I’m sharing this information in the hope of encouraging further research, yielding additions, corrections and more accurate genealogy. Please help me improve this.
At this time I am seeking ancestral connections for George W. Bragg (1824-1898) of Spartanburg County, South Carolina.
The Bragg family has been in the Spartanburg District of South Carolina since it was formed in 1785. Peter N. Bragg7, who died in Lowndes County, Alabama, on 21 May 1841, was born in Fauquier County, VA., on 4 March 1763, and served in the Revolutionary War, moved to Spartanburg at the close of the war and lived there 46 years until he moved away in 18298. Peter Bragg was a witness to two Spartanburg deeds to John Bragg on 20 July 1786. In a 1793 deed, Daniel Bragg bought 200 acres on Ferguson's Creek. A 1796 deed mentions a grant from Gov. Moultrie to Daniel Bragg. On 11 March 1805, Daniel Bragg sold land on Ferguson's Creek and Elizabeth Bragg renounced dower. In 1812, a Daniel Bragg was of Laurens District. On 20 June 1816, "Elizabeth Bragg, Rhodo[sic] Bragg, Abigail W. Bragg, William Clayton, Catharine G. Bragg, and George B. Bragg", widow and heirs of Daniel Bragg, late of South Carolina, sold 149 acres to Simeon Lavender. These and other Bragg deeds are abstracted in Pruitt.9
A composite of internet sites has allowed me to construct (but not document) the following: Reverend Daniel Bragg Clayton (1817 - 1906) was the son of Mary Newport Bragg ( - 1826) and William Clayton (ca. 1790 - 1856). Mary Newport Bragg was a daughter of Daniel Newport Bragg and Elizabeth Brewton. Daniel Newport Bragg and Peter Newport Bragg, Sr., were sons of John Bragg (1733 - 1812) and Mary Newport. Reverend Daniel Bragg Clayton had a grandmother Mary Farrow Clayton who had a niece Rosannah Farrow Bragg. Rosannah Farrow was the wife of Zebulon Bragg and she died without children. Another report shows Thomas Miles Bragg, born 1793 in Spartanburg District and went to Alabama, who was a son of Daniel Bragg and Sally Elizabeth Miles. Jan Francis includes Mary Farrow who became the wife of James Clayton and had seven children who were beneficiaries in their uncle Samuel Farrow's will. She also shows (in Landon Miles' records) an Elizabeth Bragg who died 1 Nov 1798 who may also be the Elizabeth Miles who was born in 1778 and married Thomas Bragg.10 Thus, there are hints of a Daniel Bragg with wife Elizabeth Brewton and a Daniel Bragg with wife Elizabeth Miles.
Charles Bragg and Moore Bragg were witnesses to the 1793 will of Enoch Floyd. In his will of 1815, George Brewton mentions purchase at the estate sale of Daniel Bragg, dec'd, and mentions his own eldest daughter Elizabeth Bragg and third daughter Abigail Bragg who got the tract "whereon Peter Bragg now lives". Elizabeth Bragg's legacy was for life then to be divided among her children except Polley Clayton. John Bragg was a witness to this will. In 1816, Thomas M. Bragg was executor of Spencer Bobo. The 1816 will of David Brewton Senr. mentions his son George Brewton and 50 acres for which the title was made by Daniel Bragg. In his 1824 will, George Devine mentions wife Mary and children John, Nancy, Rhoda, Elizabeth and Frances, and grandchildren Mancils ____ and Chaney Bragg. The 1824 will of Samuel Farrow mentions niece Rosannah Bragg and also land where Zebulon Bragg did live. These Spartanburg County wills are abstracted in Holcomb.11 George Brewton, who served from 1805 until his death in 1815 as first pastor at Unity Baptist Church near Woodruff, and his wife had, among others a daughter Elizabeth who married John Bragg and a daughter Abigail.12 In 1825 the court ordered the sale of the land of Charles Divine for division among his six (?) legatees – Mary Divine, Meadows Harrelson, John Bragg, Moore Bragg and Daniel Bragg.13 In Spartanburg County Will Book D, the will of John Takewell, made 25 July 1828 and probated 27 Jan. 1845, mentions daughter Polly Bragg and son-in-law Daniel Bragg.
The Bible record of W. P. Bragg14 appears to support the following relationships:
Moore Bragg (6 May 1793 - ) m. Rhoda Divine (20 Feb. 1795 - ) on 31 March 1814 and had
Mary Bragg, b. 23 Feb. 1815
Eliza Bragg, b. 22 Oct. 1816
W. P. Bragg (24 June 1837 - 16 Dec. 1908) married (on 29 March 1860)15 Mavel C. (or E.?) Drummond
(5 Sept. 1830 - ), widow of George W. Robuck (he died 23 Nov. 1854). They had
Alma A. E. Bragg (30 March 1861 - 26 Sept 1874)
Jesse H. F. Bragg ( 16 Sept. 1865 - 6 March 1885). He was their only living child when he died.
W. P. Bragg (24 June 1837 - 16 Dec. 1908), a confederate veteran, is buried in Bethel Cemetery16 at Woodruff, SC, as are:
Jesse H. Bragg (16 Sept. 1863 - 6 March 1885)
Mable (5 Sept 1860 - 19 Aug 1923), wife of Pinckney Bragg
George W. Robuck, d. 23 Nov. 1854, with two children

wife of Curtis Bragg, married 13 May 1837, and mother of Jonas B. Bragg
Jonas Brewton Bragg, 23 March 1844 - 12 Sept 1923, confederate soldier
Moore Bragg, d. 7 March 1807, aged 37 y. 9 m. 3d.
Macy Bragg, d. 15 June 1817, age 76
Mary Bragg, d. 22 June 1807, age 37

An 1844 tax list of Spartanburg County, South Carolina,38 includes the following Braggs (and the tax amount for each): Curtis Bragg (.06); Z. D. Bragg (7.89); Peter Bragg (.63); James Bragg (3.98); Danl Bragg (.12)
In 1850, when newly married George W. Bragg was living in Greenville County, the Bragg famiiles in Spartanburg County were headed by:39
A Sally Bragg, born in S. C., married, age 61, died in June [1859 or 1860] (thus matching Sarah who was wife of Peter) of palsy which she had had for 150 days.40
Remember that the goal of all this is to identify and connect the antecedents of George W. Bragg (1824 - 1898). He first appears by name in the 1850 census of Chicks Springs Township in Greenville County, South Carolina, having just married Mary Ann Childress. It is reasonable to search for their antecedents nearby but in 1850 there were no other Braggs in Greenville County. However, Chicks Springs (at Greer) borders both Reidville and Beech Springs Townships in Spartanburg County. As we move backward in time from the 1850 census, the first event we expect to encounter is the marriage of George and Mary. Since they were illiterate, they would not be expected to have made any record of this event. Furthermore, the state of South Carolina did not yet record marriages. A church record might exist, although they seem to have been associated with the Baptist Church which is not known for extensive marriage records. Some ministers kept their own records and such a record may yet surface [perhaps especially by Rev. Warren Drummond]. Another (relatively good) source would be the newspapers. Many of those have been abstracted and provide no record. Perhaps a private record exists from one of George's children or siblings, but apparently descendant Ibera Oliver never found it or she would have shared it. Land records are often a good resource for family connections but the census records for 1850 - 1880 never indicate George owned real estate and no record has been found. Likewise, no Spartanburg County estate record is known to have mentioned him.
George would not have appeared by name in the 1830 and 1840 census records so the only attributes by which he can be located are age and gender. Assuming he may have been enumerated in a Bragg household in the region, I have produced the above listings from the 1830 and 1840 census records of Spartanburg County. This (perhaps futile) exercise suggests the names of Curtis, Daniel, David, Sarah, Moore, and Zebulon D. If he was not in a Bragg household, perhaps his father had died and a helpful estate record can be found. Not yet!
I have no definite evidence for a second wife. However, George was reported as a widower in 1880 and "Polly Ann Bragg" had a pension by 1902, Also the 1910 census does report that Mary A. had only one child and that one was deceased. Some of this could be attributed to unsurprising inconsistencies in the census listings.
George W. Bragg appeared on the census of 9 Dec 1850 at Greenville County, South Carolina, as follows:
George Brag[g], 25, male laborer, b. SC, can not read or write, married within the year, no real estate
Mary , 23, b. SC.41
George W. Bragg appeared on the census of 19 Sep 1860 at P. O. Sparta, Spartanburg County, South Carolina, as follows:
George Bragg, 31, laborer, b. SC, can not read & write, no real property
Mary , 30, b. SC, can not read & write
Warren , 9, b. SC.23
A G. W. Bragg served as a private in Company D of the 7th Regiment SC Reserves (90 days) and also in Company E of the 5th Regiment of South Carolina State Troops.42 In Company D he had enlisted 20 Nov 1862 at Columbia, South Carolina, for 90 days as a Private under Capt. Gresham (citing NARA 267 roll 0223) and was on the roster from 20 Nov 1862 - 31 Dec 1862. In Company E he had enlisted on 1 Aug 186_ in Spartanburg with Capt. O. H. Moss and was on the company roster from 11 Sep 1863 to 6 Feb 1864. (Citing NARA M267, roll 0199).43
George W. Bragg appeared on the census of 22 Sep 1870 at Chick Springs Township, Greenville County, South Carolina, as follows:
Bragg, George W., 50, farmer, can not write, no property
, Mary A., 43, keeping house, can not write
, Warren D., 16, b. SC, can not read or write
, Elizabeth A., 9, b. SC
, Elmina J., 6, b. SC
, James C., 3, b. SC.44
George W. Bragg appeared on the census of 23 Jun 1880 at Reidville Township, Spartanburg County, South Carolina, as follows:
763/763 George Bragg, widower, farmer, age 50, with two daughters, Lizzie, age 20, and Jane, age 16.45
In 1898, G. W. Bragg of Duncan's Post Office, Beech Township, Spartanburg County was listed as having a class C2 South Carolina pension for his service in the Civil War. In 1902, at age 63, and in 1915, Polly Ann Bragg of Greer, had a pension for the service of a soldier in Company C of the 5th Regiment.46

Curtis, p. 82, 1 m < 5, 1m 5-10, 1m 15-20, 1 m. 30-40
A distribution from Curtis Bragg's estate, made 2 Nov 1846, shows payments made to the widow, Catherine, of $148.98 and four children -- David W Bragg, Teletha T. Bragg, Wm. J. M. Bragg, and Jonas B. Bragg -- $74.49 each. One or more of the payments to these four heirs was made 6 Apr 1847 so must have been written in later.20 On 29 Feb 1848, Catherine petitioned to be guardian of W. J. M. Bragg, age 4, and Jonas B. Bragg, age 4. On 6 March 1848, David W. Bragg and Tabitha(?) T. Bragg, both over age 14, signed a petition showing that their father Curtis Bragg had died and asking that John Pearson be their guardian for their portion of the state. In 1853 or later, when John Pearson made his final report, he showed that Taletha was dead and her portion had been transferrd to David, the only whole brother or sister surviving Taletha. William was dead in January 1851 and Catherine and Jonas were afterwards the only two heirs in Catherine's reports.21,22 Catherine was age 51 in the 1860 census. In the 1880 census, she was age 73, mother of Jonas Bragg, and said her parents were born in Ireland.
Danl, p. 112, 1m 10-15, 1m. 15-20, 1m 40-50
He was age 50 in the 1850 census, age 55 in 1860. Spartanburg County Deed Book T, p. 335-336 (in 1816), shows Daniel Bragg left widow Elizabeth, and heirs Rhoda M. Bragg, Abigail W. Bragg, William Clayton, Catharine G. Bragg, and George B. Bragg. This was, of course, an earlier Daniel Bragg; also this is not "our" George W. Bragg.
David, p. 116, 1m 15-20, 1 m 40-50
James, p. 85, 2 m< 5, 1 m 5-10, 1 m 40-50.
A James and Nancy Bragg are mentioned in the records of Unity Baptist Church, about 1832 - 1841. In 1841 he was excluded and she was dismissed by letter.
John, p. 82, 1 m<5, 1m 5-10, 1m 10-15, 1 m 15-20, 1m 40-50
J. Bragg who was age 56 in the 1850 census might be either of the two men above.
Moore, p. 84, 3 m<5, 2 m 15-20, 1 m. 40-50,
Moore Bragg was age 67 and Rody Bragg was age 65 in the 1860 census.23 They also both appear in Woodruff Township in the 1870 census.24 Rhoda Bragg was a widow at age 85 in 1880 census.25 An earlier Moore Bragg had died in 1807. According to the 1880 mortality schedule of Spartanburg County, Moore Bragg was 85 when he died of Dropsy in August [of 1879] in Woodruff. He was born in S. C. as were his parents. Dr. W. W. Drummond was the attending physician.26

Peter and his wife Sarah Bragg were dismissed from Unity Baptist Church in April 1820, joined Unity Baptist Church by letter in 1823, were dismissed in Sept. 1826. Although I did not find Peter anywhere in the population schedules for South Carolina in 1850, he is listed on the slave schedule for Spartanburg County.27 A Peter Bragg joined the Philadelphia Baptist Church by letter in July, 1850, and was excommunicated in December 1859. A Sarah Bragg listed with him died in June 185928. Peter Bragg & wife Sarah [? -- not dead?] were age 63 in the 1860 census.23 Peter Bragg's will made, 24 Apr. 1869 and probated 6 Sept. 1869 names wife Lavina, son Cager, dau. Melissa, and "my youngest children". His estate papers say he died on or about 20 Aug. 1869 and name his heirs as: (1) the children of Wiley29 Bragg (Sarah Ann Wyatt, Thomas Bragg, Robert Bragg, and Mary Bragg); (2) Polly Meadows; (3) the children of Patsy Pruitt (John Pruitt, William Pruitt, Almarine Pruitt, Louella Pruitt); (4) Elizabeth Bragg; (5) Micajah Bragg; (6) Melissa Bragg and (7) “your petitioner” Lavina Bragg.30,31 Peter Bragg died near Walnut Grove on 19 Aug. [1869], aged 78 y, 5m., a member of Philadelphia Church for 57 years.32 In 1880, widow Luvinia Bragg, age 50, was living in Fairforest with two children, McCaga and Melissa.25 In 1870, the census shows Leona Bragg, age 40, with these two children.24
Sarah, p. 82, age 40 - 50, 1 m. 20-30
Zebulon, p. 91, 1m 15-20, 1 m. 40-50
Deed Book R, pp. 106-107 (in 1818), proves that Zebulon Bragg married Rosannah. This is a deed from Thomas M. Bragg and Zebulon D. Bragg to Toliver Scott in which Rosannah Bragg, wife of Zebulon, renounced dower on 12 Aug 1818. Deed book R, pp. 150-151 (in 1807), shows them to be heirs of Zebulon Bragg, who had bought land in 1794 from Thomas Miles. In an 1809 deed (Deed Book R, pp. 151-152), Thomas Miles sold land to his son Landon Miles and Zebulon Bragg was a neighbor.33 Clearly the older Zebulon was not alive for the 1840 census. The 1850 census shows that it was Zebulon D. Bragg who m. Rosannah.
Charles Bragg's estate was administered in Spartanburg County, and James Bragg was administrator.34

In 1850, when newly married George W. Bragg was living in Greenville County, the Bragg famiiles in Spartanburg County were headed by:39
C. Bragg, age 45, with son B., age 7 and James, Catherine, Mary and Eliza Glenn
(surely Catherine, widow of Curtis)
Danl. Bragg, age 50, no wife, but Willis, 9, and Posey, 21

Z. D. Bragg, age 54, and Rosanna Bragg, age 50

She also mentioned that her computer would not print out place of burial but that she had recorded that for a good many of the people. However, some of the family group sheets do show place of burial. Reporting dates from his Bible, she gives the birth date as 23 April 1877. She has also added the birth place.
