creek Precinct, Inyo County, California, as follows:
Olds, Kingsley, 18, servant, working on farm, b. Cal., father b. Ohio, mother b. Wisc.
in the family of John M. Horton, 41, b. N. Y.
Kingsley is also listed with his father's family in this census.1
Kingsley Olds appeared on the census of 26 Apr 1910 at Gila County, Arizona Territory, as follows:
Olds, Kingsley, head, 46, single, b. Calif., father b. Ohio, mother b. Georgia, mining prospecter.3
I will temporarily include this version of the Kingsley Olds story, although I do not yet know where it was taken from.
"Two more dramatic murderous incidents occurred in the Globe area in 1910. The first was the murders of twelve-year-old Myrtle and fourteen-year-old Lou Goswick, sisters, on 23 June 1910. They were murdered at Horseshoe Bend on the Salt River. The circumstances for the murders were as follows:
Myrtle and Lou were the children of rancher Wesley Goswick, who lived four miles north of Globe. On the day of the murders, hired hand Kingsley Olds was told to take a wagon to Horseshoe Bend to pick up a gasoline engine that was located there. He was allowed to take the two girls, as they wanted to have a picnic lunch there. Olds had a shotgun with him to protect them. About 10 o'clock the girls went swimming. A cowboy, J. R. Haskell, just happened to pass by at the time and saw three people swimming in the river clad only in their underwear. The cowboy thought it was a family outing. But, later that night the girls had not yet returned home. Neither had Olds. Mr. Goswick got extremely worried and decided to go out to Horseshoe Bend himself. He arrived just as darkness was closing in. He found bloodstains everywhere. Kingsley Olds, in the meantime had gone to "Nigger Cabin," with a gunshot wound in the chin. He was found, and public sentiment quickly became inflamed against him. Although there was no indication on the girls' bodies that they had been choked or mishandled, many people were convinced that Olds was guilty. He, however, claimed that a man had tried to shoot him and the girls as they were in the river, and the girls had become frightened and drowned. There were also many witnesses who vouched for the character of Olds, saying that he had always been very proper with the girls and family, and that he could be trusted to tell the truth. He himself said, "I never hurt those little girls." Nevertheless, there was talk of mob violence, and it was difficult to maintain order in the town. A trial was quickly held, and the jury held that the girls' drowning was a direct result of Olds's conduct, although he may not have actually murdered them. He had, nevertheless, been responsible for them.
Late Sunday night, 2 July 1910, someone gained entrance to the "new courthouse" and could see Olds in his cell in the Sheriff's Building just east of the courthouse. (The same buildings stand there today.) Olds was shot and killed, and the murderer was never found. In the criminal records of Gila County the cases of Lou and Myrtle Goswick and Kingsley Old are still marked "unsolved." (NOTE: I have just been recently been informed by the granddaughter of Mr. Goswick that he, in fact, was the murderer of Olds.)4
His obituary is indexed in the Obituary Daily Times as: OLDS, Kingsley; ; Globe AZ; Tonawanda News (NY); 1911-7-5; ckalota.5
     His obituary states:
"Mysterious Shot Kills Prisoner in Arizona Jail
" Prospector Accused of Murdering Girls Killed by Bullet Fired from Court House
"(Associated Press—Nlght Report)
"GLOBE, Arlz., July 3— Kingsley Olds, the prospector accused of murdering Lulu and Myrtle Goswlck, the young daughters of his mining partner, who were found drowned in the Salt river thirty miles from here June 25, was instantly killed before daylight today as he lay in his cell in the county jail here by a shot fired from a window of the county court house thirty feet distant. The murderer escaped, leaving the rifle by the window from which the shot was fired.
" Confusion reigned for some time after the shot rang out, and when the oficers finally ascertained the source of the shot no trace of the assassin could be found. It was found that he had gained entrance to the building during the night with keys belonging to the janitor. Entering a Judge's chamber overlooking Olds’ cell window, he poked a hole in the window screen, and carefully resting the rifle on the window lodge, sent hla first shot between the bars into Olds’ right shoulder. It ranged downward through his lung and he died instantly.
"Olds was found June 24 by cowboys, with his jaw shot away, making his way to Globe from the Salt river. He was unable to talk, but wrote that while in bathing in the river with the little girls, who had accompanied him to Globe from their father’s ranch, he had been shot by a Mexican or Indian. He had fallen unconscious, and did not know what had become of the girls. Their bodies were found in the river the next day.
"The posse had found no trace of the person alleged by Olds to have shot him.
"Wesley Goswick, father of the girls, was disarmed the day following his daughters’ deaths, as he was coming to Globe with the avowed intention of killing Olds. The latter was then in the county hospital, but was that night removed to the jail for safety from possible mob violence. Later the charge of murder was entered against him.
"The coroner’s jury this afternoon could find no evidence as to who fired the fatal shot. A brother of the murdered man arrived tonight and will begin an investigation."6
The story of the arrest and murder of Kingsley Olds was reported in many newspapers. Here is one such article:
IS SHOT BY ASSASSIN
Kingsley Olds Charged with
Murder of Goswick Girls
Is Assassinated

"Kingsley Olds, charged with the murder of Lulu and Myrtle Goswick, aged 14 and 12 years, respectively, on June 23d, was shot and killed about 4:20 a m Monday, while he was lying asleep in a cell in the Gila county jail
A short time before the shot was fired, Mrs. Mona Frank, the nurse, had changed the dressing of the wounds which he had inflicted by shooting himself in the face, tearing away the lower jaw shortly after the time he was alleged to have driven the two girls to their death in the Salt River, near Horseshoe Bend.
Mrs Frank, who was sleeping on a cot in the corridor of the jail adjoining the cell occupied by Olds, was aroused by the shot, and ran into the cell. She found Olds lying on the floor of the cell in a pool of blood gasping for breath. Jailor Spoon also heard the shot and ran to the cell. Between them they lifted Olds to his cot and the nurse administered a hypodermic injection of strychnine. Dr L. E. Wightman was summoned by telephone by Jailor Spoon, but Olds died before the doctor arrived.
The fatal shot was fired by a man from an upper window in the library in the court house. He had raised the screen of the window and propped it up with a stick in order to get a clear view of the cell and its occupant.
The officers made a search of the court house and found that the man who did the killing had unlocked the door of the closet where Janitor Curnutt kept the keys to the rooms in the court house and took the key that unlocked the door of the room which he had entered. It is surmised that the assassin waited in the room for several hours before the opportunity came for him to make certain of a fatal shot.
After firing the shot the assassin walked down stairs and entered the cabinet room where he left the rifle a 30-40 with which he had committed the murder.
The bullet struck Olds at the top of the right shoulder and ranging downward emerged to the left of the lower breast.
A coroner's inquest was held Monday afternoon and after the evidence in the case, the jury rendered a verdict to the effect that Kingsley Olds came to his death by a gunshot wound inflicted by parties at that time unknown to the jury.
Revenge is the only motive which can be advanced for the killing of Olds and as Olds is the only man who could have told who or what lead to the death of Myrtle and Lulu Goswick it is almost certain now that this is one mysterious crime which will never be really solved.
The funeral of Olds took place at 2:00 o'clock Wednesday afternoon from the undertaking parlors of F. L. Jones & Son. Interment was made in Globe cemetery.2

His obituary states:                "Kingsley E. Olds
"Born in Warren, Died in Warren, Burried in Warren
"Well may it be said of the decedent, "He lives in the history of his country."
"Kingsley E. Olds, son of Kingsley and Margaret Olds, who were among the very first settlers of this section of country, was born at the family home, about one-half mile south of what is now the southern boundary of Warrren village, Nov. 1, 1839. He died at his home in the village of Warren Wednesday evening, July 31, 1907, aged 67 years and 9 months after an illness from gall stones extending over a period of nearly two years.
"Deceased lived the life of a farmer, attending school in winter, until the breaking out of the rebellion when he enlisted in the Union army, becoming a member of Co. B., 45th Ill., Vol. infantry. No braver man ever carried a musket or called a roll. He participated in all the service and all the battles of that noted regiment, being among those who re-enlisted after a service of three years. He was mustered out an orderly sargeant of his company, and had the respect of every officer and every private in the regiment who knew him.
"Returning to the family home he resumed his duties on the farm. In the same year he was married to Miss Lydia Graham and about that time purchased a farm in Gratiot township, Wis., about three miles northwest from Warren, where he lived until about 1891 when he removed to Warren, where he has since resided.
"Five children were born to him. One died in infancy. Those living are: Mrs Ed. Snyder, residing north of Warren; Mrs. Arthur Irvine, Primghar, Iowa, Mrs. James Irvine, Primghar, Iowa, and Miss Lottie of the home. The three daughters attended the funeral.
"The funeral occurred from the family home Friday, August 2, and was largely attended, Rev. Enos Holt officiating. It was under the auspices of Thos. E. Champion Post 315, G. A. R. Interment was made in Elmwood cemetery.
"After his death a post mortem was made by Drs. Buckman and Hilliard. They discovered one unusually large gall stone and numerous small ones.
"King" Olds was always and ever a good citizen, as well as a loving husband and a [word fragments missing] interested [in?] public affairs and kept himself well informed by reading and observation. His word was as good as his bond and his friendship was esteemed. In political belief he was a republican but he was charitable to the opinion of others. He will be missed not only in the family circle but in the large acquaintance of friends which he numbered.
"And thus passed away one more of the brave veterans who placed their lives in defense of a united country."4
